Hey all, I'd recently been at a dead end for a good mmorpg to play until the other day when i suddenly thought, hmmmm what about EQ2 again. So i looked into it all again and bought DoF for £5 from gameplay, the game came the next day and i created a new account (i was switching servers anyways so i didnt need my old chars) and got my 30 days free again (DOF + original for 5 quid, about $10 what a bargain).
I really cant belive how much has changed, the whole starting area, hell even the process of making the character has changed for the better. You now get to pick your class from the start of the game which is awesome, you really get to start learning your class earlier on and kinda feel more valuble which is great. It also cuts out those boring class change quests that had you running around here there and everywhere.
SOE have also added the option to switch to alternate character models, in other words, you can change from the US EQ2 character models over to the SOGA ones which have a more asian look to them, but they look awsome, they take away the whole clay look that some of the original character models gave. Humans and Ogres in particular look alot better with SOGA alternate skins on them.
The whole atmosphere of the game is just great to, Id only been playing a few hours and id already made new friends. Its got alot of people playing even in my timezone (GMT) and i play on Nagafen the US pvp server (the best one ). I cant wait to explore the rest of the world and get into some PVP and hopefully a nice guild.
So to anyone who quit EQ2 a while ago i highly recommend giving it another go, especially if you quit before getting DoF or any other expansions because they are so cheap now that you just cant loose out. I'm sure many of the old players who have quit will like what SOE have done with the game alot and will enjoy playing again.
Well done SOE, they really have improved EQ2 alot over the months iv been gone.
Anyone from UK who wishes to buy it check out Gameplay £4.99 DoF+Orignal EQ2 cant belive how low the price is for the expansion and the original game (30 days free with it to).
Thanks alot
Garrik

As much as I want to give EQ2 another go, I keep telling myself that the level's 18-25 are so unbelievably boring, that twice I have quit over it. First time it was on Qeynos side, I had a Barbarian Berserker, which was before their new class system. Next time I chose to give a PvP server a go, and made a Dark Elf Assassin, but going round the commonlands was - well...boring.
I have nothing else against EQ2 except for time spent in the lower level zones, if there were alternatives (dare I say it) like WoW, where multiple zones can be of the same level, I would enjoy it so much more.

Iv never really felt a grind in EQ2, not even when i played in the past, im usually so involved in the game that i dont even notice my exp bar. If you play the game just to level then of course your going to feel the grind, but if you play the game to enjoy it and have fun with ever battle you have then its not so bad.

Cant really beat £4.99 for a full game, one of the expansions and 30 days free.

Welcome back to EQ2 Garrick. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, and still do!
I've taken a break from it to try out some other mmos, but none are as much fun as EQ2. On the Antonia Bayle server, you will find an excellent community which makes it an even better experience.
Ut oh The goddess of Luck and Good fortune is welcoming you to EQ2 Make sure you don't fall on her bad side or bad loot drops will be your misfortune for eternity Every now and then I consider re-subbing to EQ2 then I come to my senses and remember I hate the cost of that game too much.
If they'd quit charging for friggen expansions I'd think about it. A monthly fee is bad enough.... but paying $180 a year to play a game then being expected to drop $30-$50 every 7 or 8 months on an expansion on top of that is just insulting.

After playing through numerous MMO's and enjoying a few of them EQII was probably one of the worst ones I have played to date. Their Customer Service was some of the worst I have experienced in any game, and the quest system had me running around doing the exact same thing over and over and over. Just to get some item I would outgrow in a level or two. Leveling was the worst aspect of EQII after the first 15 or so levels it was boring as hell to just fight the same monsters over and over then occasionally get a good drop of loot that you would sell, because frankly it sucked for you. The grind of doing the same things over and over was horrible. And why the bad graphics? I have a top quality graphics card in my new PC, custom built, and after editing all of EQII's graphics settings I could still only get the 3 closest details on characters to show... What the heck? Anyways I would never return to EQII, it would just be a mistake.
IMO 18-25 fly by, all it takes is 5-10 hours in Stormhold with a good group and you are set, you will probably even pick up a few masters along the way. If you don’t like Stormhold you can try the Crypt of Betrayal, or Fallen Gate or work on the many Heritage quests starting in that range like the dwarven work boots, Lightstone, Shiny Brass Halberd, Polished Granit Tomahawk, and a few more all have significant portions that can be completed in that level range. On top of that there is also armor quests to do in that level range.
There is no way you are going to get all of this done before you hit level 30 let alone level 25 and that is without considering any of the adventure pack and I’m sure there are places I have missed.
I concur, the game is really boring. It doesn’t feel like a continuous
world, and there’s not much going on in terms of adventure or discovery – get to
a new zone, keep killing the same two or three monsters over and over again
until a series of local quests is complete (i.e. grinding), collect loot, go
back to the city, sell loot, buy a slightly better equipment than what you
currently have. There’s no point is grouping, because it’s easier to level
solo, than to try to coordinate your actions with group members. I tried to
play EQ2 twice – first time about 1.5 years ago, second time about a month ago.
Both times I didn’t progress past lvl 20, because the gameplay was a waste of
time.
Glad you are enjoying yourself. I started in EQ2 at launch and have cancelled and re-subbed some 4 times over the past year an a half. Every single time, the game has been great in the early going, then just got so old and repetitive around level 20ish + or so.
I play WoW because it is fast, huge, diverse, and has just about everything I have ever wanted in a MMORPG. I know a lot of folks say WoW is a 'kiddie' game, but I doubt very much if these folks (even though they may have level 60 chararcters) have EVER made it successfully through any real Raids. I am talking about ZG, MC and so forth. Ones that take thinking and coordination and planning. Don't be fooled, getting to 60 in WoW solo is easy, but so what? There are a number of different 'games' in WoW. The Solo game, the Instance game, the Raid game, the Crafting game, the PvP game, the Rep game, and so forth.
I digress. I guess what I am trying to say is that EQ2 could have been a great game. However, they took just about everything that was BAD in EQ1 and made it a cornerstone of EQ2. They removed the heart and the fun out of the MMORPG and have been trying to inject it back into the game for 18 months now.
I am afraid it is to late. EQ2 will always be around, but I fear it will only ever have a fraction of the population that EQ1 had at its zenith (400,000 or so).
So, have fun, pay for Box, Monthly Fee, Adventure Packs, Expansions, Character Slots, Gear, etc, and so forth.

