I also think that when the games get outdated and old people will move on. People like to play games that are new on the market and popular. We don't know when WOW will get outdated and old because everyone's view on this is different. I personally think ...most definetly another 5 years or more. I really don't know. People unsatisfied with the game still play because some people are just reluctant to quit until some other new mmorpg makes its way to the market. Reluctant because WOW is not completely as bad as you think...Yes most people complain about the end game raiding but there are other stuff that keeps unsatisfied people continue to subscribe. Perhaps some old players quit and new players subscribe for 6 monts to try it out. Old players are constantly replaced by new players and that's pretty much what Blizz cares. As long as they are getting money in their pockets this game will live. Plus Burning Crusade expansion is comming this fall which is like a new game for everyone. So Blizz just increased the shelf life of WOW on the market.

With that being said I know a good portion of the population are blizzard fanboys, fad gamers, and people bored with other mmorpgs. I have met very few people that have played and actually like wow for more than a month.
So my question is when will wow die, in your opinion....I'll even throw in a poll
Oh, and by Die I dont mean fail to exist I mean......stop being so damn big, popular, and consuming of other MMORPG's population
It's a casual game so as long as there are casual gamers looking for something new to play and don't mind paying the monthly fees for it this game will never die. So in effect if another casual type Mmorpg comes out to play and offeres more things than WoW, better graphics, better pvp and maybe more things to do than just questing, tradeskilling ect, we'll just have to wait for it.
Wow will simply die when most ppl can finally see it really is more of the same all the time ..which sadly to say is not likely and all that extremly hard to find gear keeps ppl playing since it becomes an investment in their lives and money.Plus!! there will always be new ppl entering mmo's and WoW will be there for them and it will keep on spreading in that fashion until they actually play some more games and judge in a unbiased view.So I expect it to die in a decade or so since Blizzard would probably start another mmo fad or work on other projects(hopefully SC2)

First off, let me just say that i have not read this whole thread, but i think that Takata5 has hit the nail on the head with his comments. One of the major reasons that this game is so popular is that it suits casual gamers, those that do not have 24/7 to invest in a game world, you can pop in for a couple of hours after work - after supper - before bed and run a quest or two then just log until your next session.
I loved EvE as a game, i think that it is fantastic, but the investment in time was just far too much for me to be able to get anywhere. I found that i really needed to be able to devote at least 4-6 hours per session to be able to do anything meaningful.
WoW on the other hand caters for those that just want to drop in on the fly, have a quick chat with their mates, run a quest/dungeon and then shoot off and get on with real life stuff. The only other game that captured the same atmosphere before this was EA's failed Earth & Beyond and again i agree that as soon as a new game comes along that captures the same atmosphere with more to offer, Wow will bow out.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
I'm sorry, but after playing WoW for over a year it's not my impression that it is a game for casual players. Sure, 1-60 it is and for the first few characters it's great fun.
But once you hit lvl 60 it becomes an all-out grinding/raiding/farming game with little to no room for casual gamers. Sure Blizzard pretends to add content for the non-raiders/the casuals (the Silithus quests come to mind), but it's just another farming process.
I honestly can't remember when the last 5-man-dungeon came (Dire Maul), it seems like ages though.
I know quite a lot people who quit WoW and each and everyone was a casual gamer, who didn't want to raid or simply didn't have the time that raiding requires.
Imho WoW is a nice game for casuals from 1-60, but after that it caters more to the hardcore crowd.
1. Young levlenings our high time junkies realize...OMG this isnt that awesome
2.The new genres with nice improved graphs gameplay and orginalty such as WAR..and plz no going WAR haha wow clone cuz u never played the freaking tabletop back years ago u little 10 year old anyways, that age of conan guild wars factiosn which is out and pretty darn good, vangaurd saga of heros u name it.personally i say WAr seeing as how WOW and WAr are a bit realeted since they got u know the weird old fantasy types but WAR has years of its own lore and orignalty...so no doubt its gonna be awesome espicaly EA plus mythic anyways
3.anyone else gets to lvl 60 and realizes the terrible endgame content
4. plp will realize that unlike other games this wont take your money and go to the bank and laugh and say.."man they gettin pissed OMGZ 1 mill plp are leaving!""i got it lets make a expansion every year""YEA!"while the upcoming expansion doesnt look that bad with the money they have and the very crappy 2 cents wasted on patches they coulda made a MUCH better expansion..when those 3 err 4 things happen WOW will become a dead MMORPG like lineage 2 which is somehow still kicking O_O

