Can I still enjoy the game? Will gaining currency be a problem? Thanks.

What if I DO like crafting? I was a master Armorsmith in SWG for a long time, and I still haven,t found a game with as satisfying a crafting experience and economy as pre-NGE. Is there a demand for crafted items? What kind of things can you craft? How rough is the road to becoming a proficient crafter in this game?

  • From what I've read (I'm still waiting to play) Ryzom is run by the crafters. Everything is made by crafters, you're veritable gods! >;P But I've also heard horror stories of the grind and work required to advance, but it's an MMORPG, isn't it?

Eventho u can buy NPC armor and weapons (which are a lot worse than player crafted items), all things u want are crafted by players (magic amplifiers, armor, weapons, even some tools).
It takes ages to become a high lvl crafter (grinding) but that doesnt mean u cant craft great stuff at lower lvls. There is a very sophisticated quality system in game and the challenge in crafting is to find recipies that max out stats (which is really hard ;)
A crafting action is very basic tho (u just select mats and craft the thing) not like for instance in everquest2 where it takes ages to craft all the components.
And the newly introduced experience crystalls save u from a lot of grinding :) not from all tho...

You have to find the recipees and for these you´ll have to find the right materials to put into. And for there being a huuuge amount of differnt Materials, both looted and dug from the ground, wich all can be combined to reach differnt effeckts ... well you´ll see its something for those who like riddles  and try and error.
You may always ask an accpmblished crafter for his knowledge but IF he´d devulge it to you, well thats a nother question .

I like to see it as a kind of Master-Apprentice relationship and thsts something I realy like about the Game.

How does one find crafted goods?

I have nightmares still about spending an entire DAY going from vendor to vendor in SWG on three different planets looking for torches -- TORCHES! -- to decorate my house, because hardly anyone bothered to make them at the time (people were more into the static lights in those days, so that's what crafters focused on). I'm all for a player economy but I want to be able to find what I need relatively quickly if I can't make it.

Is it hard to find crafted items or is there some sort of large public auction house (or the like) that people can use?

There are NPC merchants in each city. You could also order directly from a crafter, but you'd have to know who crafts what etc. Best way is to be in a guild - then you're likely to be able to get anything you need.

Well, you can always ask an established Crafter to build something for you.
And the "Vendors" aren´t that much used anyway. (Mostly people with too much money abuse them for storeing space )
Most peeps keep their own shop, so to say, meaning they build on demand :)
Just ask nicely and they´ll build it. And if it´s something common most even wont charge you.

i think crafting and digging is uber on SoR. Its the main part of the high-end game. Crafting and digging is the same thing.

Well i can understand people dont like Crafting/dinging. But SoR is a game where you dont need to kill a fish or a rats when you need a piece of armor. Uber mobs or uber zones have nice materials. U need to have a very good crafter if you want to see the uber item you want. Digging/hunting/crafting system on SoR > all others drops systems.

This game have the best high-end solo you can have. by far. Hunting/raiding is just a little part of this high-end. Just a few players understand the right rules for digging at the right moment on the right place. If you arent harcore this game isnt for you. I have done 6 epics on everquest and it was way more easy than what SoR Can give me today.

ps : sry for my english.

    Many have answered it.

If you are an achiever, you will need friend/contact who craft for you if you don't craft yourself.  It is possible to enjoy the end-game without crafting, it is annoying, but it is possible (unlike many other game where you have to be doing what the devs figure is the end game).

It will also be a concern of your whole life, a concern you can work around, but a concern nonetheless, as all items decays.  So if you don't craft yourself, you better have a crafting friend.  Of course, if you are not an achiever and think non-raiders can enjoy WoW, all I said is irrelevant as you can enjoy SoR just perfectly.

Still, this is not too bad IMO, either you, your contacts or your friends will have to craft for the end-game...and don't forget, the items decay!

You dont really need to craft or dig to enjoy the game. Some people prefer to craft/dig and some dont...i myself aint much of a crafter/digger but i do intend to work it on some time soon.

As for the weapons or armor that you need, like what others have already suggested, get some friends to make some for you. Its not too difficult to find friends or someone who is willing to help you in the world of atys since the majority of the community here is helpful and mature :)

Currency imho in ryzom will never be a problem, except maybe in the very early stages of the game.

Most crafters in game i believe wont mind making you choice equipment and some might even make u some excellent ones if they have spare materials required by the recipe lying around.

  • k3mistryk3mistry Member Posts: 6

Most of the newly crafted equipment with full HP will definitely last you long enough before you even need any new upgrades. There is only one slight problem though if you decide to start with your Ranged Weapon skills.

