PVP in Final Fantasy XI is called Conflict, and since XI is based around community, it is in the format of a game instead of battlegrounds and such. There are currently only 2 versions of Conflict, Ballista and Brenner.
In the first form of Conflict, Ballista, the goal is to score the most points. To score points you have to obtain Gate Breack Status, by killing off a member of the other team. Once Gate Breach status has been obtained you have to use Objects known as Petras, Which you have Dig or "Quarry" for and throw them into the goal, AKA the Rook. The team with the most point at the end of the round (which is about an hour long) wins. For participating in Ballista you get an EXP bonus and if you are part of the winning team you will receive a money prize.
The second form of Conflict, Brenner, resembles Capture the flag, only with fire or "Flamme-Brenners." Each team has a set amount or flamme-brenners, half of them are lit and the other half arent. Your goal is to light the half of brenners that arent lit by stealing flame from the other teams already lit flamme-brenners while protecting your own flame from the other team by killing anyone who tries to take your flame. To steal flame you have to attack the flamme-brenner until you get the flame and than running back to your flamme-brenner and lighting it. You can quarry just like in Ballista and also get Petras, but the Patras in the game are to restore HP/MP instead of scoring.
Those are the only forms of Conflict in FFXI at this time, but I do see more coming in the future.

Yeah, I thought they were gonna do something with that, never really took the time to read into it. Any DIea how its gonna work? =/ Just killing rampages or what? lol
So..... there are no sides...good vs evil....bad guys vs god guys...one army vs another?
I gotta admit it sounds...interesting for sure... totally unique and ya gotta tip your hat to FF for that....
I guess we were looking for PvP in the more classical sense like in other MMORPGs.
