Please suggest "the perfect game"

JaelJael Member Posts: 12

I've been searching for the perfect game for me for a very long time. The kind of game that makes me want to run home from work so that I can play again. I still haven't found it, so I thought I'd ask to see if anyone here who is familiar with a lot of games could suggest one or two to me. They don't have to be free.

- I don't care for most of the fantasy style games, I just can't get into the "magic" part, and picking up random objects that I can't even identify. Unfortunately for me, most mmorpg's seem to be just that. I have Guild Wars, and WoW, but they weren't really my thing.

- I spent quite some time in The Sims Online and There back in the day,
but I'm not really a very social person. While I really liked the
world/economy aspect, the chatting always bothered me. I'm looking a bit more for "play".

- I also played City of Heroes/Villains for a while, but it's too repetitive to me.

- Played A Tale in the  Desert II for one day. Really liked the concept, but it seemed like there was hardly anyone on. Plus the graphics weren't very appealing.

----

- I don't mind killing "things", but am definitely more into PvE than PvP.

- I am totally into exploring worlds, quests, scavenger hunts, etc.

- I like groups if they're into the game, not "real-life" chat.

- Economies, crafting, building, houses, being able to do my own thing, sounds very appealing.

----

- I'm looking for a game that has a big world to explore (and makes this one of it's main features), that lets me decide what I want to do and who I want to be, that doesn't require me to kill 100 monsters to pick up loot and then makes me figure out what to do with it, and that has a good community (I like connecting with people, have a best buddy to do missions with, but I don't want to chat about what I do in the so-called "real life", so I guess I'm looking for more role-play oriented communities).

This is probably a lot, but maybe to someone reading this a certain game comes to mind, that sounds like a good match for me.

Thank you SO very much in advance!
Jael :)

Some of my friends tell me to try Second Life and that it is nice...not for me, I am a PvE mass murderer!    But it might be what you want...I am not sure.

Saga of Ryzom seem to answer all your 'requests', but maybe in a wrong way.  Yet, it cost like $3 to get a free month, so I suggest buying the box and trying it, you will prolly love or hate it with a passion.  But don't tell me I didn't warn you, it is going to be an extreme reaction from you, I just can't pinpoint if you will loooove it or hate it.  Let's just say the game isn't intuitive at all and it is extremely 'hardcore', more than Vanguard will ever be or any other game trying to be hardcore can be.  The crafting has it style, the skill system remind me of Morrowind to some extand, the world is big and there are just no shortcuts, if you aggro mob X, Y or Z it might turn quite bad for you, however peoples are friendly and you might be saved by some bystander if you ask for help.  Great community, some off-game stuff...and you will never see me there, since I HATE their concepts and 'vision' with a passion, yet, I understand it and I respect it, they walk on the other side of the road!

    Thank you for suggestions!

Pre-CU does not ring a bell. Typing it into google brings me Star Wars Galaxies results, is that it?

Anofalye, thank you. I do actually have a Second Life account, and spent a couple of weekends there, but I was missing the game aspect. I know, Bingo, but I'm not really into Bingo.

I really liked There a lot, being able to hop on my motorbike, winning races, knocking avatars down with paintball guns, or flying through the world finding new, pretty-looking spots. Unfortunately There didn't expand enough, and there were no major developer updates since 2 years ago. Plus, most people just wanted to chat.

Anyway, Saga of Ryzom, would have never considered it, I never even gave it a second look while going through the Game List on this site. I remember looking at it a while back, and stopped when it said right in the beginning, "providing the 'must have' combat, magic and crafting system that players have grown to expect". BUT, it does look beautiful, user reviews sound promising, and I came here for suggestions, so I will definitely give it a shot.

Thank you again. I'm of course open to other suggestions as well :D

I would suggest Face of Mankind.. Science fiction mmofps. People really live into the game there, running into real life chatting is rare, or well.. was during beta testing, haven't played it sience they put a price on it. But I can say that from what I played, I loved.

Everything is player based, Market, Laws.. everything! Nothing beats randomly ganking(killing) then quickly act like nothing when LED Officers patrol by. And when you die in this game.. You die(Unless you've bought clones.. then you get ressurected into the clones and wait for a couple of min to heal before you can go and complain about the kill).

And if the LED catch you doing it, they will ask you to surrender, refuse and you're showered with rubber bullets that stun you, they PP check you and you go to jail where you serve time while your online :P

.. Bah now I want FoM again.. Anyways you can find it here.

Pre-CU SWG.  It was about as good as they get.  Not good enough for SOE though, so they destroyed the game.

