i'm not a blizzard fan boy. just an avid hater of 95% of square soft(fftactics is good). and therefor square-enix.
does anyone even know what the enix part makes(not as popular in US and probley Europe). some dragonquest thingy i think.
as for blizzard. warcraft, starcraft are both good strat series. WoW is sucessful i guess.(even if for mildly wrong reasons, looping in a lot of new MMO'ers, and wouldn't work again for blizzard).
now why are we comparing a branch that makes very good Strat games V. a company that makes very good anime(aka: very hate-able) games again? this is very much so an apple and orange thing.

blizzard has stolen every concept idea from games workshop lol. The only orginal idea they had was diablo. Doubt me go look up warhammer fantasy battle or warhammer 40k. The comparisons cant be ignored. Wow was cookie cutter generic easy mmo. Never played the ffmmo but the orginal game of square got me hooked on rpgs.
ps if you never played final fantasy series then the odds are youd be completely lost in advent children.
Square Enix does far, far more to tinker with game mechanics in all their games than Blizzard ever did. Sometimes it's a good thing, althought they have had blunders (FF8). Overall, they at least try to think a bit out of the box here and there.
Blizzard's made some fun games, but it's not like it was all that crazy-new. They've only got one strong suit, and that's marketing. I mean, honestly, if WOW didn't have the hype that was generated about it, and the Warcraft series didn't already have a strong following, WOW by any other name would have been quickly sneered at as another "EQ clone".
But let's give up to our boys in Blizzard. They know how to sell a product like nobody else.
Blizzard doesn't bring anything new to the genres that they make games for? Are you serious? They still play Starcraft / Warcraft at all major tournaments, including the World Cyber Games. That HAS to say something about Blizzard's games. Not to mention WoW has over 50% of the MMO customer base covered.
Square is definetly a great company, but they've gone downhill in recent years, in my opinion. Tactics is my favorite FF.
But I vote Blizzard hands down.

