I couldnt seem to find the answer to this rumour that i heard.
Basically, me and a few friends are looking for playing a new MMO. We are interested in FF however, i was told that you could not choose the server that you were on and you had to wait till later till you could buy a pass to change your server.
If this is the case i am not interested, as i would like to start out with a few my friends all on the same server rather than having to wait and pay for a ticket pass.
Could someone clear this up for me please
thanks

Mostly true, but not all the way. There is hope. By default your world is chosen for you, and you and your friends would most likely wind up on different servers. In order to choose a world, you must have a WorldPass for that world, which has to be bought ingame on that world. But WorldPasses are not expensive for experienced players and such players are often willing to buy them for new players when asked nicely on open forums (Forums devoted specifically to the world you want a WorldPass for work best, obviously; many sites devoted to FFXI have such forums). If you want to join on my server, Remora, which I feel is not a bad server, I'd be happy to get you a WorldPass for it.

Just another thjing to add to ChrisMattern's post, one world pass can be used 5 times, so you and your friends can use the same worldpass.
Thats not exactly true, for new players who dont care where they go, the send you to the server that needs you. If you have a friend on a server they can give you and your friends a world pass.
If you want a world pass to Remora that you and your friends can use hit me up at robpa2002@hotmail.com

Risky. It's true that they send you to the world that needs you; it's a load balancing mechanism. But the definition of which world needs you can shift quickly, as witness the effectiveness of the old practice of deleting and recreating your first character until you got the world you wanted (they've changed character creation to make that less practical now). If I was entering FFXI with a group of friends, I wouldn't want to gamble on the system sending us all to the same world, even though that's possible and even likely. I'd rather have the WorldPass in my hands as a guarantee we all go to the same place.
BTW, you're on Remora too? Who are you? My main on there is Conradus, 39 RDM.

Say me and 3 other friends make characters and we all end up on different servers. How would i get a world pass to each of my friends? or do they need people to buy a world pass for them on each server? or is there some sort of internal mail system?
Thanks again

You type in the server name, hit enter, then it asks for a worldpass. A worldpass is a series of numbers such as 75630974650(not real) or something like that. What you do is have someone on these forums send you the worldpass and server name, you share the information with your friends, and they input the information when making their characters as well. A worldpass is valid for up to 5 people.
When you're making your characters theres an option to pick your 'World' I think it is, might be server.

Note that worldpasses are used in *creating* chraacters. They are of no use for *existing* characters, existing characters cannot move from one world to another (except in a migration, which isn't relevant to this discussion and I won't get into). So you don't create your characters and then look for wordpasses Say you get a worldpass code for Remora, thanks to some helpful vet who bought one for you. When you and your three friends create your characters, you each use that code (it's good for up to 5 character creations, so it should work for all of you). Instead of being possibly scattered to whatever worlds the game might choose for you, you all create characters on Remora, so you're all still together.
In your case, since you don't care which world you're on as long as you're all on the same one, it's possible for you to get a WorldPass on whatever world you end up on for the friends who didn't get to that world (remember, you buy worldpasses ingame, and a worldpass code is always for the world it was bought on), but while WorldPasses are pocket change to vets, the price is pretty steep for someone just starting out (I've seen prices ranging from 1000 gil to 3500 gil, and have heard of higher). You'd probably have to work for a while to get it, while your friends wait. You're better off, IMHO, in simply asking around. Experienced players understand the problem quite well and are generally more than willing to help out by getting you a worldpass.

Thanks for all your help

When you create your character, you'll get a server. If it's not the one you want, no problem. Just delete and redo. It's not that time-consuming, I promise. I had to do it once when I deleted my Taru to make a Mithra, and I forgot to ask a friend to buy a WPass.
It's easy when you know how. I stopped playing two years ago because I didn't have the money, but this was the best game I ever played, and I love it very much, so I hope you and your friends have fun.

Um, yes, it is time consuming. They changed character creation to discourage people from server shopping like that. You now do not know what server you got until *after* the intro cutscene (which is quite long).
