For anyone considering Guild wars

The good and the bad

I have played guild wars for a long time and in no way am i trying to tell people to play it or not to or if its a great game or it sucks, i am just stating my opinion on this forum for anyone wanting to know a little more about this game.

The good

Guild wars (as anyone will tell you) is a very addictive and fun game. Its easy to get into and it has a low learning curve. It has good graphics and the load times are great. The community is 50/50 when it comes to helpful people and jerks, but you will be able to find people that are nice and will help if you need it. The story is not great, but after all if story is the only thing you go for, a book, or a nice rpg on a consule is probably a better choice. The pvp is mostly team based and with a little work you will be able to find a team that will be able to hold its own. so overall it is a very good game in terms of what most people are looking for.

The bad

I am a vet to mmorpg and this may have helped me get far in guild wars faster then most, but if you are looking for something to replace your old EQ account or ultima, anarchy, or anything of the sort this is just not the same kind of a game. On my account i have 4 level 20 characters, am rank 9 for pvp, and have some good titles (surviver, Adept Skill Hunter, Fierce Gladiator) I'm not anything special, and to be honest the amount of time it took me to get the best weapons, and armor took really no time at all. The only thing that took me a while was to get Fow armor on one and Kurzick armor on the rest. What im trying to say is that this game is painfully to easy, and lacks substance. The pvp is harder because your facing real people (obviously), but even that does not require that much skill unless you get into the higher ranks  of players in tournaments and G v G. And i am sorry to all you hardcore guild wars fans (I used to be one myself) but any game where its possible for someone to reach max level without dieing once is probably a little aimed towards the noob type.

Overall

Guild wars is a great game, that I think (yes its only my opinion not fact) that lacks the depth to be played for a long time. This game will not keep you going for years to come, but what it will do is give you one hell of a ride for a while, and with it being free to play, what more could a person ask for.

honestly, any game that you play excessively you will get bored off, even if you don t reach max lvl a lot of people would get bored playing  a game 10 hours a day 7 days i a week, i know i would.

Guildwars to me has been excellent entertainment for over a year and i love it just as much as it was released still. and that s coming from someone with 5 years EQ under his belt who did Plane of Air in one sitting back in the day (with a 2-3 hour nap at halftime :P )

the biggest difference to traditional MMOs that i noticed. if i play Guildwars, i m having fun, after all if i hadn t fun i would do something else. now if we talk EQ and WoW i found myself constantly doing pretty boring tedious tasks ... that "had to be done" for "item rewards" so i could go on to the next boring tedious task.... for the next item(s) :P lol~

After seeing with Guildwars how a different system can work, honestly, i could never go back to a "traditional grind" style MMO anymore again. maybe i m stick of it, maybe i evolved past it........ but if i look at new games nowadays i always pose myself the question: will it entertain me? or will it try to make me grind to keep collecting money from me? .... and everytime i pose myself that question i m loving Guildwars just a little more.

Eh and PvP wise it is definitely one of these Games with longterm appeal, maybe not to everyone, but definitely to me There s very few games that have a permanent place on my Harddisk, however i see GW staying there for a long long time, with 2 other selected games (non MMO, but online multiplayer, one rts and one fps if you must know hehe) that i won t name as to not attract any flames hehe.

I completely concur. There isn't a lot of depth to GW. I don't find the one PVE campaign on each side of the game (original and now Factions) really worth playing more than once (or maybe, MAYBE twice)... it's the same thing every time. You can pretty much do every quest and all the story missions with one character, and then there's not a lot to do PVE-wise.

PVP can be fun, if you are into that (I don't really happen to be) in terms of ladder competitions and such, but as you say, there's not a lot of depth.

But again, as you say, there's no monthly fee. For $50, the campaigns are worth the price (they're as good and take as long to do as any normal single-player CRPG would probably take), and then if you don't log in much, it's not like you are wasting money. If there was a $15/mo fee (as is the norm) I would say it was not worth the subscription price. As it is, since the price is free, I like that I can just boot up GW whenever I feel like it, and play for free.

Another excellent point. You touch on something here tangentially... maybe it's not true for you (but from what you say I wouldn't be surprised if it is) but it's true for me... When I am paying $15/month, I start to feel almost obligated to log in at least a few nights a week... Sort of on the logic, "I am paying for these nights, so I should play." This makes you feel sort of obligated to log in, or else you are wasting your money. As a result, both in COH and SWG, I have found myself playing the game even when I really didn't feel like playing it just at the moment.