Warcraft and Starcraft had their predecessors. Hell, I remember Westwood games being more popular at one time than Blizzard could ever hope to be. Command & Conquer, even that really old Dune game.
Starcraft and Warcraft have basically not changed much of the RTS market. You do precisely in those games what you did in, say, Command & Conquer and similar fare. That's not innovation. Good business. But not innovation.
As for WOW, just because everyone plays it doesn't mean that it's innovative. It has not one thing in it that wasn't done in another MMO first (and, arguably, better in some cases). It's just spit-and-polish that makes it what it is. And a good marketing team.
Square is definetly a great company, but they've gone downhill in recent years, in my opinion. Tactics is my favorite FF.
Why they didn't take a cue from Tactics and refine that type of game better I don't know. But I'm also not sure why they put out FF X-2, either; it was like FF Meets Britney Spears. Pretty, but not all that nifty.
Square's at least trying different things, though. At least they, unlike Blizzard, put out something every year or two, usually with some kind of crazy new system or other...
I'd have to say Square, they've simply made far more games than Blizzard over the years, and many of them are very good.
I wish FF12 was just an updated FFT. That game was simply amazing. FF 12's battles system shares far more with FF 11 than FFT, and the character design is more the type that were in FF 10. The story may be similar though, hard to get much of that from just the Demo.
Each company does a heck of a job in each category, each game they had has gone strong storylines in each game they have created and they will continue to do so. But for the sake of the poll, i voted Square, because of their changing games, whether it be the FF Online, or Kingdom Hearts, and they have some of the best dynamic characters in any game i have seen.
Well if we are going to go about games and what not. Sorry blizzard gets negative points for WoW. Though I think Lost Vikings really made up for that game.
Now since Square did infact team up with enix. I'm going to count those games too. Well, lets see what games are totally awesome. Lets first look at the enix side of this tango.
RoboTrek Illusions of Gaia Soulblazer StarOcean
And now the Square side FF6 (Or also 3 in the states as well) Crono Trigger (and crono cross respectivily) (I'm sorry if you don't think so) KindomHearts (1 and 2) Secret of Mana Secret of Evermore Xenogears (Loved that game)
Probably a lot more that I can't think of right now. Its late... I'll add more tomarrow maybe. I think that Square has made better games, but hey thats just my oppinion. The only game that I really really liked from blizzard was lost vikings. That has still some good replay value.
P.S. If your wondering why I didn't but FF7 up there is cause it wasn't as good of a game as 6 was. Sorry, but seph isn't a good badguy. Sure he looks bad ass, but go ahead and play the game again. He just isn't that great.
Siehst du mich Erkennst du mich Ganz tief in meinem Herz ist noch ein Platz f?r dich Ich suche dich Ich sehne mich nach dem was ich geliebt hab doch ich find es nicht
It really depends what you're looking for. Overall I'd have to go with Square, simply because Final Fantasy VII is probably the one game that I've ever played that influenced me the most. VII is definitely my favorite game of all time.
When looking at what each developer brings to the table, first you have to realize that Blizzard is primarily a PC develper and Square(Enix) is primarily a console developer. I believe the Final Fantasy series to be the best RPG series currently available in North America. Therefore, I hold all Square games, especially Final Fantasy games, in high regard. Perhaps the only other game that comes close to comparing to Final Fantasy would have to be Metal Gear Solid.
Blizzard, on the other hand, makes primarily PC games with an RTS and hack-n-slash focus (Lets ignore the MMORPGs of each company for the moment). While Starcraft and Warcraft III are both very entertaining RTS games, they are close to being, but not quite, the best RTS's available. I personally prefer the Command and Conquer series. And with respect to future releases, I am looking forward to Supreme Commander more than Starcraft 2. Diablo's hack-n-slash formula is addicting, but in terms of having fun it isn't really that great of a game.
Breifly acknowledging the two companies MMORPG's, I believe FFXI to win out slightly over WoW, thus leading me to choose Square again here. I simply prefer the grouping dynamics and general feel of FFXI to WoW, and Square's game has a more compelling setting, I believe, than Blizzards does.
Basically when it came down to it, I simply asked myself: which company would I be willing to be without? I believe that the FF series is unparalleled with respect to single player RPG's. However, There are many other games that can just as easily take the place of the top Blizzard games (I mentioned Command and Conquer). Therefore, if I could have one but not the other, Square would definitely win out.
Now please, before you get all fired up, ready to counter my post with a pro-Blizzard and anti-Square reply, remember: This entire thread is based on opinion. I am not saying that Square is a better company than Blizzard. I am merely giving my opinion, that being that I prefer Square. I completely understand that other people would choose Blizzard first. With that in mind, give your opinion, but don't hate me for giving mine.
Originally posted by moptopRPG Ok I have a major Question to throw out to all gamers. Which is a better software company Blizzard or Square? So here is the question again, which is beter BLIZZARD or SQUARE; choose wisely. I would like to see what all of you think.
ok, in all fairness, do you mean blizzard (to include blizzard north, none of whom are still at blizzard) or do you mean blizzard (with pardo and kaplan, the reasons blizzard north quit) ? because those two groups are WORLDS apart.

I never actually managed to finished any FF tirle, and it is really strange too as i like the gameplay, i like the characters, i like the story, i find them to be extremely well made games, but still i never could spend with any of them the amount of time needed to actually finish the games.
Blizzard on the other hand knows how to make games that just hooked me, maybe a bit shallower, with no great characters, or great storyline, i also believe that warcraft III took this kind of games a step further from the previous ones, sure maybe the player speed interaction may have been taken to extremes from the really skillfull sometimes, something that did hurt the pure strategy part of the game, but it also unlocked this kind of games from the extremely simple "he who has most allways wins" startegy all others had.
All in all i feel like Square should be my choise but in reality it allways was Blizzard games that had this undefined "magic" which made you fall in love with them, at least that is how it allways was for me.
Same with WoW, by no means the greatest mmorpg creted but still it did bring a revolution and of course an evolution to the genre.