Now, for folks who are optimistic and willing to wait...check out swgemu.com.  They're building a pre-CU SWG server emulator and are actively working on the project.  This could be very very good.

ryzom or horizons.  but if you really want to avoid fantasy, try eve.  eve-online, you either love or hate.  you either get it, or you don't.

if you try it, you have to do the tutorial or you will have no clue at all about anything in the game.  horizons, you can craft everything, to include the various houses.  ryzom has nice graphics, not really any housing, but you can craft pretty much everything but houses.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Horizons or Saga of Ryzom, both of which are fantasy based.

The list of Sci-Fi games itself is very short:

    Anarchy Online

    Face of Mankind (FPS style)

    Neocron (FPS style)

    Star Wars Galaxies

    Planetside (Pure MMOFPS)

    EVE online

Star Wars Pre-CU was awesome. Can't recall a game I enjoyed as much. Of course the NGE destroyed all signs of the master piece the game was.

Wow, so many suggestions! I'm very excited, and I thank you all very much!

Face of Mankind sounds very interesting, and very different. I have already installed the Ryzom client, but am downloading the Face of Mankind client as I'm writing :)

Runescape, I have to agree, is definitely not what I'm looking for. I tried that one for a bit a few years ago, and yes, it's hard on the eyes :P

Vanguard... is beta. It sounds pretty traditional, fantasy, sorcery, dwarfes, elves, and all that. I might see about getting into beta one of these days, unless I get caught up into one of the other suggested games :D Will have to keep it in mind though.

All this pre-CU talk, I hate that I missed whatever was so great about it! Believe it or not, I did not hear one thing about it, missed the entire hype. I might have to try SWG anyway though.

Horizons, it *looks* like all the others... dragons, armor, etc. But it does talk about building and crafting as well, so I will put it on the list.

I downloaded EVE a few weeks ago, but it looked so complicated, and I am a casual player, so I can't really put the time into it right now.

Somehow I completely missed Neocron while going through the list, and while I wasn't really looking for a FPS, it sure looks extremely interesting! So interesting that I will *definitely* have to try it.

Sooo, thank you all very much, I truly didn't expect so many posts and suggestions. I'm superexcited. Now I need to figure out what to try first, and will wish I had a few weeks of time off work! :D

    Mourning.

Now all you have to do is pay whoever made it a few million to host it and your set to play the most perfectly awful game you ever played.

Horizons is a VERY good fantasy.  The crafting is superb.  It's a small community that had a bit of problems early on but is now in fairly good shape.  Runs well, though the code can be a little funky at times.  Nothing that presents a problem once it's up and running.  And a very nice community.  I really enjoy Horizons (I have 2 accounts).  And, yes, it's pretty standard fantasy with a few major differences:

    1.  No class limits.  You can be anything AND everything.  You could literally be EVERY crafter and fighter class to level 100 (current cap) on the same toon.

    2.  Five characters per account

    3.  While it "has dragons", the difference is in Horizons you can BE a Dragon!  It's a playable race!  Complete with flying!

EVE is a very large, deep game.  It's kinda like a huge, deep EnB with fairly open PvP.  One of the best UIs in the business there too.  EVE takes a lot of time though.  It's skill based (not class based) but skills are built on time, including off-line time.  Your activities in-game do not build your skills.  In-game is about making the cash to afford all the equipment and about using that equipment to blow up bad guys, mine, build stuf and/or PvP.  It has a mission system that, again, reminds me a lot of the mission terminals in EnB, but taken to the Nth degree.  The problem I have with EVE is that there's a LOT of just zoning around, buying, selling and Fed Exing.  It's a good trading game.  It's a good space war game.  It's VERY polished and well supported.  It's also very beautiful.  But there's a LOT of zoning and it can take literally hours getting where you want to go if it's far away and you're in a slow ship.  I find it a great one to play while watching TV.

Xix13, you made EVE sound really good. From all I've read it does sound like "my" game, but I haven't had the patience to sit down and learn to play it. And I know there is a whole lot to learn. I'm sure I'll get into it eventually. Thank you for going into detail.

I appreciate everyone actually reading my post and making suggestions based on that. Very cool!

Sunday morning, a whole day off, trying to decide which one to try first :)

EVE is pretty good, although there is one thing more about EVE that makes it good fun.

The mature community. It's literally shocking when you realise you're watching the MMO chat and the people on it are not actually arseholes. They help, they care and even pirates and their victims get along peacefully. (most of the time)

Sadly though,I'm not able to hook up Paypal or something to pay for EVE monthly until after my hols, but I'd recommend it. The travelling sucks, but at least it's such a non-lag making game you could open up a window and easily do something else. But,long travels through low-sec space will probably be tense. Afk'ing during long travels CAN be costly,or it can not.....
