Beta Testing

Is there any other way to get into the beta testing other than just wait for the newsletter every month for them to announce the monthly winners for the newsletter subscribers because I really want to test this game and I've waited for ages and ages.

Currently that is the only way. As we get closer to time for beta I'm sure there will be plenty of other ways though. :)

Well thank god then because I really want a place and at the way I'm going it looks like I'm not going to get a place!

well there has to be another way.

2 years of newsletters would only gather 120 testers assuming 100% participation .

I saw something on the Mythic site about guild invites and maybe something for DAOC players, neither of which has details yet.  And it sounds like the DAOC thing is only an idea so far.

    Bring on the beta

I'm sure they'll have guild applications.

They've stated they'll be taking people who are active AND constructive out of some of the popular forums like they did for DAoC.

There will be contests (and is one from gu comics) in magazines and such.

Here are a couple quotes (credit to only-war.com, where I found it)

    Quote:
    Folks,

    Some beta info:

    First, the no-nos

    1) You cannot work for another game company

    2) You cannot work for any of the item farming/selling companies

    3) Constantly asking for invite will not get you anywhere (nor will bribes)

    Now, the yes-yes part

    1) Good, solid posting is a plus. It can't be of the butt-kissing kind but nor can it be of the "U Suxxor" type. We pulled in people from the sites we frequented for DAoC and we'll do the same here. What we are looking for are people who can communicate their thoughts in a clear and concise manner.

    2) The willingness to write reports (short of course) and respond to questions from the team are necessary. If you are looking to just play the game early, wait till the final stage (playtesting) but if you want in and want to help make this product great, be prepared to talk to us/write to us about your experiences (which is why #1 is so important).

    3) You must be willing to do what we ask when it comes to testing. If we say we need certain things tested, you must test them. Completing quest #2 when we asked you to do scenario #1 will not keep you in Beta.

    4) You must be enthusiastic about the game (enthusiasm != blind devotion). If you are not psyched to be part of the Beta, give your slot to someone who is.

    5) You must remember that you are in a beta test and as such, bad things will happen in the game. Things will break, things will be changed and while we expect it to be fun, there are many things that will occur during beta that will be annoying. You must be able to deal with it responsibly and not go all Raging Bull on us.

So, just some information to keep in mind.

hey austinnot so be mean but they said in one of there interviews that if you are going to treat the beta like a demo then they will kick you. they want people who can do what they tell them to do, on eof there examples was: If we say test quest #2 and you go and complete scenario #3 then we will kick you from the beta and replace you(don't think we can't relpace you) END So yah if you want to just do it as a demo i suggest you reconsider and just wait like most people will have to but if you will test the game to make it better in the future with no bugs or unbalaced player then jump on in and have some fun gl man hope you don't think i am being mean just don't want a guy getting a once in a life time thing then getting kicked off.

Good news, it's just a waste of time to have accounts and bandwidth tied up in people that have no intention of helping.  Testing phases are not meant to be a "free to play" period.  That can wait for stress testing when they need to pack people on by the fist full.

It would be nice to get in and all, but I want beta to start so at the very least theres more news coming out.  It gets a little rough with 10+ sites all rehashing each others interviews.

I hope the strategy works, maybe future MMO's will now be released in a more solid state with less bugs and technical issues.

Believe me or not, I don't even want a beta account.

I want a fresh start at the release (though I wouldn't mind a 2 days open beta ^^).

This is all good stuff, but they also need to balance it with the following:

    1) listening to what the players have to say.

    2) polling beta players on particulars like " are goblins overpowered?"

    3) participating on the boards with objective posts. " youll like what we have planned, or"were working on it, or 'we have a plan" doesnt cut it. Tell us what your doing and why. You have community managers for this.

In the end the beta will only be as good as the following:

    1) the game itself ( bad games turn out bad beta's no matter what you do)

    2) the developer interaction

    3) the forum community

Its as much the developers responsibility to make sure beta resources are actually being used, as it is for beta folks to be properly participating.

Theres not much room for complaints when the developers didnt listen to anything the beta community had to say.

Warhammer Newsletter signup page and chance to monthly score one of five beta slot.
    Current issue.
WAR website game backstory The Age of Reckoning is set in the "modern" Warhammer world. This is the world in which Karl Franz is the Emperor in Altdorf, Finubar sits upon the Phoenix Throne, and the High King of the Dwarfs is Thorgrim Grudgebearer. (world of Warhammer Fantasy) For starting characters, there will be roughly 80% PvE content to RvR content, changing to 20% PvE and 80% RvR at the highest levels.

Beta testing is scheduled to begin fall 2006. The game will ship simultaneously in US and Europe in the fall of 2007 for the PC platform. Initially the game will support English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

    Official forum:
Mythic does not run its own forums, but we strongly support the efforts of the community and their many forums and fan sites. We will regularly check-in with these sites to share news and information about the development process, and hear from the community regarding their hopes and desires for the game.

even tho i am rather unpatient for the game to come out, i still find it abit ruinning(for myself) that i already know EVERYTHING about the gameplay, before it even comes out, and you have to lvl a new character to some lvl...

i like the idea of players helping finding bugs, so the game can come out to the stores faster tho ::::01::

This is primarily numero uno in any beta testers toolbox.

I have been beta testing MMO's for 6 years now and I WILL say without a good repore with the developement teams beta testing ends up being a demo and stress test.

I cannot tell you enough how many screams from the crowd there were in swg alone before launch and trust me the rest of you felt it the first week.

This is not a chance to see the game early first, this is a chance to make sure the game operates first!

You must understand every thing the game is based on especially the mechanics.  WAR will be primarily "Beating the snot out of (someone)" as quoted from E3 itself. :)

So what will be on the plate primarily?  Can you sucessfully have a challenging match with some and all players (RVR is another focus) without feeling you are being cheated because the imbalance is simply there is another attack which is 99.9% impossible to defend or counter.

What does this point to? Balance! Granted we dont' want to play a game where stale m8 is a likely possibility but you want the "Wins" to feel rewarded.

I also cannot tell you enough, even in just straight console games (including fighting games) where I could swear the other side was using some sort of hack or other unfair advantage only to find out that person is just "That" good.

I love a great challenge as I feel confident we all do.  It's the best reward when you can look at your opponent(s) and say "Well damn...that was an amazing battle...I can't wait till the next opportunity" and then the brain just starts spinning and whirling with ideas and strategies to put into place for a better opportunity at a win.  NOW THAT IS A PVP/RVR GAME!

  • borkksborkks Member Posts: 15

I'm not so sure that balance is completely achievable accross the boards and still maintaining diversity. This is of course in regards to PvP. PvE is fairly easy to balance.

An example of one of the more balanced PvP RPGish games would be GuildWars, but that simply reinforces my above point that you either have balance or diversity. Clearly, DAoC has proven that the idea of balancing the realms (as opposed to the classes), while a great idea, doesn't translate from paper.

Although, I'm hoping that Mythic takes some lessons learned and applies them whole-heartedly to War.
