He's not, he states he played the game pre-nge too
I think what pisses veterans off most about the NGE (and rightfully so) is the feeling that SOE totally abandoned their core subscirption base of 2 years by completely changing the game twice within less than a year....all in order to hopefully get a fresh start in the market. Regardless of whether or not you think the NGE is better or worse than the original SWG (and everyone is entitled to their opinions), you can't argue with the fact that what they did to their long time customers was completely wrong.

if not for the jedi, SWG would (i think) still be around without the need for the nge.... i really didnt want to be a jedi, but the 2 friends that did get the privelege talking about how much fun it was..... felt like a kick in the nuts that though we paid the same price, they got extra content that many others didnt...
I've played SWG on and off since Beta and steadily since June '04 until August '05 then on and off until November, '05. I've even tinkered around in post-NGE on a friend's account (which is how I know I don't particularly enjoy it).
For anyone who doesn't mind a linear level-based progression system SWG is still a very good game. For me that kills the game for me because I don't like linear progression games. I prefer a game where I can decide what skills my character will get. I LOVED the skill system in SWG. It was the whole reason I bought the game. I also loved player cities (still do)... And I still miss many features of the game that are still in it and not in anything else.
But the linear progression just frustrates me. I don't WANT to be "just a bounty hunter" or "Just a smuggler" I loved my BH/Commando/Medic and many other permutations I tried just to tinker with skill combinations. Now I can't do that. I will forever be "just another <insert class>" with identical abilities and even identical stats. There is no variation now, other than cosmetic. And that is just sad.
But for someone who doesn't mind that the game is fine. You can still be one of 9 (used to be 32 mind you) professions and have fun in the Star Wars universe. If that's ok to you then the game is still pretty much 'as it always was'. And if you like the linear progression better than the skill based progression then you may even like it BETTER because they've added what SWG needed all along: Storyline Missions that actually involve you in the game.
My stance is, and always has been, this: What they did with NGE wasn't totally bad. I LOVE the new quests they've added. They are fun, engaging and draw you into the star wars feel of the game. They really do. Unfortunately in doing so they also ripped out the aspects of the game that I already loved: Crafting was decimated by the adding of loot drops that are far superior to crafted equipment. Skill based system was gutted and replaced by a linear progression system. And some professions vanished altogether..
So while NGE did 1 good thing it ripped out 3 features I actually bought the game for originally. SWG isn't BAD now... it just isn't my cup of tea.
If the OP is enjoying it? It just means he doesn't mind, or even enjoys, a class/level linear progression more than a skill based progression system. I'm sure a lot of people do. But I probably won't ever come back to SWG... I bought it for certain features that are no longer in the game. Now it's a shadow of it's former self. Certainly with much needed features added... but with all the core features I loved about it either crippled or removed entirely.

I had played pre NGE SWG for a long time and absolutely loved it. However I quit before the NGE hit us (WoW).
I have so many fond memories of wondering around the planets looking for rare creatures to tame and then bumping into new players out exploring and getting very lost. Giving them advice, helping them out with gear and credits maybe and generally getting to know them and watching their skills develop. I was a Master Creature Handler/Master Rifleman at the time and loved going out with these people on a hunt for specific items to sell to a Bio Engineer and making a pretty packet. We would all sit around a camp fire in the middle of nowhere chatting away with our pets out guarding us. It was great! I even got a good business going and had my own guild hall which I converted into a zoo. Kept it stocked up with BE'd pets and let the customers choose their own which I would then tame for them. Some good money here.
I enjoyed this aspect of the game so much but was also envious of all those player run shops so I got myself a 2nd account and grinded Master Architect (4 hoursr lol) and started my own business. Placed my vendor in a really popular Mall and again saw the money flood in. It was great getting to know people and making regular customers and had some fantastic RP moments in the process. Ahh the memories.
Im sure I would have still been there if it wasnt for WoW.
Now all this is gone. Most SWG vets know that MCH was one of the longest grinds in the game and they just go and take it away from us. Cheeky sods!
However I can only reserve judgement on the NGE as I havent played it and have been put off. From what most people say the servers are empty (Chimaera Europe). I really dont think I could play a game like this without hardly anyone being around.
That said, I have the itch to go and take a look on the 10 day trial they have going. Hmm.