lol Gidd I had a orc army for Warhammer fantasy back in the 80ies.. But my creme-of-de-crop was my 60k Dark eldar army of minis for Warhammer 40k :_D each custom painted :-D Still have both in storage. WOW cannot compare, since the original warcraft RTS didnt even come out til about 10 years after the original warhammer.
Age of Conan coming out too, that may bleed off some subscribers.
WoW will never totally die, there will always be the Hardcore Raiders who will desperately cling to their epics. Why? Simple, in Azeroth they are Somebody, they have notoriety and fantastic loot. They been to places many only see screenshots of. They will not leave to just start over as a level 1 noob. This is why there are still people in EQ1, they have such a huge time investment in their characters they can't or won't abandon them.
You can always tell who these long term WoW subsribers will be, they'll be the ones that hit lvl 70 1st and take down Illidan probably within the 1st month of expansion release.
i dont think wow will die, and thankful as it keeps ceartain people there that i would not like to game with , it is also kindergarten friendly, so it keeps the more aged players where i like em.
I wished you had added the option for longer than 6 months. WoW will die in 2-3 years, then it will be 4-5 years old. I don't see any new MMO hurting WoW, there just doesn't seem to be a broad appeal MMO on the horizon. Since Blizzard will be releasing expansions every year from now on, I can't see most people leaving until that second or third expansion.
No criticism of WoW from me as I only trialed it briefly.
But if I had to speculate as to the publisher's intentions I'd say that unless they are heavily leveraged, then then they are hooked on the huge cash infusion that good advertizing can bring to a product with mass appeal. I certainly have no idea what their ledgers look like, so this really is just guessing.
It's seems likely that they will just put the old product on a limited development cycle to ride out the bell curve while repurposing their employees to developing a WoW sequel or other product and prepping for an efficient swing into mass subscription.
Blizzard is a company that sells content, much like Square Enix or other console focused corps that do cinematic games. So they'll probably roll out something for Windows Vista and 64 bit platforms that is not only quite nice to look at, but will keep players engaged for several months in a storyline.
Storylines, despite their shortcomings in relation to most game communities, are very easy to sell because they make it easy to get into a game. One thing I've learned about business, lone individuals look for a story more than they look for a particular outcome. A client will be happy provided they know things are on track and that a milestone has been reached in a court proceeding, or a medical process, or a war, or what have you, even if the outcome is unpleasant. So long as they can frame themselves in the role of the protagonist, they can rationalize absolutely anything. When they stop seeing themselves as protagonists, they start thinking along the lines of Debord and similar malcontents.
Some people who play the game are to addictied to the game and they will never leave it. I for one , i play the game and enjoy it and might dtick with it. But if it comes down to a better one i might leave. I think it will die when new mmo's start to come out the closet.
I think the number of subscribers will keep rising until 6 months after release of BC, than stay at same level for a while and than start going downhill, so WoW probably has at least another very popular year.
Well i personally feel that WoW will die in the future when thwere is a good casual game to replace it. Currently Wow has a average 2 month retention rate which is pretty low compared to some games such as eve which has a average 12 month retention rate. Having raids and stuff like that is fine in a game but if that is the main thing to do in WoW it just shows poor planning overallalll. Also the graphics were pretty dated from day one when i looked at them about a month after it was released in the shops the textured were pretty awfull.
Also the scenery is very....sickening, look at the poor orks starting area its full of cute pigs bright colours etc it just dont feels like an orcs home to me. Now we go to the forums for WoW the mmorpg forums i mean. Its full of complaints most of the time people slagging the game off people complaining about some bug. Meanwhile go to one of the games in the top ratings and you see very few of these types of post if any, This really creates a bad impression to me after all if the players of WoW hate it enough to complain about it here what will the game be like for me.
Now i know you tend to get some people from other better games slagging off wow in the mmorpg forums but in the end too often i see other people who are WoW players agreeing with him most of the time. As for the OP's topic this game wont last forever just wait for the next Big mmo to come out thqat does offer what wow does but does it better.
I dont' think one single game will bring WoW down like many like to say. I think its doom is drawing near meaning Blizzard will actually notice that accounts are being canceled, and that the amount of accounts created won't be able to make up for the amount canceled. Look for Vanguard, LotRO, Conan, and WAR to each take away their share of members away from WoW, as well as the other MMO's out right now, and quite a few new people will get drawn to these games as well.

Hmm... Why do sayings like "The bigger they are, the harder they fall" and "What goes up, must come down" come to mind?
