Hi All,

Anyone remember Gemstone III the MUD that was around 10 years ago. I played it regulary back then and was shocked when I saw Simutronics was making a grapical MMO! If you know what I'm talking about anyone remember Thalior or Jesh or Blades?

Um... yea.  The game is still going fairly strong with peak numbers hitting around 800 on a normal day.

You might want to check out GemStone IV, it's still going strong and a lot of our offsite GM's come from the GS or DragonRealms worlds.

hehe I played GSIII back in the day and only recently decided to play a bit of GSIV (which most would agree is a definate improvement of GSIII - yet still the 'same game')

Gemstone was my first online game and for that I both thank them for introducing me (in such a wonderful way) to online gaming, as well as curse them for introducing me into the oh-so-addicting world of online gaming. :p

Here's who I remember from the old guard. I didn't come about until GS moved to AOL.

    Thalior

    Jesh

    Blades

    Bleeds

    Kali

    Cerulean

When these gents and ladies came in the room well, I was in AWE. And many, many, many more that I've forgotten. Then there were newer, well roleplayed characters like:

well, me, but I'll remain namless ( ha ha)

    Silvean

    Lylia

    Prestius

    Lissa

    Bestatte

Then, back after the move to AOL and it became flat rate, the first of the power players came in. I'll never forget Greesnake (I think that was her name). She and others like her were WAY ahead of their time. I'll be these days there's far less of that.

And there are so many many more names that I've forgoten. I'd be back there now, I've tried. Just too much reading for my fatigued eyes.

GS and DR are still going strong. I can't recommend them highly enough, even if I don't play any more.

Hey, Simu, release 750 and I promise I'll come back.......... I miss my black rapture cloak. Maybe Silvean does too.

I am tempted to try gemstone, but the chance of addiction scares me to death which is probably around the 85-90% mark. I only every played Dragonrealms what are the major differencesbetween the two.

hehe should I do it... (I'm thinking I should)

Greensnake? Only power-player I remember green was "GreenTide" who either went demonic or just rerolled as "Blueland" then disappeared when the family fame went buh bye. Tsin is now #1 top dog on the fame lists, and Tarakan is still very much up there (3 billion fame doesn't just go away)

750 (major demonic summoning) would be really cool. 730 (Animate dead) is pretty cool as it is, could last a bit longer though - whole lotta work (about a day to get your moonflowers, troll blood and sea water - but if you do a lot at once, it can be worth it) for maybe 30-50 minutes with your animate...

I just recently reopened my accounts (again for the 900th time) and am really enjoying being a locksmith with my rogue. I'm gaining too much XP tho, can't keep up with my lockpick mastery ranks (rogue guild skill). I get about 6-7 new rank slots a level and I can only get 3-4 ranks per level... lol...

My sorcerer just animated a hooded figure last night for grins and giggles and got to witness this beautiful sight:

An animated hood figure swings a figure leg at a hooded figure.

My animated figure beating his buddy to death with its own leg... in what other game do you get to see something like that? Buddy of mine blew the arm off of some noob who was angering him, picked it up, and wouldn't give it back to him (after the arm was done knocking it's previous owner to the ground for 10 minutes)... Poor noobie sitting there, trying to convince my buddy to give him back his arm and tell him how to sew it back on.

They are both excellent games. Of the two, I think DragonRealms comes out on top as the ever so slightly better game in regard to overall play experience. I'm drawn to try it out again even now. But my heart is with Gemstone. GS is slightly more numbers-oriented, a bit simpler to dive into and experience right off the bat, and has a more tangible leveling process. It's easier to feel like you're leveling up when you're leveling up. And that in itself can be a very satisfying experience.

Still, there's no doubt in my mind that DR is the more refined product. For people that really enjoy RP, I say go with DR. For those that love RP, but like to see those numbers on the screen when they cast a spell or swing a blade, then go with GS.

    Just my 2 cents.

You're right, it was Greentide and he was a male player. It's funny how the memory plays tricks on you! I didn't know he'd re-rolled as another character. I think maybe at one point there were rumors that Greentide was sold to another player. Heck, there were lots of rumors that legendary characters were sold, particularly of the uber-legend sort (of which Greentide certainly was not). I'd mention a name or two but even to this day it would bother me to impugn the character of one of those imaginary characters, particularly when I don't know that I'm right about any of them.

I could never play a rogue, just never had the "yen," but I sure did appreciate them ... even more so when one of my boxes killed one.

I think one of the first things to turn me off to GS was the nerfing of death. One of my fondest memories EVER was when Thalior would come in and rescue me and another character from the Spider Temple. We knew we'd never get back in to get our stuff. When you began to decay with your stuff, that was the beginning of the end for me (although I continued to play for quite some time).

Nothing bonded younger characters with older characters like corpse rescues.

I can't tell you how many times I was webbed by Thalior, Bleeds, Jesh, etc. Or how scared I was. I could reminisce about the game for days. But, I'm rambling.

I do love what they did with Limb Burst/Break Limb.

    Hey Seiv!

You may recall my old warrior Typhus from years ago.  I think your original rogue and he used to adventure a fair bit back in the day, along with all the others that were part of that generation.

As others have noted, Gemstone IV and DragonRealms are still going strong at play.net.  I'm not especially active in either game any more, but I keep nosing around on the forums and still have active accounts with both.
