SONY IS THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY, but they are also sharks changing the industr

Neurox1Neurox1 Member Posts: 260

they have screwed up all their MMO's and turned billion dollar franchises into complete money losing crap ...

their movie to game translations have sucked now for a long time ....

they have lied about the ps3 and changed its specs about 11 times now .. and arent even using the original chips they had promised ( remember the 9 core cell design running XDR3 and the dual GDX video chips? )

they have lied about games saying they are IN-game rendering, which later was found out by editors to be cgi renderings not even running on ps3 dev systems .. but on apple dual g5's running on code not even compatible with the ps3

they are putting security measures into their discs so you cannot rent or trade PS3 games or buy em used

they are putting new measures to stop console modding to stop players from buying and playing japanese games ...

they are buying up other mmo companies to try and grasp firmer control of the market since they cannot do it through consumers ....

and they are now opting to publish for MMO and other game companies and sharking their way into market share by doing so ...

and now are trying to conform the optical disc market under ONE medium BLUERAY which they alone hold the rights and patent to

ya what about eq and eq2?

i used to play both ... neither are any good .. and neither have a strong community ....

id rather play .. WOW, DAOC, AC, EVE, GUILDWARS, COV, COH, Lineage2, TSOR, ect .. ect.. ect..

i mean we all can agree no one wants to play EQ because of the game ... the few people who still play only -play to keep in touch with their friends

and eq2 ..i mean come on who wants to search for a group for three hours? the game runs like shit .. combat is low .. PVP sucks ... ? sheesh

Look at the parent company for example its share have dropped to its lowest in 20 years they are throwing out there arms grabbing anything they can hold on to.

My Grandmother once bought a Sony product and got such bad customer service when it broke she never bought another Sony porduct again.

A while ago i was talking with my mother and i just happened to ask about Sony (around time of NGE) and she told me it was a bad company when i asked how does she know she replied ive heard it of lots of people.

Ive played SWG - i know the details of the PS3 - blueray - rootkit.

Sony is in such a sorry state it isnt even confined to one generation :(

Hello? Who doesn't? Expanding offering is how you gain customers.

and they are now opting to publish for MMO and other game companies and sharking their way into market share by doing so ...

Yes. They are a publisher. How did they acquire EQ and MxO? What about PlayNC, who does 0 in-house development, but only hires outside companies. What about Vivendi, who owns Blizzard, Sierra, and some smaller studios? How did they obtain them? PlayNC owns or is closely tied to dozens of development studios. Microsoft purchased tens of thousands businesses along the way.

It's a cutthroat business. Game and entertainment industries are one of the harshest investment domains out there. Companies that survive in those conditions need to be good. Not just in making games, but in selling them, developing them, and supporting them.

How many topnotch companies do you know that no longer exist? How many excellent developers went bankrupt? It's one hell of a competition for a very limited, severly overcrowded, yearly changing market.

Edit: Some answers above relate only to SOE.

Oh i think the price of PS3 alone will be an issuelol mommy can i have ps3? sure hun let me sell my kidney, hair, teeth and your kidneys on ebay will start the bidding at $1000 lol. I hope that stuff about making the game where they cant play on other consoles and cant trde is em true because then you will see the mass exodus for PS3 that you have for SWG and the will get sued up the ass like when they tried to do that with the music CD'S where u couldnt burn them and they were spying on your PC and they LOST!! so i think Nintendo will make a bigger then life comeback here if this all true. Sell your SOE stock now if you were stupid enough to buy that bag of hammers lol

And the only saving part of that was Angelina. The rest sucked as well. Doubly so in the sequel.

movie companies, video game companies, and the video game industry has still been growing in leaps and bounds ... and is larger than it ever was before ....

which clearly dictates that the industry is healthy ... so more strict measures arent needed .. its another attempt at increasing profit margins at the expense of gamers ... we have grown up with the ability to RENT .. TRADE .. AND BORROW GAMES ... i for one would never buy a video game system that doesnt allow this ...

you bring up microsoft .. TWO WRONGS DONT MAKE A RIGHT .. and look how the end user has SUFFERED due to microsofts monopoly over the market .. we get a UNSTABLE OS ... VIRUS RIDDEN PC'S and OVERPRICED PRICED PROGRAMS AND OPERATING SYSTEMS, AND NO IM SURE THAT LESS THAN 2% OF THE WINDOWS OS'S INSTALLED IN END USERS PC's ARE ILLEGAL SO THERE IS NO REASON FOR M$ TO PRIcE GOUGE ( THERE IS A REASON THEY WERE THE FASTEST GROWING COMPANY OF THE LAST 100YEARS )

and last but not least SONY NEVER INTENDED to release a 9 core central processing unit with hyperlinked ( as in no memory bridge running XDR3 with those experimental graphics chips to the public ... the system would have cost over $10,000... the proposed specs on the cell were greater than the $2,000 POWERPC IBM server chips ... dont be so naive .. IT WAS A BLATANT LIE CREATED TO HYPE UP THE PS3 AND DRIVE ITS MARKETING

what i honestly dont believe is people who will defend a company when that company IS CLEARLY destroying the market of something they love ....

Lowest piracy rate is 21%, and that is in US. Most of China has piracy rates above 80%. That goes for all software, not just Microsoft.
During the times when Apple was strangling competition by enforcing proprietary hardware (remember Sony's proprietary solutions), Microsoft offered free for all, runs on all hardware operating system and software. They were the Blizzard vs. SOE of their time, if you wish this comparison.
They made a product for the masses, and thereby enabled access to the numbers you see today. They also made huge profit out of it.

