GavinburtGavinburt Member Posts: 6

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying the game today.

I have ONE question.  How big is the EVE's population?

Thanks!

I believe that the total subscriber base is around 500k total, averages of players are around 15-21k as others have previously noted.

If you are new, you will find loads of players in the primary systems. As time goes on and you stretch out, they will get scarce and you will be glad.

Wow!  I couldn't even finish the tutorial.  That is the single most brutal thing I've gone through in the past week!

It's like a totally different game.  I really don't understand even how to move, LOL!  As far as I can tell, you just click on what you want to do and it is automatically done for you.  Am I correct?

I'll have to take another stab at the tutorial tomorrow.  I guess it's time to stock up on energy drinks.

Try asking on the in-game noobie channel. Should be opened automatically due to your character age.

When in doubt, right click. The forst thing to do is get Frigate 3 trained. Kill the tute to get the training started, then go back and do it. Don't waste a minute of real time, always have something training. The rest will come in time.

Double left click on an empty spot in space (ie, not on any icons) and the ship will move in that direction at the speed you have currently set (normally just leave speed at max)

What was the single most brutal thing in the week before? :s Though I am not sure I want to know :p

Usually .. no. Moving in space works by either double clicking at the backdrop in the rough direction you want to move Another option is to ricght click on an object and choose "approach", "dock", "warp to", "orbit", etc. as a command for your ship. Every one of those move commands has its advantages and disadvantages, and a situation where it is useful. "Warp to" and "dock" are obviously quite important :)
If you want to move from one system to another you usually use the autopilot. How to set waypoints you either ask in game or check out the tutorial again, where it is covered.

There is actually very little that is "done for you"  There are so many layers to the game that you will still be discovering new layers years after you have started.  The game really is that deep.

15k to 25K online on average, sometimes mroe on sunday evenings.

Toal Tranquility-server population is about 130K to 150K I'd guess. In about two months it'll hike up to 170-200 when the first Kali expansion becomes imminent.

If it makes you feel any better it took me a week to figure out there was an autopilot feature

    I can't stress this enough:
    DO
    The
    Tutorial

Trust me, you'll regret it if you don't.
    Also
    Read The Manual
EVE is one game you will WANT to have read this... maybe not right away but take the time to read through the online tips etc.  Then read the forums... and talk in noob channel... alot...

EVE is a very complex game and has one hell of a learning curve.  Some people love it... some people find it boring... nobody I know actually hates it though :)

read the manual.. heh, yeah right. There is no manual :)

Do the tutorial - yeah, gives you the basics.
talk on the starter corp channel, ask questions etc.
Read the boards, find out information, ask questions there (especially in the "EVE New Citizens Q&A")

In this game - information is trump - what you dont know can get you killed, sometimes very fast and brutally.

if you are ingame during euro evening times - have a check if "Varis" is online, convo me and i'll answer any questions you need :)

If thats the most brutal thing you've gone through all week, you must not have much to do :P

The game isn't easy to grasp.  It's good and it's bad.  It's good because most of the l33t kiddies don't have patience to learn it. :)

And I agree with that being one of the best things. When all is said and learned(and in this game I'm not sure that is possible), an MMO is the sum of it's community.

about there not being a manual... thats partly true, the manual that was in the boxed version (/me snuggles his original manual) is only for collectors and not for giving any hints

however, you could take a look at this nice Player Guide that should cover many basic things.

id call that the closest thing to a manual available atm

lol this is sooo true. really, the community makes this game great. otherwise it would be just plain boring.

i began to love eve when i got into a corporation with nice and cool people.

i guess that many of those who didn't like the game and found it boring just played it by themselves

I believe there are about 130,000 accounts, maybe a bit more or less.

I have good reason to believe that the number of actual players is about half that (65,000) or perhaps even less.  The reason is there are many who hold two or more accounts because it allows you to train two characters.
