The WoW Hate Theory

RetehiRetehi Member Posts: 35

Why do people hate it?

Veteran players are sick of "kill x y times" and "collect x y times" and resent that so many people can find it entertaining. I know I am resentful. If I could erase my memory of playing WoW so that I could do it all over again I would.

Some excuses:

Endgame content

"Sucks"
Are you kidding me? The raid encounters released even over a year ago require massive tactical coordination from 40 people. Only the best groups of raiders can complete these fights in a reasonable timeframe and this says nothing of the most recently released AQ and Naxx content. Maybe you didn't get into a guild that meets your skill level. Sadly that's out of your control, but if everyone could be the best then "epeen" would have never been coined. My best advice is to powerlevel on a "New" server as soon as one is released and join a reroll guild, there are plenty.

"Yeah but I'm no 40 year old virgin living in mommy's basement."
Yeah you're right endgame content does suck if you can't give up 4 hours an evening to raid. But then, why do you care that it sucks? Are you sure you'e not the basement boy? I mean, your time is so invaluable that you're here complaining instead of doing any of the myriad of other activities your life contains. But seriously what would you have blizzard do? Keep releasing 5man/10man dungeons. Even those kinds of activities can take up in excess of 2hrs to complete only to reward you with gear that is already overstepping/repeating eachothers stats.

Server Stability and Logins

I have played 13 or so characters over 4 servers in the past year and very seldom was lag ever a game breaker. Sure patch weeks are rough at times but that is to be expected of a game. Chill out. People need to stop looking to this weak excuse as a means of bashing the game. Not only is it an exaggeration but people act as though it is an issue exclusive to WoW.

The queues blow, yes. But the longest I've ever had to wait is 15 minutes. That was on a server that'de been out since WoW went gold and only on the most intense gaming nights of the week.

Frankly all the spiteful WoW hate threads are silly and disturbing and I cannot wait until something better for us all to do than post on forums comes out.

No I don't play anymore, and I'm barely a fanboi.

You CAN handle the truth...it's just really slippery.

I think another reason is very simple and applies to all media. People try to hate things that are popular. They like to feel like they are cutting edge and not part of the flock of sheep. They tend to gravitate towards smaller titles, songs, bands, movies etc. Some of these people liked (random movie band or game) before. But as it grew more popular they felt their favorite game, movie, band had sold out and they moved on. These people like to feel like they are taking their first steps on the moon or something. Not bashing this group, as I've always been this way with music. This of course doesn't apply to everyone, but I think it does apply to a lot of them. People like to feel elite.

Another reason, which was my reason for quitting WoW. It felt like a lonely game. It's too solo friendly, so most people solo that I saw. Even when I was in a decent sized guild it wasn't easy finding groups. The community makes or breaks the game for me. I've found most games since the original EQ have become too solo friendly. The only game I've played since that was easy to find a group at any time is COH/COV. But messing around a few days with Ryzom, the community there seems decent thus far. People seem pretty nice and helpful there.

I don't hate WoW, in fact, I in part would play WoW again especially with this 1.12 patch. But I can see where the WoW-haters come from. A common and annoying assumption is that the more subscribers a game gets the better it must be. Well WoW doesn't strike me as any better than any other mmorpg on the market, it strikes me as a good mmorpg but nothing more. It is, in fact, a very different experience to many mmorpgs on the market. For instance, DAoC has a very famed endgame Pvp realm vs realm, CoH is a super heros themed mmorpg, EQ2 is a sophisticated and more group focused mmorpg,  AO is a sci-fi mmorpg, EQ is a more hardcore mmorpg with more expansive grouping and diversity in classes, EvE Online is a completely different mmorpg with a much steeper learning curve and a space theme. A mmorpg like WoW which is very game-focused really doesn't do much different apart from offer some quality Blizzard playability and therefore gets some of the more veteran mmorpgers annoyed when its gains 6m subscribers and gets esteemed as the best mmorpg ever as it really does other mmorpgs a bit of an injustice.

  • Did you actually state a theory?  I didn't see one.  All I saw was a statement of dislike of some trend.  Not a postulated theory or explanation.

Personally, I think WoW fanbois are just like Halo fanbois. Just so set on this game being the best and nothing can kill it when its just an ok game. I've played it for ~ 2 years. I'm not going to say its a horrable game, cause then why would I have played it. Its a nice game for people to come into MMOGs, but I think we should leave it as that. Personally I think WoW should be considered an introductory MMORPG. Of-course that means its still a MMORPG. (Thusly why people play it. Its so easy and unintemadating.) Hell, I know (Before I played RO) I thought all MMOs fit the story of EverCrack. If I played it I'd be addicited to it and forget about everything else. Also, I thought all MMOs were about figuring out complex UIs and learning to tools of the trade and what not, but they aren't all like that.

ist noch ein Platz f?r dich
    Ich suche dich
    Ich sehne mich
nach dem was ich geliebt hab
    doch ich find es nicht

my real problem with WoW, is not so much with WoW.  It's just a super simplified MMORPG that is great for little kids to play and flame each other.  It's the easiest MMORPG I have ever played.  I got bored with it.

now, my real problem is that the game gets credit for being a great game (it's not).  It is a great financial success, but a sub-par game when compared to almost every older MMORPG.  Now every new MMORPG has got to try to compete with WoW's numbers.  It's like the guy in the editorial said. 500K used to be a phenominal subscriber base, but now it is horrible because it is compared to WoW's 6.5 million.  Any company that can pump enough cash into a game to get 500K subscribers is going to try to make a game that will get 6 million subscribers.  I don't think there are 6 million good MMORPG players on this planet, so we won't see any well financed games that are true next generation descendants of games like UO EQ AC DAOC and AO.  MMORPGs should have gotten much more complicated and difficult, instead they got more simple.

It's not Blizzard's fault.  They made a game that Blizzard fans obviously love.  MMORPG companies need to recognize that Blizzard just figured out a way to make all the Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo fans pay $15 a month.

I think people hate it because they can't say "Wow!" whenever they're surprised without being bothered by nearby gamers. It forces people to be creative and make up new expressions of awe. But by then, the moment is lost...

The reason I hate WoW is the fact that I hate WoW.  So many people play and it's rated so high on all reviews I read about it.  It's the best MMORPG ever!!!!  Well when I played it, I hated it.  It was nothing new, nothing interesting.  I hate it so much because I was expecting to love it.

Anyway I've never bashed WoW on these forums, it is a solid game.  I just hate it personally.

In what direction would you like to see MMOs go, kahnz?
Over the last few months I've begun to think that MMOs are not for me anymore but I'de love for it to be the inverse.
I remember AO being nothing but repetitous mission room running, and after I quit it became Heckler farming in SL.

SB was a good pvp adreniline rush but the same hack and slash.

The whole genre follows the stat/skill/ability model of character progression and as I see it asking for anything that isn't a grind is asking for something out of the scope of "MMORPG"s.

more and more ppl recognize what wow really is, a simple item grind - and begin to hate themself that they wasted so much time in the game. well, there MUST be something wrong if people quit and feel bad about the past months...

I don't hate it, I simply don't like it anymore. Who I hate is Blizzard - once great company now driven by complete incompetence.
