No one can really tell you whether or not its worth it cause it all depends on your personal Point of view. There are lots of people I know that at first didnt like it so much but once they reached the later lvls they got absolutely hooked but i also know people who thought they would absolutely love this game but when they tried it out they werent particularly fond of it.

    ------------------------
    - FFXI is quite a time-consuming game, so if you have a really busy life and dont have much free time you probably wont get very far in this game very fast.

    - The community in FFXI is one of the best out of all MMO's but that because its based around grouping together in order to lvl, there isnt much of a soloing choice in this game, only a few jobs can get far with soloing. Also since it has such a good community its quite easy to find someone to help you if you need it.

    - It's not extremely exciting at the beginning. The game isnt really fun in the first few lvls, but if you make it to the higher up lvls I can guarantee you will love it. Most of the people who say this game sucks havent made it passed the first 10 lvls (which are the worst) so they havent experienced the game.

    - Everyone plays on the same servers. There are no seperate servers for Japanese or European players, some people say this is a bad thing because of the different languages, but IMO its a nice thing to have cause you get to play with people from all over the world, which should be the reason you play MMO's, not just to play with people in your continent. the Japanese to English language gap isnt that much of a problem cause alot of the Japanese players know how to speak English and those who don't know English there is an easy to use Translator Function so its easy to communicate when in parties.

    - You can change jobs without have to make a new character. No one can deny that this is a nice feature, cause you can go from being a Warrior to a White Mage while still staying on the same character and not haveing to change to an Alt.

    - Lots of end game content. FFXI has alot of End game content, like Dynamis, Limbus and Assault, so even once you reach lvl 75 (the max level) you wont get bored.

    - PvP is alright. The PvP in FFXI isnt the general battlegrounds PvP, cause, as i stated before, its based around community. So instead of the random killing of people while they're leveling or somthing. SE has made PvP into a game format. Ballista and Brenner are currently the only 2 forms of PvP but there is more coming with the July Update.

    - Awesome PvE. What FFXI lacks in PvP it makes up for in PvE. With the new expansion (Treasures of Aht Urghan) FFXI has gained alot of great PvE content Assault and Beseiged being the main 2. So even if it does not have a very good PvP system it has awesome PvE.

    - Tons of quests/missions to complete. There are tons of quests and mission to do in this game so you dont have to constantly level.

    - Choose your own craft. In FFXI you can choose what Craft you want to level to make gil off of, There is Alchemy (woot ^^d), Bonecraft, Cooking, Woodworking, Blacksmithing, Goldsmithing, Leathercraft, Clothcraft and Fishing. So you really wont get bored and if you would like you can level all of them up, you don't only have to choose one. ^^

    - Gil (Currency) can be a problem, unless you know how to get it. There are ALOT of ways to get money in FFXI, but alot of people complain about how hard it is to get money. If you farm, Camp Notorious Monsters (There are alot of NM's that drop really good items that sell for tons of money), or do quests. The way I see it, if your lazy your gonna be poor, but if you actually try to make some money, you can be rich in no time.
    ------------------------

I know there is alot of points I missed, but I hope I covered enough for you to see if you may or may not like it. I have played this game since release and I love it. But again, it really depends on how much free toime you have and what you are looking for in MMO's. ^^v

    Hope I helped! =D <3

The game requires quite a bit of dedication and commitment, I'll tell you that. Especially when you're partying with other players, which is a HUGE part of the game. That's good because you get a great sense of player interaction and communication. It's bad, though, because you'll find yourself waiting for other classes.... a lot... especially white mages... and paladins.

But you should be able to play by yourself for the first 10 levels... which should be enough time to get a feel for the game and to gather enough information from other players to know the linguo.

But yeah... FFXI has its ups and downs, its rushes and its slooooow play...

Although it does seem to be getting more interesting with the new expansion. And the new chocobo raising feature, which helps because travel time in the game is a bit harsh.

So yeah, I agree with T-O-H-M-A in that the game requires a LOT of time. But what good MMORPG doesn't? I say the more time you put into a game, the more fun it'll end up being. It's like raising a kid!

...But I wouldn't know about that quite yet.

    Ninjas??

Hm... I can see how... Kinda...

Dang... that's an uber expensive class...

I can forsee a lot of bribing involved when trying to convince a ninja to join the party.

    LOL.... So True. So True.

Truth is, Paladin, Ninja or straight War/Monk can tank. Monk/War is even a good back-up tank combo in a pinch.
People get so caught up in "OMG WE NEED A NINJA" - or whatever the FOTM is, that they actually waste more time waiting for a group to get started than is necessary. They're actually like, paralyzed, 'til that key spot is filled.

    god that is so true...

i would wait in parties all friggin' day, listening to the party leader complain about "there's no ninja's lfg... we can't start yet! yadda yadda yadda!" then i would go search for names and find like... 5 perfectly good warriors looking for parties.

argh, it's so frustrating. made me want to level in ninja just to help the balance, but i don't have that kind of money... plus, i'm too dedicated to thief right now.

Why do parties want Ninja's so badly?

Because they are ultra skilled ninjas

Because they are, oddly, regarded as the best tanks. Ninjas get a spell called Utsusemi that generates three or four "shadows"--whenever the mob tries to do *anything* to the ninja while he's got shadows up, one of the shadows takes the hit (and disappears), leaving the ninja untouched. A ninja tank has lousy DEF and HP, but he uses Utsusemi to avoid being hit at all. It's got its limits--in particular, the ninja will have trouble casting Utsusemi fast enough to replace his shadows as fast as they go down (at lower levels it's not even remotely possible to do this)--but blink tankers like to say, "No damage beats damage".