Its not just about WoW. Its about the company as a whole. Like I said the only games from blizzard I truely loved and still do love is the Lost Vikings games. Though from the gaming standpoint of Square + enix games. I enjoyed those way more and have more favorites from them. (Illusions of Gaia by far is the best game ever BTW) Though not for the reason of just the FF games. Cause in all honesty most of them were crap. FF4 and FF6 are worth mentioning as great games. FF7 was so androgonist that you never knew anything at all not even about the characters. Only 2 characters (On your side) were recluesive and that was Cloud and Vincent. You don't know anything about your other party members. Sephiroth, is lames in terms of the villan. He looks cool and acts evil... Thats his whole appeal. You know nothing about bearly see anything of him until you fight him. Sure he shows up once to throw Jenova's arm at you and you fight it. Which BTW... What the hell was Jenova and what real roll did she play? We will never know in the actual game. Don't get me started with FFX if anyone actually liked that game that isn't a girl... You have some issues. Really it should of been called Bishi Fantasy X. Yah for Tidus and Auron Yaoi.
So you can't go and messure a company by what it is doing right now you also have to look into the past and see what it did do, and now the future for what it will do. World of Warcraft isn't Blizzard's crowning accevement. Its just one of the many games that will and is going to sell a lot of copies just cause it has 1 of 2 things. 1) Has the blizzard logo. 2) Has either Warcraft, Starcraft, or Diablo in the title.
Siehst du mich Erkennst du mich Ganz tief in meinem Herz ist noch ein Platz f?r dich Ich suche dich Ich sehne mich nach dem was ich geliebt hab doch ich find es nicht

take away all the blizzard north contributions since well, the idiot team of pardo and kaplan ran them off... so that leaves you with a lot LESS goodness coming from blizzard.

its hard to say cause most of the companies games that they have developed are not in direct competition with each other excluding wow and ffxi. ive enjoyed both company's games at the same time. in terms of mmorpg i enjoy wow much better that ffxi, but overall liked more squareenix games than blizzards.
Undertand this first, I never liked any Final Fanstasy, from I to XII but I know that these are of all games of quality. So I was going to vote SQUARE, even though I love World Of Warcraft But then I remember than BLizz made Orginal Wacraft ( I- 3) and also Starcraft and Diablo
WOW! I Started this post just wondering what a couple people would say and it turned into a pretty big post. That is really cool of you all I am liking the input. This goes to show that mmorpg.com has a strong fan base and a whole lot of forum goers.
I voted Blizzard, on the basis of their Diablo franchise. I am old enough to remember the original coming out and there was NOTHING like it available at the time. Random dungeons kept me playing and playing and playing and playin etc etc........
Now I never got into the whole final fantacy thing because I had already played the greatest sets of single player rpgs there were (or ever will be it seems) before I got into ff. I mean its hard to be happy with the liniar world (although good story) off ff when I have just pimped out my wife I was forced to mary at gunpoint at new reno all the while staring in porn to feeb my adiction to jet.
Lets face it after Fallout 2 all other rpgs kind of looked stale. It was also at this time that Baldurs Gate series and planescape torment were released, both better games than any in the ff franchise.
I guess in sumation I chose Blizzard becasue it has a franchise that I have never seen bettered in the Diablo games(countless thousands still play these games!), where square's genre of games have been done by other companys and done a great deal better.
With out a doubt Blizzard. I've never been a big fan of FF and the warcraft and starcraft games were my favorite so its an easy choice Here is the main reason though
My favorite single player games are RTS's not RPG's So there you go MMO's its diffrent but I don't think FF online beats WoW and I own them both but thats just IMO
I will say playing the original FF on my Nintendo is one of my most memorable experiences in game playing but also is playing the Warcraft trial from a PC Gamer CD and going out 1st thing the next day to pick up a copy of the game. Two great companies i just think WOW has offered the North American market a little more than Square.
I have to go with Sqaure.. I didnt have a computer until 2000ish.. but ive been playing my console games since 1986 or just after. And I cant say that Diablo or other blizzard games are better than FF 1,2,3 , Secret of Mana, and some of the other games that were just awesome for their time. Square has many classics... but I will say WoW is better than FF XI. the games for the most part are hard to compare because they are so different however.
I like the FF game's but the Warcraft 3, starcraft, and D2 kept me entertained longer. Especially WC:3 with the amount of extra custom made maps people would make. Plus I like the idea of real time combat instead of turn based.
