What game has the best crafting?

I've been playing MMOs for a while now, and I'm starting to realize exactly what it is that draws me to this genre of games, and I mean aside from the obvious social interaction. I just find building things much more rewarding than killing orcs. I'm sort of between MMOs right now, though.

I started with ultima online and eventually moved on to EVE.  I've been playing EVE for about a year and it just isn't holding my interest anymore. I tried SWG but it was post CU, so I thought the game was terrible. However, I was blown away by the depth that the crafting system in that game had. Just the sheer number of resources and the number of possiblities was astounding.

Also I really don't mind grinding, its sort of a nice mideless activity that's relaxing.

Basically what I'm asking is, can anyone suggest a game to me that has a great crafting system? Thanks a lot (and I hope this post makes sense.)

SWG if you can tolerate the rest of the game. otherwise I hear Horizons has a great system if you can tolerate the rest of the game. EQ 2 after that would probably be my next suggestion.

Buy a sharp knife and a block of wood. Whittling is far more satisfying than any in-game crafting you'll ever find.

wurm online would be worth a look

FFXI has one of the most indepth crafting systems of any game I've ever played.  Thousands and Thousands of items to make includeing HQ(High Quality) Sub Crafts, Moon, Day of the week, Direction you are facing all play a huge factor.  Its very deep and detailed and one of my favorite systems I've seen in a game.

I've read a couple of reviews about Wurm Online and, although it might look interesting, they say it has a terrible UI and such a minimal amount of details about it that it's very difficult to get started.  It has a wiki but a really bad one with almost no information.  I keep wanting to give it a go, but I think I'll wait until people start either posting useful information about it or they sort out a better wiki or manual or something.  Hopefully, they'll sort out a decent UI, too.  I get very frustrated by badly thought out UIs!

I absolutley loved SWG's crafting system it was by and the best ive encountered in any game so far, the collection of resources was amazingly good used to spend hours scouring the universe for ideal spots to lay my harvesters.

Loved the housing/vendor system that went with as well had a great shop location outside tatt that did some amazing business proper little enterprise.

Other than that ive never got into crafting tried in wow but once master tailor couldnt be bothered same in uo, pld eq2 for a while and it wasnt bad but levelling was dull, dull, dull.

I’m not sure I would be a pure crafter in EQ2 at this point, it has an ok crafting system, but it does have some problems.  There isn’t enough variation in crafted items, so if crafted items are too good everyone ends up wearing exactly the same equipment.

The solution the devs have arrived at is reducing the quality of crafted items so that the stuff made for rare items is below the quality of the legendary items that drops from group and even solo rare named mobs.  The common crafted items are close to useless, I know I don’t wear any of this at all, even the stuff I can make myself.  For named mobs inside most shared dungeons the drop rate for legendary/fabled items can be 30% or more, so it’s a lot more effective to kill stuff for drops then to craft it, even of you don’t raid.  I suppose I can understand this but it does leave crafters out in the cold.

The other problem is that it can get repetitive.  When I craft I run the game in a window and fire up a movie or TV show from the library on my PC.  I spend most of my time making imbued rings from rare material which are one of the few really good pieces of crafted equipment.  Most of these require you to make them perfect every time or you can’t imbue the result and you end up with a ring you have no hope of selling for anywhere near the 1-5 plat the rare cost you.  Even so I have yet to mess one up, even when watching a movie while crafting, so there isn’t a lot of challenge there once you figure stuff out.

Overall I guess there are worse crafting systems out there, but there are better as well.  If I wasn’t watching movies/TV while crafting I think I would find it very boring at this point but since I can watch TV while crafting I’m still having some fun with it.

That game is pretty good. You make everything from all resources around you. Nothing is bought. You build everything from the ground up. Its a very rewarding game and the skill system reminds me of UO when it came out.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

yes wurm online is nice but slow steep. somehow i missed something.

if you want some combat to do as wel go horizons, it has good crafting classes. but the rest of the game isnot very good...

no combat and historical based ... i must say a jewel..is a tale in the desert..they just started their third version .. here you can craft and build every day, farm, do acrobatics, keep sheeps and camels. Everything you all do effects civilisation and the world. you truly can live their.

its not all solo game..be aware you need to do things in groups as well to get forward..

    very nice communities ingame.

