Games have expectations.. We evaluate and judge on what we expect. Wizardy I would be hammered today, but was a great game in it's day..
DnL was promised to be an amazing game. Graphics and massive PvP.. dynamic NPC civilizations.. A game mature gamers would love..
It sucks.. Now let's be clear, many games suck, but none billed itself to be so good.. Blacksac lied to the public about this game.. Farlan Lied.. It seems anyone with a financial stake or an emotional stake lied.. And they lie to this day.
Many a game has not been great on release, but not one I ever encountered actually tried to make customers believe the game's faults were the customer's and not the game's. Until DNL..
If people like Blacksac had played the game (yeah that helps), and said the game is not good, but this is where we need to go.. people might have given support. If the Devs had said they had a concept that is not the norm and needs time, a concept that will be great, but please support us and give us time.. They might have lived.
Instead lies.. Sog is not Beta, Sog is not DnL, DnL is not DnL.. People like Blacksac do not care that people wasted money. They do not care that Farlan is a thief.. They care that they are praised by an unknown Game Dev that lies and steals.
The result? The worst rated game ever.. I've played bad games since I started gaming in 1978.. but this is the first and only that I asked for a refund. This is the first and only that I felt was bordering on criminal fraud..
And you can thank Blacksac (and those like Blacksac) for that..

Blacksac deserves this posts blame and so much more. How many people on this board has he personally attacked? How many people has he called a troll. How many times has he purposely bumped his pet threads in order to drop posts that state the truth of the game lower. He is not only a shrill, a dupe, but the worst kind of troll. One who refuses to psot anything of substance andrather just engages oin personall attacks.
When we told him last fall the based on comparison to other games in developement DnL looked it was going to be a bad game. he called us names and told us to leave the forums. When SoG was released did he apologize. No he just kept us his personal attacks and spam posts. He just started saying SoG=DnL. id he ever try to address the overwhelming evidence that theyw ere the same. No he just continued his thread bumping and name calling.
When Dnl was released and it became quite obvious that everything he has posted has been lies did he apologize tho those he has continously insulted. No of course not now he hsaid DnL has potential. I don't normally endorse pewrsonal attacks but he deserves everything he gets. He has spem,mes this site insulted posters and to my knowledge never posted even one post with anything of substance. Rather just parroting Farlans lies and talking points.
I have no problem with him or anyone posting personal opinions, being excited about games but I do have a problem with all the personal attacks and insults he has heaped upon others posters because of his inability to actually address their arguments. The sad thing is he has proven wrong again and again but he still continues his senseless spam and insults. At the very least he could back up his porpganda and insults and actually support the game he loves so much.
But the original poster is right. The fanboys are the ones to blame. By buying into Farlkans lies, refusing to ask questions, and financially supporting these lies they have allowed farlan to steal from their customers. The only way to stop bad and dishonest companies like Farlan is not to support them with money and by posting their lies on forums. If not for the realists or critics of this game this release wold be a 100 times worse. Most liklety if we had not stood up and questioned their lies they would released this as a pay to play back in November as they orginally intended.

If you love the idea of a game, great.. promote it.. Many many here did..
If you love the potential of a game, even when it is bad in beta.. promote it.. Many, many here did..
When a game is a few weeks from launch and still is a steaming pile, you might want to shut up.. Unless you don't care and have a vested interest in it being a winner.. Most here didn't
When a game launches and fails to deliver on 90% of the promises and is so bad you yourself won't buy it, you best hang low.. Only Blacksac carried the flag.
Blacksac didn't develop this game, Blacksac didn't code this game.. Blacksac just decided to promote it no matter what.. I don't see how that makes him above reproach.. "I was just following orders" just doesn't cut it.. Take responsibility for your actions..
The game failed because of the incompetance of NP3, period. No need to attack another poster over it. However I will agree that the higher the flight the farther the fall, and Black did help hype a lot of peoples expectactions way over the top.
That's why I will never take a job in marketing. Most of the successful people in that field do not have a conscious.

I believe your thought is free speech must be so sacrosanct that we must not ever question the speech, just the points of the speech. Am I close?
I'd have to disagree if that is the case. If ones views induce action on the parts of others, actions that are based on lies, then I see no protection.
Calling "Fire in a movie house" is the classic example, though it doesn't fit here due to magnitude. But the basic concept is the same. If you use free speech to advocate a bad thing are you immune from criticism?
I'm not tarring and feathering here.. I'm not threatening life or health.. I'm saying Blacksac is one of the reasons this game failed. False hope, false promises, and yes lies..
Blacksac doesn't have anything to do with the low ratings, the incomplete launch of the game does. He did hype it, but I always enjoyed the screenshots.
Oh and I started gaming in 1975 playing Pong on the ferry to Vancouver Island from Vancouver. I was pwning adults at it when I was 5 lol but I digress. First home system I got in september of 1976, it was a Telstar. That thing was the shizzle when it released lol

Blacksac has done nothing but ATTACK those he/she considers a "Hateboi".
All Blacksac does is go on his/her crusade to advertise D&L anywhere he/she deems fit.
Blacksac hasn't even played D&L yet feels it is ok to ATTACK the "Hatebois" that actually did play the game.
At this time Blacksac does not even sound like a fan but acts more like someone that is paid to advertise D&L.
Also this is the best post I found so far during the development stage of D&L.

seems that this game is starting to get noticed there. It's a big site
with a lot of MMORPG fans registered. I think we can thank blacksac for
the sudden rise in interest. He/she has been throwing out a load of
detailed game info there. Stuff we all ready know but the MMORPG
community as a whole doesn't.

So as a NEW player who hasn't really listened to all these people who are crying about being lied to and accusing Farlan as being a theif... well.. i paid and i'm happy to have done so... The game is everything i thought it would be and more... Hope to see you in Game soon!
Again I will say we disagree. I believe that much of the negetive rating is a result of false hype. The games DnL gets compared to had no hype, noone to say they were the next best thing since porn.
Hate is the opposite of love. They promised so much love that they inspired the reverse hate. Too esoteric? Ok.. How about this.. If a one night stand doesn't work out, you move on, no harm no foul.. If you find your life mate (or the one that promised she was) in bed with another man/women you will be far more hurt.
If Blacksac and others had remained realistic and didn't try to raise false expectations the backlash wouldn't be so hard. Did Blacksac code this trash? No.. Did Blacksac make a bad situation worse? You bet..

I started in 1978.. a tape game on the TSR called B-1 (hardly ever loaded).. That doesn't include the first Atari some years earlier as that was console crap (I'm a PC elitist
) Later Wizardry I and a space game where you launched missions decades befoe they took over a world.. your goal was to rule the universe.. I wish I could recall the name of it.
BTW: The Vectrex rules all.. Now that was a game system

Let's put it this way.. I went through Air Force Survival Evasion and Resistance Training (SERE), and you got me beat..
That's why I like Mexican food.. everythign includes only 5 ingredients.. Meat, cheese, Tortilla, Beans, & Veggies (no beans aren't a veggie in Mexican food).. No matter the combination I'm happy..

Its like being handed a almost finished model, with only a few touches to put onto it.. adn instead of just putting it together as planned, you rip peices off and start remodling it just for the sake of it.. al the while NEVER really doing ANYTHING.
The guys at NP3 are morons.. the lot of them.. they somehow swindled some guy to make them the big world, then they just coasted along.
I hope choke on shit, since they have lied to the community since day 1
