Permadeath removed from Jedi

This week's Friday Feature discusses the upcoming Revamp of Jedi.  Here is the text from today's Friday Feature (since it takes a little bit to appear on the website):

Always in motion is the future: Changes to the Jedi System

I would like to start this post by saying thanks to everyone for the long and heartfelt conversations about this hot topic over the past few months. It is an issue that is very passionate to everyone involved. We have been reading the boards, reading email, listening to people who spoke with us and have had many discussions internally.

It has been agreed that the development team should revamp the Jedi system.

This process is going to take some time, so it will happen in several phases. The first phase is to make some changes (where possible) to alleviate some short term discomfort with gameplay. The second phase will be to rebuild the Jedi system to be quest-oriented; and to include the familiar elements of Force Sensitivity, Jedi-oriented quests, as well as many other elements the developers and the community feel should make up the process of becoming a Jedi. (It should also be noted that players who have put in work towards becoming a Jedi will not lose their effort. Some sort of recognition of players' efforts will be included in the new system.)

The first phase is for short term and those changes will appear in Publish 6. They are as follows:

  • The permadeath system is being removed and changed to a skill revocation system based on deaths.
  • Deaths will decay from the death counter after one week.
  • Deaths after a buffer (3 to 5 depending on advancement) will have a skill revocation penalty.
  • Skill revocation will be slight at first, but will increase in penalty as the player accumulates more and more non-decayed deaths.
  • The skill revocation penalty will increase as a player advances up the skill tree.
  • The skill to be revoked will be randomly chosen from the last skill earned in each of the 4 skill branches.
  • No more than one skill will be revoked at a time, though players can get to a state where they lose a skill each time they die.

This is all of the information that is available at this time. As additional developments occur, we will post more information.

Feel free to give your constructive feedback on the Publish 6 Jedi changes here. In the next couple weeks, we'll open threads in the In Concept Forum to get your feedback on the future potential changes. May the Force be with you! :obiwan:

Seems as if a very large number of ppl are not happy with this, as you might imagine.  SOE has a good game here but doesnt seem to know what to do with it.

    Let me sum it up...

    SOE - HAD - DOESN'T KNOW...

hehe, what Djin is saying is sorta like this:

SOE had their hands on one of the best mmorpg ideas that had ever swept the mmorpg era.  They had gotten the license from Lucasarts to head this project.  SWG could have been, hands down, simply the best mmorpg out there, sweeping any potential mmorpg right out of the ballpark for at least 5 straight years (yes, the fantasy ones too).

However, SOE pretty muched raped the game since release.  I cant use any other word but "rape"...thats how strongly they screwed this "potentially massive financial, popular game" up.

Now, SOE is going back and reworking the Jedi system....one of the most coveted professions in the game cause people are pissed that they suffer permadeath and have to start over.  SOE did this for a reason.....so every tom, dick, and harry wont be a Jedi.

Now, that you can die as many deaths as you want and still train up, I'll predict about 70% of all Jedi will be Master Jedi before the anniversary date of SWG......now; thats sad

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

    I concur En1gma...

Are they TRYING to push away subscribers? LMAO. How could they think this is a good idea? They should have never put Jedi in this game in the first place. It just screws the continuity of the movies. The SOE/SWG situation gets more funny by the month.

And it's already pretty darn funny!

Note that Xplororor has so far avoided this thread, as he can't combat it with his goofy "statistics"..

OK, so I get in from a long day of driving.. and I load up SWG Stratics, and see that Holos will be nearly useless in the upcoming system. I think this is the thing that may just tip the scales for me between fun and frustration. Why? Because I probably have more holos in one spot in my possession than 99% of the players out there. Due to my long-standing goal of making Master Architect on 8 servers, (the max you can make characters for on one account) Sitamun and myself and our friends already had established characters on many servers. Between what we got for having multiple accounts, the occasional double-issue due to how things panned out around x-mas, and the occasional server trade, I at one point had 21 holos sitting on the floor of my PA hall.

Why have that many, especially when I have no real interest in becoming a Jedi myself? Well, for one reason, I kept some for friends who did want to do it. (I've helped one guy halfway along so far) For another, it's just cool to have that many of an uncommon item in one place. (I'm not above having the occasional bragging rights.. I just don't do that very often anymore) Now, or soon anyway, they'll be nearly worthless. Thanks, SOE.

No, I'm not going to turn into one of the malcontents around here. If SOE manages to add enough new things to make up for this change, I might remain playing. If not, I'll more than likely find something else and just quietly cancel my accounts and avoid all things with the SWG name on them. (yes, including this section of the forum) I'm not big on dramatic exits anyway.

Really, I don't see what the fuss is about. The jedi system right now is garbage and has no depth to it at all. Also, searching for holocrons and grinding 5 professions plus a hidden one is completely and

utterly stupid. People that have gotten the holocrons for christmas don't want to give jedi a try because of these features. I rather have SOE put the new features in than me wasting time trying to learn 5 professions which adds no depth to the gameplay or advances the storyline. This way a new story will develope and grow on the players, something that needs to happen, very very fast. Even though I canceled my account 5 months back this might be interesting to see, I just wonder if they can implement this without any extra friggin screw ups.

However, removing permadeath completely contradicts what Q-3PO said about Jedi, as did the Holocron fiasco.  He said something to the effect of "It will be very very very very hard to become and survive as a Jedi."

Might as well throw the Jedi FAQ out the window.

They are already reporting that there were on average 100 Jedi per server.  Yes I said "were."  Someone found that out from a CSR about 3 weeks ago.

I fully disagree where you mention the Fantasy aka Tolkien-Themed MMORPGs too.

Not a chance, no matter how perfect SWG might have been. Totally different setting, game mechanics, features. Using a blaster, laser gun, carbine gun, sniper rifle, is far different than a bow and arrow, and having 80% of all players relying on melee in a medievel-type setting.

Now, SOE is going back and reworking the Jedi system....one of the most coveted professions in the game cause people are pissed that they suffer permadeath and have to start over.  SOE did this for a reason.....so every tom, dick, and harry wont be a Jedi.

I personally never played SWG with the intention of even wanting to become a Jedi. I was more intrested in characters like Han Solo, Lando, Dash Rendar, Chewie, Wedge, who survivied in a harsh galaxy without relying on a crutch like the Force. image

I fully agree with what everyone in this thread, has posted about the new "future" Jedi system though.

I personally would make Jedi even harsher than it first was. Die just once, forever dead. FS slot stays though.  Re-make the character over again if the player chooses.
