if you really understood what they renamed it was : MMOFPS / MMORPG... this means it takes the classic MMORPG style ( which is thousands of players with a monthly fee attached ) and include FPS into it. Not trying to ell or anything just makin a point.
I role played on Planetside once...I was trying to get people from the Vanu empire to go over to the Terran or New Conglomerate empires, I was stating all the evils of the Vanu and speaking out against the Vanu goverment and technologies...but every one just laugh and called me names......*tear*.
I agree, though, most games don't RP enough. When I played DAoC, one night I got on one of the RP servers and tried to play completely with RP responses and actions...then people run up to me for some cash so they can buy their"Scale BP".
Its sad to say but,...RP-ing is kind of dead in MMORPG's at this point in time.

The dead know only one thing: it is better to be alive.
If you want Role Playing, wait till I post my story about being a bomber pilot who flew in a 25 bomber formation out Ramsgate England, bombed a factory in Germany and landed in Brussels after the mission.
I was emotionally wore out just remembering it and writing it all down.
I did this in the WWIIOL thread but the website hiccuped and my post was lost.
As a teaser here is a post I made shortly before my bomber post was lost.
Originally posted by sparpg Pruitt, I asked this in a separate thread, but perhaps you can help. How would you rate the air combat in WW2 online? I have played Warbirds and Aces High and the level of realism to the flying physics are pretty good. As I am a pilot myself, I am very critical of flight sims. I know that WW2 online is not just a flight sim, it is a WW2 simulation. Still, what are your thoughts on the air combat and over all flying realism?
I can answer this pretty well I think. First of all we had a guy who was a U.S. Navy pilot instructor and he loved the flight model and helped CRS tweak it through some suggestions. His name was T2driver, as in T2 Buckeye.
If that's not enough for you. Listen to this.
I love to fly even though I am not a great pilot. I had listend to a Navy pilot describes some of the things you do to try to recover from a flat spin. I got to put that knowledge to the test in WWIIOL.
I was in a Spitfire Mk1 and went head to head with a Bf109. I got the kill on him but we also clipped wings and I went into a serious flatspin. Ithought I was done, but we were very high up when it happened and there were 3 other Allied pilots right there.
This guy was vulching our birds flying out of Knokke and jumped them out over the water a mile or 2 from land.
Me and these other guys decided to take away this guys altitude advantage and climb over our airfield. Once we got to 10k we went hunting. We needed the height though because this guy was good at the Boom and Zoom.
ANyway, he saw us and started to climb too and the BF109 being a better climber, he got even with our altitude. I decided to press the issue before he got above us and forced him into a head to head pass.
Like I said, I got the kill but we clipped wings as we passed and I went into a flat spin.
The other guys were saying "Dang, that sucks Sneaky". I was going to ride it to the ground but then I decided real quick to see if I could fight the spin. I started doing what I remembered the guy saying to do and wouldn't you know, I started seing some results. SO I kept it up and all of a sudden the nose was pointind down and controls started coming back.
I let the speed build up and then pulled up about 1,000 feet above the water. One of the guys said he was filming it with his VCR but I haven't gotten it yet.
Anyway all three of those guys were like, "OMG!!! I saw that Sneaky!!!". They were going nuts and couldn't believe I had recovered from a flat spin.
Need more convincing? WWIIOL planes perform within 2% of war time testing in all flight envelopes.
I feel that MMOPG is a usefull idea. Thats Massive Multiplayer Online Persistant Game.
PS is not a Roleplayer in the traditional sense of the idea. But there are those who will always quivel over the diametric of Roleplaying and Rollplaying. Roleplaying being that you take on and effectivly pretend to be a FULL on alternate personna, and Rollplaying being when you use dice or random number generatitive programs to fulfill a simulation of uncommon physics, AKA those types of things that you would not do to yourself in real life for fear of personal injury. Planet Side to me is currently a mmoFPS, with a slight ROLLplay element to it. IMHO Planet Side should really add in tons more senerio/setting/story content. I feel that would take PS from an average game that is ecentially a poor FPS and a poor RPG and make it into a very good mmoRPG.

Dude.. its a MMOFPS which means Massively (alot of people ) Multiplayer (Real ppl) Online (People are online) First-Person (Which means inside the view of a combat unit) Shooter (Shoot the hell out of people ) But... dont forget.... This is still a MMORPG because you use your rank pnts to get other stuff.
Planetside is one of my best games i played online. I dont like games where u klick on the enemies and wait that u have enough hitpoints to get them. Planetside is more like a shooter but it feels more realistic.
I like to stay in an outfit (similar to gilde) we meet each other on the islands and try to get the enemy bases or towers. Most of the vehicles are alone useless.
I hope that games like planetside will stay here on www.mmorpg.org because its a great diffence between Planetside and for example BF42.
And you should remove the RPG part from it's grade... it's only lowering it's total grade.
A MMO game shouldn't be judged on how much RPG it is... a MMO game don't have to be a RPG. And that the characters can get levels etc doesn't make it a RPG. And the fact that the character is saved doesn't either or both those fact together.
REMOVE the RPG factor from the grading. Every future MMO game won't be a MMORPG.
It's a MMOFPS - It also has RPG Aspects. So, i'd say that it's ability to be on the boards here is good. I know this because I've actually played it, though I did not like the game myself, it definitely has RPG status.

That's sad... really it is. I like your site and all and I was gonna post about WHY PS was on the list, and that was because it's an MMO, games like counterstrike arn't. PS has a persistant world, you log on take a tower log off, log on the next day and unless someone else has hacked it, it's still under yer empires control. Where as a standard FPS game's environment is reset everytime you hit "launch".
However if you guys are gonna say it's because "We define "role-playing" as being able to have a character that can progress with experience/levels/skills/etc and be saved when you leave the game" then take FURCADIA off the list. No stats or skills there, just role playing by talking to tons of perverts.
Curse your double standards. PS belongs on the list, furcaida doesn't
