You want the best RPGs ever made?  Here's a list of some great ones.  Disagreement is futile.  My judgement is supreme.

NES- Dragon Warrior, Dragon Warrior 3  (Legend of Zelda is adventure, not RPG, mind you.)

SNES- Final Fantasy 2(4j), Final Fantasy 3(6j), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana

Genesis- Phantasy Star 4, Shining Force, Shining Force 2

Sega CD- Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Shining Force CD

Sega Saturn: Dragon Force, Shining Force 3

Playstation: Vagrant Story, Suikoden, Suikoden 2, Brigandine, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean 2

Playstation 2: Disgaea, Suikoden 3, Suikoden 5, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

Some have been omitted for brevity.  If it is not on this list, that does not necessarily mean it is excluded from being awesome, that just means I didn't bother to list it.  If it is on this list, it is awesome.  So speaketh I.

I'd have to say pre-cu SWG. was the best MMORPG ever, It really was a game you'd log into just to roleplay. But alas SOE says roleplaying is not "iconic" or "starwary

Tin Foil hats dont work.. its all a conspiracy

See, what I loved about that is...Final Fantasy 7 was not in the playstation list.
The only reason Final Fantasy 7 was popular because it was some peoples FIRST rpg, we can all see that our first rpg is our favorite (in some cases) my favorite rpg is Dragon Warrior 1 because it was my first...I still enjoy playing it.

Your comment about FF7, I don't think that is true at all. I played final fantasy 8 and 10 long before I ever played 7, and it sure as hell wasn't my first RPG. Actually, I never played ff7 untill the ps2 came out and I had done finished ff7. I thought it would suck because of graphics (because it's old) and I didn't play it for a long time. But then, final fantasy 7 advent children was announced, so I decided to beat 7 just so I could understand the movie, guess what? I was hooked, I loved that game and after beating it I was kind of sad it had to end, even with its out of date graphics. If I can love it now, years after its release, then I can only imagine how people enjoyed it back then. It was the first 3d final fantasy, and had an amazing storyline. I think it is one of the most legendary RPGs of all time, even NOW.

Also, for Nes I think the first FF should be added to the greatest list. It was probably the most innovative game of its time, and started a franchise that would shine years and years to come. For the super nes I would say Secret of mana, I think Square just kinna dominates this catagory. (note all the dragon warriors that are being mentioned, Im including enix on this statement)

Final Fantasy 7 is not a bad game.  It's a moderately fun game, even.

However, anyone who has played Final Fantasy 6 (Final Fantasy 3 in US) knows that the first disc of FF7 is ever so close in story to FF6 up until the Floating Continent.

While I think the projected remake with better graphics and camera angles will help improve the mood of the storytelling, it just wasn't as epic as a lot of people make it out to be.  For the cast of characters they had, there was a lot more opportunity to develop those characters than was taken.  Lines and opportunities were wasted, and they stretch out any background as long as they can.

Final Fantasy 7 wanted to be epic, and because of that, it just grates on my nerves.  It's a good game, but it tries too hard to be too many things, and stretches just thin enough that flaws peek through.  Better to be a modest game that only tries at one or two things, but can be described as nothing short of absolute success.

I'm not going to tear into FF7 fans for liking the game, no.  I've found myself very fond of good games with a few major flaws.  Star Ocean 3 for example, which has AI that you have to kickstart, as well as a storyline that skipped a bit too far ahead.  No, it's that FF7 simply tries too hard, and that's what hurts it most.

We all have our own opinions on games, so I'm not going to deprive you of that, or tell you that your opinion is wrong. I myself never saw this "trying to be epic" quality that you did. I thought the storyline was amazing, and I could realy relate with the main character midway into the game. I mean, Cloud is just a regular guy, like you or me, he wasnt a super strong guy. In fact, he was a weak shinra lacky who failed!! But by chance, all this shit happens to him...and its not like some other super hero that wants to use his powers to save the world, he just wants to live...For something to be epic, wouldnt the hero have to be...say...heroic? Cloud is hardly the heroic figure...It's one of the things I like about the game. Hes not a goody two shoes fuck, thats why my two favorite ff heroes are squall and cloud, though squall kind of is an emo in disguise...hes still cool.

See, the reason I wrote the post I did was because she was STATING, as a fact, that the only reason that FF7 sold well was because it was peoples first RPG, and I think that is kind of an ignorant statement. Because, you see; I dont realy think 9.70 MILLION copies of a game were all sold to people playing their FIRST RPG!!! Actually, since those copies were probably shared amongst friends, the amount of people is even more. To assume that each and every one of those people had never played an RPG before, is not only uninformed and ignorant, but also quite asonine. I don't know why people are always hating on FF7, is it because they don't like THEIR OWN favorite rpg to be outshined by a game that obviously sold better? I tell you, the game is obviously as good as people say, otherwise it wouldn't have done so well.

  • If I had to pick only a couple, it would be:

The Good ole' days: Chrono Trigger

    The Modern Era: Morrowind

I admit that when I first started playing Chrono Trigger ages ago, a friend lent it to me and I didn't think it was all that fantastic. The combat was good, but I found the first few chapters a little bleh, but once that time traveling started in earnest, damn was that a fun game. I still love the music for the Kingdom of Zeal.

Lunar 2 Eternal Blue: Complete. Only serious that made me teary eyed at the end, with its anime style, and for the time very good VA. If you wanna try a game where you get so attached to the charatcers they affect your life, try Lunar 2.