Ranged weapon requires ammo and ammo in ryzom runs out pretty fast. The only way to get a constant supply of your own ammo is to start crafting/foraging them for the materials needed as you raise your ranged weapon skills rather than bugging somoene to constantly supply you with ammos.

Of course if you find someone nice from your guild or a friend in game thats really nice who is willing to constantly craft a supply of ammo for you, you wouldnt need to start on that any time soon :)

what kind of things can you craft? ok let me give you an exemple with Heavy armor.

1)Basic or fine armor : very common , used for lving your craft, very low protection. (digging and/or mobs materials)

2)Choice armor : common, used for lvling, low protection but ok if you have a good recipe. (digging mats)

3)Excellent armor : uncommon, used to be sold with npc. Decent protection with a good recipe.  (digging mats)

4)Excellent armor with best recipe : rare, used to be sold by /tells. Good protection (recipe with good digging and named mobs materials)

5)Supreme armor : uncommon or rare. Used to be sold by /tells. good protection. (supreme digging mats)

6)Supreme armor with best digging recipe : very rare. Used to be traded or given to very good friends. very good protection(dedicated supreme digging mats)

7)Supreme armor with top materials and best recipe. Ultra rare. Used in guild, never sold, rarely traded. uber protection (dedicated supreme from king mobs + some dedicated digging materials).

8)Boosted choice armore : uncommon, used to ne sold with npc. Decent protection. (crafted with a special tool in a specific circumstance).

9)Boosted excellent armor : rare. good protection. used to be traded.

10)Boosted classical supreme armor with good recipe. ultra rare. Uber protection. used in guilde, never sold, rarely traded. Uber protection.

11)Boosted uber supreme armor. ultra rare, 1 on each server?  Awesome protection.

If you are a good crafter you will see a lot of clients. But you will never be a good crafter without digging your supreme mats or having very good friends hunting/dinging for you.

how rough is the road to becoming a proficient crafter in this game?

If you want to craft heavy armor, its very hard. You need 6 lvls ( 250 * 6 : helmet/gauntlets/legs/arms/chest/ boots ) maxed if you want to do the best quality armor. whithout help from a good guild You need... a year if not more. Usualy you just need one lvl 250 for crafting (sword, axe..ect...). well now you can have a guilde help : people digging for you, hunting for you, exp boost..

Recipes arent hard anymore for heavy armor. Most of the recipes are now well know and some high-end crafter will prolly help you. but you still need to experimente by yourself, because clients may ask for differents or specifics things.

What do you call a "proficient crafter"?

-if its high lvl crafter well thats not realy hard. there are plenty of crafters.

-but now if its experimented crafter... you will need to be an excellent digger or hunter for supreme mats. You will need to make perfect armor and have a perfect reputation. If you do that people will come to you with nice mats and will ask you to craft for them. in return you  can ask for supreme mats in return. But you have to be the best or one of the best.

This way is very hard but you can start to craft supreme mats at lvl 100-150 and you will enjoy your job. At the end, crafting the best item in SoR is only possible for dedicated players... with a lot of time to spend in the game...

As many have posted before, crafting is not a skill you need to have yourself, but you need to know someone that does craft, because as it is now, only low level things and grind items are sold to the merchants, the rest goes on inside guilds and by friends.

I do however advise to give it a shot, it's not like you have anything to lose on it, well maybe a few dappers, but those can be regained.

I myself love crafting, finding the best materials for a good combination, to get the right colours on your armour and get the highest damage on your wepons, without spoiling the speed and durability, and most of all, to be able to get the mats without being overloaded in Death penalyt *sighs happily and hopes the patch is done soon*

    *hugs from lil me*

*Brain down for upgrade, don't try to understand my logic, I don't...*

  • jackobajackoba Member Posts: 124

you can easily play this game without crafting, in fact some of the most uber players dont craft at all.

mob drops are high enough that you can sell the mats to crafters and make tons of dappers. Most uber gear you will get for free obviously depending on who you make friends with. Guilds are usually geared up with a few decent crafters so even throwing a few mob drops to them means you can contribute to the guild in general.

of course if you do enjoy crafting, be prepared for a grind but once you reach the peak of your skills the game is ever so rewarding.

one day I might bother to master a craft tree *sigh* (after 18months of play)

If you don't craft you can still make money by either foraging and/or "quartering" animals you kill and selling the resources to players rather than the npc merchant.  If you kill named boss creatures that are found rarely in each land you get some excellent and supreme resources that will fetch a lot of money.

Also, once you join a guild there is usually plenty of money, resources, and crafted items to go around and you can get buy with never purchasing anything, if you have an active guild and they like you!

You can buy items from the market that are not made by players, but they are "basic".  The items that are Fine, Choice, Excellent or Supreme have extra bells and whistles that make them costly and more desirable.