Since when have you been the expert on Chilastra? From everything I've read from you, you've never played on it.
Despite my recent "naysaying" of the SWG experience, I have re-upped my subscription and have attempted to play the good sceptic and see for myself.
And this is what I found, the good, and the bad.
The "good"
1) the "twitch" factor is kinda-sorta there, its much better than the "target/spambestattack" that the Devs came up with originally. Admittedly, this is much better than before.
2) The intro/new player quest thingy (Ala WoW) is a great improvement over the "createcharthendumpin Eisley" route they had for awhile. The quests give good cash, and lower-lvl weaps that are almost impossible to find on the bazaars or player vendors.
3) they didnt screw with JTL.
4) the "House Packing" feature is a VERY good idea.
5) no more 10min waits at shuttles.
The "bad"
1) Ok this is freeking UNFORGIVABLE.......Bugs from day one still in game. No matter what you say about WoW, for the most part, it launched with very few bugs, and those get taken care of quickly and efficiently. It is STUPID for SWG Devs to spend time making expansions when there are bugs, play-breaking bugs, that never get addressed. Tards.
2) I play for RP purposes and game immersion, and to have a whole profession that cannot even equip a weapon has got to be the stupidest idea ever. No matter that they cannot be attacked unless they attack first.....Traders/crafters seem to be getting phased out due to the fact that drops are becoming better than anything player-made. Before when asked by friends, I would say that SWG was THE BEST CRAFTING GAME PERIOD....HANDS DOWN. But not anymore.
3) Dumbed down game....this is not an inaccurate assessment.
4) level treadmill instead of skill-based.....another cheap attempt to rip-off WoW. Gee, that took alot of thought */rolls eyes*
Thats all I can think of offhand.
In all, I'd have to say they screwed 2 of the best aspects of the game (crafting and skill-based progression) and added some well-needed content.
I would have rated SWG about a 3 last week, I'd give it about a 4.5 today.
I have never played either SWG versions, but it seems to me one of the big things is that they switched between radically different systems. Further there has been a bit of feud (to some degree) between skill-based advancement players games and level-based advancement games since UO/EQ and even before going back to MUD's.
So not only did the do a vast overhaul and mess with alot of players they switched from to a paradigm that many players had been trying to find a refuge from.
In my opinion its kinda like asking an American if soccer is better than football and then asking a European if football is better than soccer (yes I know football is soccer in England.). Or more to the point changing American football into English football(soccer) because soccer is the most popular sport in the world.
Not only would you have alot of pissed fans, but as an American who likes watching soccer I can tell you that alot of Americans genuinely think soccer is a boring game to watch.
I guess some people's idea of Star Wars action is eating a burrito while spamming the combat queue, then sitting back and watching what happens.
That really captures the Star Wars flare. I'm pretty sure if you pause the movie at just the right time you can see a little bit of burrito drivle down Palpatine's face as he cuts down 2 of the jedi in his office.
Get real people. Some of your points are valid but when it comes to combat....the old game sucked crap through a tube. At least now it is faster and more exciting. Star Wars is not suited to a combat queue system.
Originally posted by daddystabz I played on Chilastra since day one.

Yeah but countless bugs and a massive game change not once, but twice (not to mention all the lies and the fact that they didn't even let people know the NGE was coming till the last min AFTER they had paid for the add on) is what Star Wars is all about.
I'm no fan of SOE. I have a LOT of experience with them from SWG, EQ, EQ 2, EQ OA, PS, etc. and I think they are completely clueless for the most part. I am not defending the devs or their tactics. They deserve a great deal of the reputation they have earned. But let's not forget that Lucasarts has an even BIGGEr stake and hand in this mess. Most of you forget to bash them when you are so happy to bash $OE. Let's not forget about their restraints on the game and their input. It is their baby afterall.
I DO think however that some of the changes were needed and are a move in the right direction. They should add back some of the old classes when they can do them justice and give them some of the attention they deserve and they should make crafting a priority again. IMO crafters have the most right to be dissastisfied at this point. Jedi are what ruined this game. They should have never been in the game in the first place...especially in this continuity period. They have always catered to the jedi players and it is this attitude that has really made the game suffer.

