Questions from a returning FFXI vet....

After playing about 4 MMO's back to back to back to back, I felt it was time for me to take a rest from the MMO world.  My most recent MMO that I quit was World of Warcraft, and now after taking about 2 1/2 months off from MMO's and summer approaching, I feel as though Im ready to start up my addiction once again.  I'm a Final Fantasy XI vet who played for about a full year, from the time of the PS2 release in march of 2004, to about late febuary/early march of 2005, when I quit FFXI for WoW.  When deciding on the MMO I wanted to play, there was just something about Final Fantasy XI that made me want to come back.  It's an undescribable feeling that I had when I played the game, and I want it back.  Anywho, being as I am returning to the world of Vana'diel from over a year's break, I have a number of questions that I hope some current players can answer.

A.) I played the game on the Playstation 2 when I was an FFXI subscriber.  I now am leaning towards a fresh new account on my Xbox 360.  Should I go with my 360, or is PS2 still the "preferred" platform as far as interface controlling goes?

B.) Is it smart that I am starting a fresh new account, or should I revive my old account because it's too hard for new characters to jump in the mix?

C.) The main 3 reasons why I quit FFXI were:
       1.  Between the long waits for finding parties, the endless grind to gain levels, and pretty slow traveling system, I was required to put in long sessions of time to progress my character even the slightest bit.  Is any of this fixed now?

       2.  I know this game is not neccesarily "made" for PvP, and I hope I got my PvP thirst quenched for a while when playing WoW as this game wasn't able to do the trick with Ballista. I heard of a new style of PvP called "Brenner".  Is PvP anymore, well, like your typical Player vs. Player action now?

       3.  Gathering gil was a pain in the ass, especially with the constant inflation of item cost within the game.  Is the whole money system a bit less of a pain the ass?

Thanks to all who answer, I just wanna be informed before I re-start that monthly fee ;)

    A) If you have an HDTV go 360, If not... I guess its up to you Since your graphics won't change either way <.< I'm on pc, I've played it a bit on ps2, but I prefer to use the keyboard. Some people just like diffrent things.

    B) I'm almost 100% certain by the info you gave me that your old account is gone. Content ID's will only stay on their database for 1 Year, After that its automatically deleted. And if you wish to come back You would have to buy a new copy of the game for the Registartion codes. So... If you can play on 360, That would be A LOT more convieniet, Since it comes with Base FFXI & the 3 expansions. Back in April.. Like 2 months ago? FFXI was released on the 360 (As I know, You know) But along with that there was an influx of new people So unless 200-300 People have all Hit max lvl in 2 months, You should be okay. And even then there are people who are constantly picking up new jobs.

    C) :
    1) No, FFXI is still very time consuming. You've played it before You know how it is, Only thing thats changed is they lowered the exp tnl from 50-75, that happend about a Year ago.

    2) Ummm I don't see what you're talking about if you didn't like Ballista, As it was PvP with points. Nations agaisnt Nations. Brenner Is Party agasint Party, I dunno you'll have to ask somone else I don't play either.

    3) Theres always inflation, theres about 10,000 People per server, there arn't set prices, So it fluxuates. If your lazy, and spend more time sitting around talking to your LS and bitching on forums about how bad the inflation is Then you will be poor, And be a victom of not the Economy, but your own lazyness. This game is very easy to make money on, Lvl 1 char, Can make 40k/hour easilly without ever leaving the home city by just fishing(btw they changed the fishing sytem, its more interactive now). By lvl 15 I can farm an average 60k/hour.

I just thought I'd add a few things to the previous post to hopefully help your decision-making.

This sounds much like me, actually.  I spent over a year on WoW and came back to FFXI full-time because there was something indescribable about the game that called me back.

I play on the PC as well, but I think the 360 would be slightly better than the PS2, but you may want to resubscribe with your old content ID in case Square-Enix still has your account waiting for you.

I don't remember how long my account was inactive, but I'm certain it was for more than a year, and yet my character was still there.  I've never heard of having to buy a new copy of the game just to play again (unless someone has been banned).  I'd say if you liked your old character, keep him/her, because there are always a million more things to do anyway, like leveling new jobs or doing a new craft.  Starting a fresh new character is always fun though too.
C.) The main 3 reasons why I quit FFXI were:

There are some cool new things that speed up your leveling a bit, especially in the earlier levels.  Buy an Empress Band from a gate guard and use it every time you solo or party for exp.  It gives you an additional 50% exp up to 1000 (or for 3 hours) which is a significant chunk usually.  The new corsair job has an ability to give the whole party additional experience.  I found that partying now seems smoother than what I remembered it to be.

I've found that overall, once you learn the ropes a little bit, the game speeds up a lot.  Leveling goes much faster and traveling becomes a breeze.  You should do supply quests so that you can travel the world using outpost warps instead of other slower means.  There are items like Warp Cudgels that you can buy to warp you when you need it.

Nope, there is no traditional PvP in the game yet, although the new Arena game looks promising (in an upcoming patch).  I like ballista, but I haven't tried brenner yet.  I'm really not a PvP enthusiast, however.

Inflation surely has occurred while you were gone, but at the same time, the stuff you probably own, and the drops you'll get are worth more, but there are still cheap items for leveling.  Farming items is very lucrative if you know some good spots.  Food has experienced inflation, but  it's not out of reach. Endgame stuff is incredibly expensive as expected I guess, but it drives me nuts!  ;-)
