In the thought there are no good or bad MMO's ? I have played mmos for years now , And one thing that rings in my head is the thought , I have been playing the same game for years . What real difference does a skin make ? When we have been seeing the same formula rehashed time after time , When is enough , enough ?

I hear lots of people criticize games on breaking The  MMO, RPG mold ( SWG comes to mind )(almost 3 year vet ) What aspect has been changed in essence of an MMO , RPG ? If anything it is more so of the same rehashed crap we have been seeing since UO . Age of conan Shows some promise , But what can we know of something we haven't experienced ?

IMO something has to change, Some developer has to take on the task of trully changing , What we expect in an MMO . Graphics and in some cases physics have changed , But gameplay has not .

I think its time we stop categorizing MMO's as SKill /level based , And move to Modern/Subpar .

No mate I with you even though I haven't been playing them for years but I think the majority of those that have played them for awhile feel the same way

There are a few games which are offering stuff that are new, unfortunetly those that do never seem to have millions of dollars funding them. I'm sure you'll find a few games that offer different and interesting gameplay though there may be other sacrafices but that doesn't seem as though it'll bother you.

I'm sure if you check around here(this site) you'll find a thing or two that your probably interested in because of a differing style of gameplay

I'd rather categorize them as qualified / subpar, good / poor, mindless playtime / engaging game, or some such than modern / subpar. Modern doesn't imply quality to me.

Done with the nitpickery, and I agree. There are plenty of people who hope for something better to come along. I consider it certain, and am waiting, not hoping. For a good, engaging MMORPG.

    The future: Adellion
Common flaw in MMORPGs: The ability to die casually
Advantages of Adellion: Dynamic world (affected by its inhabitants)
Player-driven world (beasts won't be an endless supply of mighty swords, gold will come from mines, not dragonly dens)
Player-driven world (Leadership is the privilege of a player, not an npc)

No, there are some very, very bad MMOs out there.  I almost have to ask, besides SWG, which MOs have you played?

Let's face it, there's only so much any games developer can do to really 'break the mold' and create something new, immersive and entralling. I guess it comes down to back story.... WoW trumped the competition because so many people had played and enjoyed the warcraft series already. LOTR looks like it may be able to create a similar kind of buzz and certainly Warhammer Online will be massive as well. But, will they be different? Probably not. Perhaps something like Tabular Rasa might be an option - at least it seems that the developers are trying to avoid the common pitfalls that seem to beset all MMOs... so 'good' or 'bad' are simply judgements based largely around whether or not the setting and backstory of a particular games appeals.

I agree with your first sentence and essentially nothing after that. Well, to some extent I guess its possible to objectively lack features or functionality. What people usually end up talking about when an MMO is bad or good is a lot of abstract philosophy about some game play element that subjectively relative anyway, which renders the whole argument down to an opinion whose basis is: "me no likey".

I don't like the lack/presence of gameplay element X. I mean hell, thats fine with me. This is a discussion forum and it only practically exists to transmit opinions back and forth. Instead, people usually try to talk like they somehow created a system them allows them to come up with perfect, objective truth in regard to MMO's.

What people seem to fail to realize also is that even though there may be millions of people who have been in the market for years, there are also lots of people entering into it. At least according to mmogchart.com and a couple of news stories.

My point? The sort of gameplay elements (like, level progression) that the people who started with Ultima and Everquest is just as engaging to someone who first starts playing MMO's today as it was to them however many years ago.