From you of course. Your the one always saying how stuffed Chilly is. So I wandered around there when I jumped in to maintenence. Spent a few days, mainly the weekend, checking things out. You are right about one thing. It does have the largest population of any servers currently. I would bet money on that. But its still a sad state compared to what it was before. And if your such an authority then you would also be able to see this.

Chilastra might be busy, but I've never said it had the largest population. Chilastra is at least 5th in the list of most populated according to responses from people and from the TSR's. How can you call it "still a sad state compared to what it was before" when this was your first time checking it out?

As I said in my OP, I had played the game pre-NGE/CU, what I was saying was I wanted to play the game with a clear mind, and play as though I were a new player. Which I did, which is why I'm enjoying it so much. However, that said, I can still remember what the old game was like and how much I enjoyed it, and I can safely say I think I'm enjoying the post-NGE game more at the moment.
Hohbein, which server are you playing on? Im guessing by the union jack avatar you have its one of the Euro servers? Whats the population like on your server?

Those of you who can't read between the lines of what Smedley is trying to say:
SOE DID NOT *edit* this game up... the changes were forced upon THEM just like us players.
Furthermore - SOE is working its asses off to get its true character back into our gameplay, and give us back what they already knew we loved. He admits the new system is not what it should be, needs improvement etc. That makes it pretty damn apparent that SOE wasn't the mastermind behind this the NGE, etc.
On the other hand, can we blame a company for trying to stretch its demographic and increase revenue? Not if we have any sort of brains...welcome to the real world, and the world of business.
Smedley is right... this game wasn't appealing to the mass audiences the way it should have, and the powers that be decided to take a calculated gamble. This sort of stuff happens all the time.
I think we should try our best to support SOE in what they are trying to do... continue to **edit** (constructively) about what we'd like to see change, and learn how to handle changes that may or may not occur.
It might be better for SOE as a company to sit back and let you all think that LucasArts forced this stuff on us. Guess what, they didn't. We all sat around a table and read the same data.
Smed
Holy smokes...
The honesty today is unreal - Go SMED!
I've said this in interviews btw. I don't like trying to pass the buck. I may say stuff you disagree with, but I don't want to try to imply something that's not true. You may all believe that early on with the NGE we were just "spinning" things. We weren't.. we honestly believed (and still do) that we could make the game better and convince you all that this was the right direction.

that is a direct quote taken from the developer digest section, SWG offical forums, originally stated by Smed and reposted there by TH. He claims full responsibilty for the NGE... if you stop by there, its worth a read, just for the pure honesty to be coming from Smed was suprising to me.

No one here is saying LA forced the NGE on SOE. What is being said is that both companies worked on it together, and Smed states this (although you didn't quote that )
yes, I did. We ALL sat around.. its implied right there. And the way I read stabz post, thats exactly what hes implying, that LA is more responsible somehow. And while they may have an equal share in the planning, they don't have an equal share in the poor implementation.

I would have rated SWG about a 3 last week, I'd give it about a 4.5 today.

want your game back?
Short and Simple..
1. People that Like SWG-NGE --> Minority Class of SWG Player Database. (currently playing and more simplified game)
2. People that liked SWG in its Golden Days --> Majority Class of SWG Player Database. (that no longer play and loved the skill based aspect)
I played on Chilastra since day one.

Meh, I gave in last night and reinstalled and patched overnight. I guess its worth checking it out for myself.

Chilastra might be busy, but I've never said it had the largest population. Chilastra is at least 5th in the list of most populated according to responses from people and from the TSR's. How can you call it "still a sad state compared to what it was before" when this was your first time checking it out?
pretty sure this has been adressed before, but here ya go-
"
Smed "
that is a direct quote taken from the developer digest section, SWG offical forums, originally stated by Smed and reposted there by TH. He claims full responsibilty for the NGE... if you stop by there, its worth a read, just for the pure honesty to be coming from Smed was suprising to me.
edit: added the entire section of the thread from SW forums for context

No one here is saying LA forced the NGE on SOE. What is being said is that both companies worked on it together, and Smed states this (although you didn't quote that )
yes, I did. We ALL sat around.. its implied right there. And the way I read stabz post, thats exactly what hes implying, that LA is more responsible somehow. And while they may have an equal share in the planning, they don't have an equal share in the poor implementation.