With GW however, I have never done that. Since it's free, and costs nothing over time, I'm not "wasting money" if I don't log in for a while. Heck I went about 3 months without logging in, and it didn't bother me.. and I just picked up where I'd left off the next time I logged in. I wouldn't do that with a more traditional game.. .if I didn't play COH for 3 months, I'd have already cancelled... and then there is that obstacle ("Do I want to re-subscribe?") to re-upping and whatnot.

Also I have friends who got tired of GW and quit playing it... One of them found out I was playing again and COH servers went down, and he said, "OK I will join you" and was able to just hop on and play. With another game he wouldn't have done that because he would've had to re-subscribe, and nobody would re-subscribe just for an afternoon while another game's server is down.

The free play adds to the flexibility, and I really like that.

The only way you could have than many lvl20s is if you have no life.  get a LIFE!

I think all the posts so far have hit the nail on the head, and I agree completely with almost all points, which is unusual for a GW thread, I have played most of the MMO so far as far back as 98 when I started playing this genre, and for the first time I cannot find one that I want to Play full time, I recently canceled my WoW accounts for various reasons

The best thing about GW is I can play it when and as much as I want too, as I dont feel the urge to get my moneys worth, I pre ordered GW 15 months ago and have played 942 casual hours (about 17 hours a week), I have never had the urge to grind, it has been a well invested £29, the only other game I have played that gave me that kind of value for money was Morrowwind Elder scrolls, which I played with all addons every day for a few hours for 8 months.

The only reason I managed to last so long at playing WoW was because I could play GW when I got bored or the game started to annoy me.

I am looking forward to Archlord, conan and later on WAR, but I will be playing GW in between, and if archlord and WAR sucks, I dont really give a shit GW is always good fun, I mean, really after all a game should be fun and not some deep meaningfull relationship.

One last point I think most players of GW have atleast 2 lvl 20's, after all it serves multiple purposes, one you unlock the skills and two, you get to understand the characters weeknesses in battle, before you make a arse of yourself in PvP

ouch your right i have no life, im not nearly as cool as people who go in forums and make fun of people. I should try to be more like you. And to get a person to lvl 20 takes about a 2 to 3 days of moderate playing if you know what your doing. So just because you suck at GW, dont take it out on me.

As much PvP as you want, as early as you want it. There's seperate arenas for levels 1-10 (although this arena has kind of become a bad idea due to twinks), another for 10-15 (quite fun usually), then the random arenas for levels 15-20, the Team Arenas and Hero's Assent both for level 20's. There's also Aliance battles for those that own Factions. Within each of the arenas, there's different objectives (chosen at random in everything but Hero's Assent), which very from "Kill Opposing Team", "Kill Opposing Team As Many Times in a Time Limit", "King of the Hill", among others.

PvP is also very fast paced, and will give you a workout at every level. Highly recommended.

Your poll doesn't go high enough. :)

I have 2 GW accounts with 10 character slots. Nine of them are filled with level 20s. I'm still trying to decide what I want to do with #10.

Yes, I enjoy GW that much, and agree with the posters that suggested the free play takes the pressure off. When I played CoH, I felt I needed to get to level 50 as fast as I could (took less than 3 months) and the grind was horrible. I felt that way because I didn't want to feel as though I was wasting my money.

GW is great because you never feel like you have to play to get your money's worth. And if it ever gets too frustrating (like trying to find a monk in THK), you can walk away for awhile completely guilt and pressure-free.

There is no grind in GW. Less so in Factions. It's just a fun and relaxing game to play.

Now, if we could just get people to stop spamming ads on the All channel in chat, the game would be great! ::::02::

I agree, you can never have too many level 20 characters, especially considering the fact that right now there are so many different possibilities for builds, especially farming. For the most part I now play PvP so I just reroll alot of different pvp characters, however I'm always wanting to create different characters for the ever-increasing amount of things to do in PvE. Gotta love the high game content...

  • I tried GW and I somehow don't seem to connect. I find it so lame but because it is free I wish I would like it. It sounds so repeatitive. Could it be I didn't played long enough? It seems all the quest are more or less alike, the only thing changing is the name of the monster to kill.