Since you brought WoW into this.Tell me about the crafting game in WoW.Please note you are talking to someone who maxed 6 tradeskills in WoW.And then make your compare it with the crafting of EQ2.
Most of WoW crafting is terrible easy and simple to max, most are useless apart from when you are a newbie, most are totally boring with only engineering been any fun and again not very useful, enchanting the best of them all to get the nicer recipe you grind rep and then grind more over and over like any rep in the game.
So exciting ! And where do you buy gear for real money?ebay, exchange server?Oh just like i can buy epic gear from ebay in wow and all mmorpg!
As far as the grind, i will admit that leveling is alot slower than it was in WoW, but really from what i can remember, it's still faster then it was in EQ1 (before luclin XP bonus zones). One thing i have been doing with my alternate characters is buying the level 50-70 collections and turning them in, which levels them super fast and a nice way to skip any beginning content you may dislike. (wondering when sony will nerf this, as i can level a level ~11 character to 24 in the time it takes for me to examine all the collection items).
Another thing i enjoy is lower level raid content, from the drakota in antonica to deathfist citadel in zek and so on. Going on fun raids like this are enjoyable and try and tell me the last time you were on a pickup WoW raid that went without any hitches.
Having my own home and the option to go buy new homes and for people to visit is also well implemented and a cool thing to hang old or unuseable heritage quest items you have as well as books and other trinkets you find along your travels. What it really comes down to is playstyle, state of mind, and how you like to game. I think if your going to give EQ2 another chance, come at it with the mindset that you are just going to enjoy it with the community and not strive to achieve anything except having fun, i think that it will give you a completely different perspective on this game.
EQ2 is like that. Like I've got a character that is level 48 right now. He can choose between Everfrost and Lavastorm to go play in. Actually, there are even some upperlevel quests to do in other places like Enchanted Forest and Thundering Steppes for him at his level as well. And if you feel like getting the adventure packs that's even more content for you outside of the normal stuff to do at that and other levels.
Did I understand what you were saying correctly? If not, then I apologize.
It really does change after the lower levels though, there are more choices of areas to go to. And even later you get to pick between the expansions, like at 40 you can start in the Desert of Flames. And then later on you get to choose Kingdom of Sky. Unless of course you'd like to remain in the original upper level territories.
There's super bookoo amount for big you.

Hey thanks for posting that...see I never made it past 23, so I assumed it was one zone per level "range" all the way to max level.

Kudos to SoE for giving $10,000 to charity, but they would need to go a long way before I stop boycotting their games thanks to them f'ing SWG. In fact I'd have to get Alzheimers or something and forget what happened for me to even think of buying another SoE game.
No annoying animated GIF here!
This was my "dream game" leading up to its release. It was going to be the game to end all games for me. Really thought it would be... but the constant zoning and the unnatural zone boundary resitrictions ruined it for me.
WoW stole my heart because I could move so freely.
EQ2 has some mighty fine points. Crafting, housing, mob encounter groups, and some other details are worth the time, sure. But, eh, it's mostly more of the same. And the community just doesn't seem as "in" to it as in other places.
I could have been into it longer with a good group of friends, but nobody really went out of the way to talk to me, so I kinda quit. It's like I always say, I don't solo because I want to, only because nobody else is on; otherwise, I love having someone to help me beat things up and chat with.
I think the issue of zoning is this. Its up side is they can pack much more on a server.Downside ofc is zoning.
Truth be told as you get higher you zone much less.Initally a lot of the quest involves running within the city and surrounding zones.
As you get higher you are kind of fixed into one area for a while or an instance so you really spent hours without having to zone. And as you get higher you can afford tickets to transport you to different zones without having to run there or multiple zone.
