When you first start out its kind of hard to get used to , The game init self is great fun still after 6 years of playing. ALOT of players will be more than happy to help you out , if your looking for great graphics , UO currently has outdated graphics , though they have a 3d that is better than 2d version , you pick which one you want to play.Just a heads up on 8th edition , it doesnt have the latest expansion unlocked , Mondains Legacy is the latest.
They have a 14 day trial period if want to test it first:
Ultima Online was my first mmo ever and I started playing it back in 1998. It was addictive as hell and I had never witnessed any mmo before, so it was a whole new thing to me. I was in the Navy at the time and played it on an old 266m Mhz laptop computer and when in port, I would connect with a dial up connection from out ship's office and play WAY too late. Heh. I remember several days I had to work on like 1 hour of sleep after playing UO the previous night from the ships clerical office until about 4am or so. Heh, Heh. Those were the days.
Ultima Online has changed a LOT since those days when I was so hooked. Today, it looks outmatched by all the superior graphical games out there. It is still a very deep game, and lets you make your character anything you want with TOTAL control over all the 40+ skills available. Wanna be a warrior/mage? No problem. Wanna be a blacksmith/carpenter/alchemist combo and sit in town and listen to all the warriors stories and sell them the goods they need? Not a problem! It is still one of the deepest games out there, and very easy to learn.
Before you pay $19 for 8th age, however... I would highly recommend that you try it out for FREE. You can try Ultima Online Gold which also has all the same expansions included right here for 15 days at no charge!
Oh yes, you'll have a choice of a 2D or 3D client. Do yourself a HUGE favor and choose the 2D version. The 2D version's graphics are colorful and easy on the eyes. The 3D version is dark, muddy, and a big mess compared to the colorful, clear, 2D client.
I'm not sure I'd recommend UO to the WoW-graduate. It's a great game, but very dated. The community is settled, and there really isn't a lot of room for newbies.
There's an enormous amount of depth in the game, however. If you can get past the graphics, and are a self-starter (or a good social player who can find a sponsor) you will find a game with one of the deepest, oldest, most-discussed MMO game mechanics system on the market.
This is an OOOOOOLLLLD school game. It was actually my first MMORPG 6 years ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. A lot. Especially with friends...
The very fact that the game is lasting this long and still thriving says a lot about its quality and sturdiness. To me, it's a classic and I'd definitely get into it again. Screw those new-age games. Stick to the classics, man.
If you want to play UO, play it for free. The official game has been completely taken over by the giant EA games corporation, turned inside out and destroyed. They have not even kept the game updated.