Do you know ATI sold complete series of graphics cards, where the specs and box clearly stated it supports the digital TV, whereas that chipset was never even installed on that card in the first place. They actually charged for something that never existed, and even cost more due to features that don't exist.

    Just a recent example

Defending? No. Just stating the facts of industry.

Yea and thats the thing. Sony is no longer a big player in the electronics world, Samsung, Pioneer, Phillips, Panasonic, and even Zenith and Polk have passed way by them in terms of quality and bang-for-buck. Sony is the brand for people that know nothing, end of story. The PS3 will just further their demise, espically considering the Wii will only be $250 or less (fact), and the 360 will be lowering its price by $100 when the PS3 launches (rumored).

For the price of the PS3 alone with no games, you can get a Wii, an extra controler, and 4 games. Thats assuming controler is $50 and games are $50. Gee that PS3 sure is alot of fun without any games. Give me a break.

I agree about not supporting a company that destroys its own product. The only problem is look at SOE now its on life support but still alive. I hope its different with PS3 if thats true about the cd's cant trade or use used ones

bullshit ... i work in the industry .. so i have first hand knowledge .. there is NO way to accumilate the % of pirated software .. BUT FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I KNOW ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO 21% ... if you have 40 programs installed on your PC .. and one is pirated ... thats doesnt equate a full % towards piracy ... but a % of your installed programs which is factored into the overall % ... so if you have ten people ... where every person has ONE pirated software copy ... thats doesnt equate 100% piracy ....
this whole idea of piracy with video games is a big shitstorm created by sony and other companies to give them an excuse to squeeze more money out of consumers ... have you ever met a developer from an established gaming company who was poor? PLEASE

no ... you OBVIOUSLY dont know the history of computing ... MICROSOFT was catapulted THROUGH IBM .. which at the time HAD A MONOPOLY ON x86 HARDWARE !!! with its government funding/connections .. and its overbearing investment capitol it put lesser funded platforms out of business .... and microsoft rode the tide of the x86 monopoly ( arguing that x86 and IBM didnt  have a monopoly is pointless since MANY US SENATORS ACTUALLY TOOK ACTION AGAINST IT .. OPENED THE x86 PLATFORM UP TO CLONING .. and SPLIT IBM IN THREE .....
as anyone with any knowledge of computing knows .. on TOP OF THAT MICROSOPFT STOLE THE WINDOWS GUI INDRECTLY FROM XEROX AND VISI-ON, whom actually apple stole it from first ....
microsoft remained on top by giving ultimatums to software developers monopolizing drivers for hardware, and forcing out competitors from retail stores with their MONEY ....

I work in the industry myslef as well.

Piracy is calculated as ratio between legally purchased copies and illegaly installed copies.
As an example, until recently, it was impossible (due to no distribution and export restrictions) to purchase Microsoft products in Vietnam. Despite that, they were using Microsoft products on their PCs. This equates 100% piracy ratio.

OverviewUSA at 22%, lowest piracy level of all.

this whole idea of piracy with video games is a big shitstorm created by sony and other companies to give them an excuse to squeeze more money out of consumers ... have you ever met a developer from an established gaming company who was poor? PLEASE
So it's OK to steal from rich, because they have enough? And yes, many game developers go bankrupt. Established here means they made it. The rest are not mentioned, like everywhere else.

Yes. This is where the IBM PC-Compatible term is from. Microsoft didn't do that. They merely provided an affordable OS that worked with all such cloned software, rather than just with genuine IBM PC computers. The cloning here refers to the, at that time crucial and proprietary BIOS. IBM PC as a brand was shortly after put out of business, since they could no longer control prices with monopoly, causing increadibly cheaper products running Microsoft OS to be made available to much wider markets.

as anyone with any knowledge of computing kno
ws .. on TOP OF THAT MICROSOPFT STOLE THE WINDOWS GUI INDRECTLY FROM XEROX AND VISI-ON, whom actually apple stole it from first ....

And logitech stole the mouse, also invented there. The WIMP paradigm, the basis for Lisa (Apple) and windows was invented at Xerox think tanks. Just like tons of other ingenious ideas, which would have probably never seen the light of day, due to Xerox being unable to market it.

microsoft remained on top by giving ultimatums to software developers monopolizing drivers for hardware, and forcing out competitors from retail stores with their MONEY ....
Yes. They relied on it for the revenue. It was core of their business model.  Microsoft realized the market power of providing centralized driver model. Under DOS and other xOS clones drivers were luxury. It was Microsofts key selling point, and the enabler for creating a uniform platform. While others were locking down, they opened.

AGAIN TWO WRONGS DONT MAKE A RIGHT >>> IM NOT SURE WHERE YOU ARE GOING WITH THIS>> ever hear of BUSINESS ETHICS!!!?
Ethics? Hahahahah. Yea, a guy standing in line at soup kitchen told me about them.  Please, don't say you're so naive.
No, two wronds don't make a right. It just goes to show, that everyone's business practices are the same. Ethics is a luxury nobody can afford in capitalistic society.

facts which i stated to begin with .. so why not agree with me instead of trying to give excuses or examples of where other companies have done the same??!
Oh, sorry. Thought this was a discussion. Next time state it's your vision of the world, and nobody disagree.

    I'll stop discussing now.

The purpose of US industry is not to fulfill customer's needs. It is to create the need. While a sarcastic comment, it does describe the state very accurately. I believe this was first mentioned in the 60-ies or  70-ies. But it could have been earlier.
