Hey everyone I'm new here and I'm starting to get interested in these kinds of games. Can anyone give me ideas for games that would be a good introduction for a beginner like myself?
All MMORPGS are basically the same. They all include a lot of mindless leveling and some quests. Some also allow you to fight against other players. What keeps most people interested in a game is community and content.
You might want to try out a free one or one that is in public beta, like Fung Wan Online or Lineage II. Also a lot of MMORPGS offer a free trial now too. I think Anarchy Online, Shadowbane and Neocron all offer a free 7 day trial. Go take a look at some websites and find out which game appeals to you the most and try it.
I don't recommend AO for a rookie. That game has a relatively sophisticated skill/class system and oodles of options for weapons and armor that makes it a tough learning curve. I think the same can be said for AC1, provided you want to do magic. Plenty of information on fansites to explain how to do all these things, but you do have to research it a bit.
Ultima Online may be a very good start. It's pretty simple on the surface, but has plenty to delve into. Trammel makes for a safe world, and you can go to Felucca to have some PvP action if you like it. The game is now 6 years old (yes? maybe 5?) and has MILES of player-made documentation at fansites. It's solo-friendly, and you can join guilds for more adventure. Graphics are very dated, but UO is the foundation of MMOG...that and EQ tend to be the point of comparison for all MMOGs.
Outside of that, you can pretty much consider them all to be on an equal playing field.
Hey you two thanks for the input. I actually looked at everything you two mentioned and I would have to say UO seems to be the safest bet for a beginner like me to play and not get frustrated. I am still looking around though. Thanks again for the help
I would reccomend dark age of camelot to a noob. very easy to play, many classes, skills, places to explore, and a GREAT community!
I wouldn't suggest you try Anarchy online first, unless you feel like researching your class alot :P AO has a very very complex skill system, and as a noob you can gimp himself to all hell (AO was my first MMORPG and I learned the hard way). however im not saying AO is a bad game! I for one LOVE AO and played it for about 6 months till I moved to daoc
just to take alook at some others out there, starwars galaxies has gone to hell and is now full of macros and exploits. final fantasy XI is good tho the leveling in it was a bit slow for me. everquest is great but 99% of its player base is 1000's of hours above a noobs level and you would find youself soloing often. one game few people look at is the sims online, I did the beta and enjoyed it alot. its not really a mmorpg though. Planetside is fun but the fun fades after about a month of playing it. earth and beyond is good, I had alot of fun in the beta but I don't know what its like retail. asherson's call 2 SUCKS. I LOVED shadowbane, best pvp/guild system around, player cities/nations, wars, and good skill system (hard to get into though and not for the non pvper). untima online is great, but from what i've seen few still play it.
im currently playing Horizons and neocron. Horizons is great, but im not enjoying it as much as DAoC. and Neocron is good, but its a pvp game and a first person shooter (so not what everyone wants in a mmorpg)
I can't wait for guildwars and world of warcraft!!!
Well Lineage II has a very playerfriendly beginning.
1st thing you do when you start playing a MMROPG is creating your character. Many MMORPGs have very difficult stats which you can modify personally. This might be hard for a n00b since you need to learn on fansites what the best stat combos are.
Lineage II doesnt deal with stats (it has stats but you dont need to modify them at the begining).
So when you start playing you just choose your race and if you want to be a magician or fighter. This is pretty convenient for beginners.
I would say for a noob UO cos thats what got me into mmo's and I still play them even after 6 years. I love the mmo enviroment and gameplay style keeps me hooked big time
Yes I suggest you try Earth And Beyond... because theres alot of cool clans that would love to help newbs just like yourself... So give Earth And Beyond a try... it has a 14 day free trial so you will have lots of days to learn... and try only Terran Enforcer... because thats a good beginning of the game.
I see alot of good games suggest above but not many good games for a new player MMORPGs. Firstly you'll probably wanna stay away from a pvp oriented style game AT FIRST (I wanna emphaize as first) because they tend to be more vets of the category and don't offer as much help as you may see in another (carebare if you will) style game. The game I would strongly recommend for a new player is EverQuest. I recommend EQ because it has forms of all the different types of MMOs. Once you play it for a while you'll be able to recognize whats important to you in an MMORPG as there are a few different styles such as PvP, RolePlaying, and PvE.
Yes, I think I am going to agree about Dark Age of Camelot. If you are just starting with MMO's DAoC will provide an easy start for you. That seems to be one of the easiest games to play regarding interface and gameplay options. In second place I would also say Earth and Beyond. But like someone said above, try the trial first
::Yordo:: EQ2 Guild Search UXO, Lineage 2, KO, Guild Wars, Dragon Empires, City of Heroes
true... but so does Earth & Beyond and its a MMOSRPG (massively multiplayer online space rpg) it means that your running a ship and creating your own legend.. and id say to try this prolly when your experienced in the lower forms of rpgs...... and if you start it will allow you to have newbie recognizations and give you instructions on combat, exploration, and Trading which is most important in Tradesman.... and they will give you a 14 day trial without hte use of credit card for age recognization.
