I'm in a calderi merlin doing level 1 missions in .8 space out of sobaseki vii.
I'm only pulling around 20k a mission plus bounty and loot. These missions have 0 difficulty, my shields almost never go below 90% let alone anything else.
Is there somewhere I could be doing slightly better? Any suggestions?

Heh, if you shields don't go below 90% during missions, you're doing just fine. but...
Sigh, thus is the "grind" of the mission runners. LvL 1 and LvL 2 missions tend to be a little tedious. If you remain in a frigate lvl 2 missions are a bit more difficult. If you are uninterested in the rewards of doing agent missions you can run the asteroid belts in .5 and .4 system (and perhaps the odd pirate ).
But, if you want to reap the awards of running agent missions (most notably faction loot and ships). You'll have to train the "Connections" skill to at least lvl 4 and get at it until you get enough standings to do a lvl 3. Lvl 3 missions can be tough for a BC and sometimes even a Battleship.
There are rewards for preserverance, but it takes awhile. PvE is not EVE's strong point.
Missions will increase and you should check your cans. As a rule in a 16 run between storyline missions I get at least one good loot worth 400K or more. There is always a cash injection somewhere along the line.
Go for level 2 agents, run through the belts of a 0.4 system, or do lvl 1-3 complexes. Be aware though that, as was already said, PvE in EVE is a means to reach your goals (ie make cash), not a goal by itself.

I have a q 18 agent (q 21 with skills I believe) and she is level 1. The min pay out with the bonus and no loot is about 100k. Now and again (eg. worlds collide) you'll get about 350k so level 1 agents arn't terrible (although level 2 agent missions have payed me 1 mil )
SOE knows what you like... You don't!
And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!
Too many players go to cruiser early and then have to train medium weapons while still working on their tanking skills. I've gone to help a lot of people with missions and only seen 1 cruiser that could tank as well as the Thrasher. I'm sure more experienced pilots can do better in them than those in my noob corp, my point is just that it's not a good idea to rush it. Stick to the small weapon ships for a while, frigates and destroyers, while building the armour or shield tanking skills for the bigger ship you have your eye on. Push your limit with that smaller ship, it's less expenisve to learn how far you can take your tank if something goes wrong, don't just coast through the L1 missions, try some L2s or a gang in L3s.
For Thrasher, throw some grid boosting modules in the lows, preferrably PDS, a small shield booster and a pair of medium shield extenders in the mids. Only L2 missions gave me trouble with low skills were Murderer Brought to Justice and Human Cattle 3 & 5, and even those I could do in a couple runs. I'm also toying with another one with 400mm armour and a repair module but haven't seen enough combat in that rig yet to decide how effective that will be.
Once I got the engineering skills up to mostly 3 and a couple at 4, my buddy with a similar setup and I did a few L3 missions in them, including Angel Extravaganza (admittedly pre-patch and not the bonus room because we didn't know about it yet).
Even after getting my Cyclone (skipping cruisers for combat purposes since my shield tank skills are so much better than my armour) I still take the Thrasher out every day or 2 while trying to cash in my L1/L2 agents (85% of my offers post-patch are for starbase charters? WTF?) Currently I get 2886 shield HP with tech II gear and I don't have any non-learning skills to 5 yet.
Destroyers aren't just for PvP frigate killing anymore