Have no fear, Xru is here.

Ryzom's crafting is nice. Each material has different stats. Combinations of materials have various effects on the product crafted. There is a lot of experimentation involved in figuring out the best "recipes" to make better items...so being a good crafter is more about personal knowledge and experience than numerical skill level.

It reminds me of making jewelry, in a way. XD Picking and positioning beads so that the necklace (or whatever) looks just right...it's much like picking materials to acheive the desired item stats.

If you want a space MMO that keeps your attention then try Star Sonata... It's 2D though and the graphics arent as spectaculair as EVE, but the game play and community has got many paying customers hooked for years. The thing about Star Sonata is that the community is very tight and is quite involved in the game, even if they dont think so. But it's a lot more active than EVE, you'll literaly have to fly your way around the Universe to do things, although there is an Autopilot (which at times is useless due to AI trying to kill you.)

But like i said, it isnt as Flash as EVE but offers more game play at the cost of expensive graphics.

And as for crafting...if you can build up a base you can use blueprints to build a huge set of items...wether for cash or not. Slightly different from EVE though, you need a working base that can support itself (aswell as protect) and many blueprints have lists of items and commodities that you need to provide to build the item.

    It's called exaggeration.

I know that grammar and such things aren't really being learned anymore by people, so I thought I'd be helpful and point out these little linguistic techniques.

I would seriously suggest you try There out. It isn't your everyday kind of game, in fact it isn't a game. There is in fact a 3D user created virtual world. Anything is possible inside the world of There and you can choose what experiences you have. Your options or activities are not limited in There, not by far. You choose what you do and in There all members are helping to build the Metaverse. They are helping to build the single most advanced platform in existence. That isn't opinion but fact! So go ahead and try it out. I know you will love it and enjoy it like I have for so long. Live a happy virtual life in There!

The only limitation in There is your own imagination!

    I think it's a pretty cool idea.

It adds a cosmological and mystical feel to the game.  Thus, making it more immersive.

Horizons has/had the best crafting of any game I played. One of the reasons why it was known as Craftizons.

    I am curious.
How would you describe crafting exactly? And do you also enjoy selling it afterwards? Do you think skill enhancement is necesary gameplay for crafting?

SWG's crafting system is so detailed you will never ever see anything like it for ages, I promise you that. Too bad they dumbed down rest of the game making it look like "the fast noob guide to mmorpg's" and they also made all crafting professions almost completely non-profitable.

But that's what SOE does best.

EverQuest2 has really OK crafting system too. And it's REALLY profitable too, and fun. Make tons of weird and fun food which owns, make weps, armors, furnitures, alchemy stuff and potions, yeah there's tons to do.

Crafting Systems, in my experience and opinion, in order:

#1, still... to this very day:  UO.  It's not the most detailed system.  It's not the most complicated system.  But it is, hands down, the most FUN crafting system I ever used.  It is the ONLY system where I actually ENJOYED crafting.

#2:  SWG (but the rest of the game has been radicallyl altered by the NGE (and the bulk of the profitability in crafting has vanished as well due to the changes SOE and LEC made).  SWG's crafting was a little too intense for me.  But it was a great system nonetheless.  I never really got into it but those who love crafting loved this game's system  My biggest concern is that SOE and LEC still haven't decided what they want SWG to be when it grows up.  I'd be affraid to get too involved in a game that could change with the next secret 'upgrade' they throw at it.

#3:  Horizons  - Not sure if this game has a future, however.  Population is dangerously low.

#4:  EQ2 - Nice system, a bit intense for my taste, but very detailed and well thought out.  It can be a bit overwhelming though.

#5:  Saga of Ryzom - This one and EQ2 are so close in 'quality' it's scary.  Ryzom does things a bit differently, however.  Which of them is 'better' is really hard to figure out.  I didn't particularly enjoy either of them but both are very good crafting systems.

    Anyway, hope this helps.

There are other games with crafting out there, but those are the top 5, in my opinion.
