If I buy the new expansion, does it come with the rest or do I need to buy the rest and then this. Thats basically it. Thanks

Without the original, the expansion will not install.
You have to buy the original first....
But......Just play the original till you are high enough level to actually do some of the expansion dealios.
But, don't buy this game expecting some awesome pvp mode, cause it's all about teamwork and story not all this PvP bullcrap. See you online!

That is correct, the new expansion pack is not standalone; you can't do anything with it if you don't have FFXI itself. However, the current edition of FFXI in North America, the Vana'diel Collection" has both earlier expansions, so between it and the new expansion pack, you'll have everything. I also agree that you can hold off getting the new expansion pack until you're sure you like the game; Aht Urhgan has lots of important stuff in it, but there's not much for people under level 30.
