Poll - Good or bad being bought by EA

I know that there has been already a discussion of this and a poll similar. But I want to make a simple poll. See what people thought of it and how it will effect WAR

I would have to say a very bad thing for EA buying Mythic as everyone knows how they butcher MMO's. I read somewhere that EA Mythic will be their MMO division of the company so there might be a very small chance other MMO's like UO being moved to this division of the company...

    Never Know..

When they start focusing on more than one MMORPG thats really when games become watered down. EA will be like those other compnaies with mutiple MMO games which at most or average or worse and games will all become watered down. WAR will get less focus than what it should get or would of gotten and basically be watered down. Mutiple MMOs from a company just isn't really good for any game so if Mythic does start working on more than one MMO i fear for WAR.

With EA I do see Mythic working on mutiple MMOs persoanlly. It turn i see games becoming less and less lacking. God the more I think about EA the more i fear WAR will become watered down. I hope Mythic just focuses on WAR but its likely that EA will focrce them to focus on devlopment of other games besides WAR after WAR come out and post launch content could come more and more rarely. Like i said I hope I'm wrong.

After what those bastards did to UO, I have NO hope left for WAR. Origins was supposed to be "left alone" to do their work too. We all know how THAT turned out.

Not a big fan of EA. Let's hope they don't intervene in mythic's work. But that would be idle hope I guess...

Everyone needs to calm down and look at the facts. War, Mythic, EA and us players will benefit from this deal. I know that EA has a sad record, but this game is still being developed by Mythic, EA just provides extra funds to make it posible for War to compete with Wow.

    Sorry babe.

Mythic's days are over. Every game company they bought out have been absorbed by EA. They didn't just get "extra funds".. they got BOUGHT OUT.

Sure, we'll see WAR ship. Just don't get too attached to it.

Well it's good for Mythic in that they now have a larger bank for development and as long as EA doesnt take direct control or a good amount of it on this project and make it more uhhhh "player friendly" in other words clone WoW then I cant see a problem

    Redwood City, CA, June 20, 2006 –
Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Virginia-based Mythic Entertainment®. Upon completion of the acquisition, Mythic Entertainment will become EA Mythic, a wholly-owned studio dedicated to developing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). Mythic is recognized worldwide for revolutionizing the online gaming space with the awardwinning Dark Age of Camelot® and is currently developing Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ under license agreement with Games Workshop.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close during EA’s second quarter of fiscal 2007. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Upon completion of the acquisition, Mark Jacobs, the President, Chief Executive Officer and cofounder of Mythic, will become Vice President, General Manager of EA Mythic. Rob Denton, the Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of Mythic will assume the role of Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of EA Mythic. Mythic’s 175-person development team will remain in Fairfax, Virginia.

This is what I fear.  With Mark being stepped down.  I dont think Rob will let them do what they want.  This is just about time it is supposed to be released.  With EA track record wouldnt doubt it will have a effect on War.  First response I had was WTF $%$ &^*&^  &^*&^ *&^*&^%__+)*($#&*&(*& WHY

EA won't ruin anything.  They only mean a publisher and more money for Mythic.  It's like saying that Vivendi has any say over Blizzard, and we've seen in the last week that Blizzard was very upset that Vivendi said anything at all about their way of making games.  Vivendi is the political face for Blizzard, nothing more.  EA is jumping on the bandwagon now because they want a chunk of what they know will come out of Mythic's new game.  We all know it's going to kick ass and this is probably the smartest move EA has done in a very long time.

For once in my MMO life I actually agree with this Vanguard hater, lol.

EA is no good. . .the majority of their games out there barely even make medicore for me. . .plus with them buying out ever compnay and ruining their games is top priority on their list.  At least DAoC saw it's glory day, WAR probably won't even have his.  Sucks, this game looked not bad.

That is what i am hoping, that EA won't try to actually run Mythic but merely provide for them. But i am very worried at what could happen within the next year and so before WAR comes out. Many things could happen unfortunately. It seems to be a smart move for EA since WAR, in my opinion, could be very successful. It is all a matter of how much bs EA pulls. Here I am, hoping nothing bad happens beyond this buyout.

EA is the company that killed PvP in UO. They dont seem to like it. I wonder what kind of input they'll have about WAR...

  • othercentsothercents Member Posts: 24

I dont' think it matters either way with WAR. It could very bad for Mythic depending if they are allowed to develop new titles, but WAR should be fine.

EA, EA Sports, EA Sports Big, and Pogo.  I can't find any other "companies".  How long you think EA Mythic will last?

Like it or not, EA will own (lock, stock and barrel) W.A.R. before the end of September.  EA can and will do whatever EA wants.  this is what concerns people.

Something people aren't realizing, 2nd QRT 2007 for EA ends September 30th 2006.

    QFT.

I believe EA knows not to meddle with Mythic's development, and that they will be rewarded with a highly successful MMORPG as a result.  I do not see EA reliving their past mistakes when they so badly want a strong showing in the MMORPG genre.

Now playing Vanguard, but drooling for WAR

I really don't care. I don't. You can't have a blast without taking some risks, and if spending $65 in total is my biggest "risk" in getting some enjoyment out of a game and universe I'm falling in love with, then I say I'm in pretty damned good shape.

Honestly people, this game isn't even released yet, saying "It's gonna suck" or "It's not even going to be released" is extremely short-sighted and biased. We've all been bent over by a corporation in one way or another, but what the hell, what if you are... *gasp* wrong?

EA has a crap-tastic track record, but history can only repeat itself so much, and with GW backing this one, I have a great deal of confidence in WAR.

But, one thing I do know is, come release day, whether I'm wrong or right, I'll be playing WAR, and I won't give a DAMN about being wrong or right, because I'll be doing something I enjoy, basking in something I've waited for for ages. If only for but a day, but I will be happy.

And nobody will take that away from me, not Mythic, not EA, not any doomsayers, not a damn soul.

Well done Mythic, you built up a good company to have it knocked down by the biggest wankers ever to walk into the gaming industry. EA haven't got a clue about what gamers want, they only know what little WoW-Type kiddies want in games, and that's for everything to be in easy-mode because they're too lazy to learn how to play a game.

EA ruined the FPS world with that lazy, buggy, POS thing they call Battlefield 2. Now you're letting them into the MMO world... your name will be forever associated with the shit that is EA.

For those who are saying that this game will never be released, you're dead wrong. It'll be released early, it'll be released with so many bugs that this game will look like it's been picked up from under a rock. The updates will be a complete joke, patch after patch, joke after joke... this is going by EA's reputation, the reputation that you've sold your company to.

EA ruined BF2? That's why it still has hundreds of thousands if not a million+ players?

Face it, just because YOU don't like a game doesnt mean its ruined, many, many peopel still love to play BF2.

EA is one of the most succesful video game companies on the planet, if all they did was make bad games this wouldnt be the case, while they have made some games I would never play, they also make alot that I have enjoyed.

I never said EA ruined BF2... BF2 is just a joke, i could name all the daft features that make BF2 the pathetic game it is but i really can't be bothered. Also, i didn't say "Me me me me me me me", but if you've ever played BF2 you'll quickly find out that the game is built towards a market that will attract a lot of people, simply because it's easy and requires no skill to do anything. You may not play games for any kind of challenge, that's your choice, and it's easy to make a game directed for those kind of gamers, just like WoW.

They're successful because they know how to market a game with pretty pictures, that has piss poor gameplay... that's why i'm worried about WAR, EA couldn't give two shits about WAR they just want a piece of the pie that is the MMO world that's getting bigger and bigger, and is making Blizzards billions.

So, the reason i'm angry with Mythic is that with EA in-charge there's a very high chance that they'll demand WAR to be released ASAP reguardless of the gameplay, just as long as it appeals to little kids who can just jump on the game and "own" with little to no skill required. This will make WAR a very rushed, and very poor game that will just end up like a dead-end type game like WoW, instead of the never-ending MMO (and yes, some Mythic guy did say MMO's shouldn't have an ending) that Mythic promised.

It's really hard for me to really put my foot down on a solid side here. I for one have been guilty of Anti_EA preaching of the pass, but the fact now is that I can't really hate them to the degree that I once did.

Goods - MMOs cost money, EA has money, Mythic wants WAR to be on a big scale, that costs lots of money. The terms of the purchase are yet to be revealed, as far as I know it, EA is simply paying Mythic's bills and giving them servers so EA can reap the profits. EA and especially Mythic aren't stupid, if WAR manages to be big, I can see EA just telling Mythic to do its own thing as long as WAR turns profit for EA. The fact that it is almost universally agreed on that EA wants a piece of the MMO pie, they won't get that if they butcher WAR. Their previous record isn't good, but the fact that back then, MMOs just were not as big as they are now.

Bad - The concerns here are certainly not unfounded. Again, I too am guilty of being Anti-EA at one point. Plus it is all too easy for EA to come in and butcher the game.

I'm still going to buy WAR, or at least give it a go, perhaps I just want to play WAR more than I hate EA.

I've been reading these forums for quite a while, but untill now I havent felt any real desire to write anything.

WAR will be released the way Mythic wants it to be released. It will be glorious. EA has the money and will pump an influx in to make sure this baby is grand.

The moment the game doest realize projected expectations well then you can begin to worry.

EA has a horrible hystory of buying up talented groups of individuals then redispersing them to other projects. Mythic will no longer be MYTHIC. It will be EA. Mythic will no longer chose what titles they wish to make or how to make them. Big Brother will dictate what is good for the consumer...even if the consumer says otherwise.

EA just flat out doesnt listen to it's MMORPG playerbase. It never has and I doubt they can get their heads out of their wallets long enough to give a damn. They cater to the largest demographic.

Earth and beyond had a stable but not overly large playerbase. It wasnt losing money. It just wasnt realizing it's projected expectations...kill it. That is how EA handles MMORPG's. How good an actual game is doesnt matter, but businesess is business and a bottom line for it's investor's is.

A smaller company will fight tooth and nail to keep a good thing going. Like funcom did with Anarchy online. Dont expect that from EA. They bought mythic because Mythic can make MMORPG's. They have obvious talent. They are now the EA mmorpg's in house baby factory.

Sorry, I wont call myself a doomsayer. But I've seen EA absorb too many great game companies to aquire their staff or their liscenses then piddle that talent away on FOB like the sims. Bottom line, not longevity is the name of their game.

    1) Nothing is changing with WAR or the WAR design. The game's goals are the same goals as they were before.
    2) EA is not buying Mythic to interfere with the management or the game design of WAR.
    3) EA has never, ever said that they want to change the deal with GW (Games Workshop) and to the contrary have reaffirmed their commitment to the same deal that we made with them. They are incredibly excited about WAR especially after what they saw at E3.
    4) I know many are going to find this hard to believe but we have spent a lot of time with the key guys at EA and we find their passion for doing great games and what they think is great, dovetails nicely with our current vision. We wouldn't have done this deal if EA had said to us, we want you to turn WAR into WoW 1.5.

    THIS IS GOOD NOT BAD.
