? active # populations in top mmorpgs ?

Am wondering what the top mmo populations are. Not the total number of CD accounts sold (includes those that have since left the game) nor those hot boxing 3 or 4 accounts, but the actual number individuals playing the game.
Like before daoc retailed EQ used to list it's server populations, about 60 - 80k nightly, then when daoc retailed it lost about 20k players & refused to continue posting the individual server popoulation #s. Then EQ gave away 50k free 1 month accounts & started inticating it had over 100k playing nightly...
In contrast AC tries to keep 13k & AC2 about 3k nightly. I think lineage in asia is supposed to have over 500k nightly & no idea what uo still keeps nightly.::8^)::
Any links or data you guys can provide will help, since the # playing a game long time is a good indication of the quality of that game..... if the CS is lousy & game play lacking, people just do not keep paying subscriptions.

I believe the death of AC2 will be prolonged now with Turbine's purchase of the franchise.  Since then there has been alot more optimisim in the game.  As well as over the last two weeks the server populations actually seem to be rising.

FF11 now has a +500K Asian (Japan) membership. Through the Playonline plus (pol+) service N. American users will access the beta.

    2 things :

    1. Lineage "used to" have 4 mil subscribers couple years ago when it was at it's height, now it's one point something million.

    2. this is just my opinion, but AC2 will probably die out even though turbine bought back the rights since they're working on Middle Earth Online.  And the game's already at such a bad state, i don't think it'll last even past this year unless they get some serious work into the game.

by the way, AC still has 13k ppl a night? hm.. wonder if i should go back to it until WoW comes out...

Where did you get THAT information??
    4 million?

IMHO that is the wet-dream of any MMOG publisher, but it has yet to come....

4 million is quite exaggerated if you ask me.

Quoted from the official NCsoft website at  http://www.ncsoft.net  in their history section:
"Currently, the company’s flagship product, Lineage, a major cause of the explosive growth in online games in Asia, is recognized as the world’s largest online game and boasts 3.2 million monthly active users and three hundred thousand concurrent users. "

    Also taken from http://www.lineage.com :
"In Korea, its blockbuster hit game Lineage™ commands a 47% market share and attracts the greatest number of concurrent users in the world. Currently there are more than four million active subscribers worldwide playing Lineage."

Everquest has over 500K accounts with over 100K on at peak times. I know this because I remember an announcement during the game when they broke the 100K barrier... think they broke 150K sometime end of last year...

I know in NA, EQ is the largest MMORPG... cant consider FFXI since thier servers are shared globally (also cant choose which server you play on, main thing that pisses me off).

Well..mmm..if this is true I stand corrected (and surpsised I might add), but I have a hard time to trust data coming from the creator/publisher themselves, but as they are the only source we have nothing to verify.

I can hardly believe that Lineage has more subscribers than AO, EVE, DaoC, EQ and SWG together....Sounds like a load of commercial spin doctoring BS to me.

lineages is that big over there, but you have to remimber som of the other weard stuff going on over there, they are light years ahead of the rest of the world when you look at internet development and the use of it.

    Oh really?
Well, last time I was over there (business wise) I didn't really witness that.

Internet development and -use is limted to the business area mostly.
I-net penetration on a private level in Asia is far behind the US and Europe.

You sure you wernt in North Korea? Or maybe the last time you were over there it was prior to the Seoul Olympics.. I have had 2 tours over there the last one ending in 2003 and I can tell you that South Korea is light years ahead of NA as far as Internet Penatration.. When you have huge apartment Complexes 8 stories high and ever unit is built in wired up to the internet then you know you got penetration. Not to mention the thousands of internet Cafe's that they have on ever block. My last tour was in Yunsang and there cafe's were like freaking nite clubs (just that many people). You should see there technology markets and there love for games its insane. I for one can believe Lineage's numbers South Koreans are computer and game junkys.

And thats why I love em hehehehe

There is a major problem with EQ'2 inflated subscription vs active user #s.
    1. They gave away over 70,000 one month trial subscriptions last summer, when they started braging about the +100k online users.
    2. Since daoc there was a steady decline of active users, hence why they stoped showing the #s on each server.
    3. Many long time users sold their accounts (over the last two years) on ebay, so now of the "400k" subscriptions, many users have 2 and even 4 accounts. So, individual users were usually between 60 and 80k. Also SOE does not make clear the accounts... is that number the total number of accounts on record or the current number of paying subscriptions. It like counts the total number of CDs sold and attributes that number as it's number of accounts, and has claimed it retains 2/3 of it's former accounts.
    4. Last month EQ offered old time accounts i think 2 weeks to come back and check things out, and again SOE boasted the new inflated #s online.
    5. Though it is not published EQ's days are limited, with EQ2, SOE wants to reduce the number of subscribers, charge more and drastically reduce the CS and bandwidth costs, thereby improving the bottom line. Alot of the old-time dev & staff is going to Sigil and problems are not getting fixed, much less addressed.

I would say SWG had 125,000 on a busy night in early January. Of course, that is if the pop limits on servers and the way the servers report pops haven't been changed.

Horizons, I'm unsure about. I don't know their server limits...

lol, are you really that stupid or are you so attention depraved that you would type up something this absurd, or do you just live in a cave?

and his comment on the internet level being nothing compared to US... how little he knows... South Korea has the highest per person ratio in the world for high speed internet access.

..and you have to work on your personal intelligence and social skills penetration mate.

Please go somewhere else if you can't engage in a normal, non-insultive, discussion.

That is a very interesting link! Although the author does state many of his sources are unofficial, it is still a very insightful view on the current MMORPG trends. A good read.

    Very interesting data indeed.

It does strenghten my belief that the 4.5 Million Lineage claims are bogus and utter lies.
Especially when compared with the leader of the pack, numbers-wise: EQ.

Anyway, it gives some good insight in what's probably going on and Im personally surpirsed by the low number of AO subscriptions...

Also very interesting is the part on the period we're in now: uncertainty.

I think we will see quite some MMOG's tip over and be victim to a pending shake-out.
Those wo are able to do server-merges will do so (SWG springs to mind).
I predict that a few keep standing (some with their sequels pending): EQ2, WoW, Anarchy Online (with Cities of Rubi-Ka), SWG (+ space pack) and EVE (just rlsd Tech lvl 2). The rest are up for a rough ride in 2004.

Up and coming could be Dark and Light, but not sure if they will be able to live up to the expectation.

And lets not forget Lineage II that will have 7 million subscribers....yeah sure right image

    Let's see

As for my current favourite, Eve Online, a recent interview stated that the total number of subscribers is approaching 50.000, which may not sound like a lot. However, since everyone plays on the same persistent server, this usually translates into rather high numbers of users.

This last sunday, February 1, saw a new record number of simultaneously logged on users - no less than 6.840 at around 20.30 GMT! I'm glad to report the lag in my part of the galaxy was non-existent. Yay!  image

Did you even bother reading through the whole report or just skimmed through it to find data to support your one-sided arguement? Here is the insert  from the report about the numbers on lineage verbatim:

And you will note that I do not show Lineage: The Blood Pledge on this graph.  Why?  Well, two main reasons.  First, it would completely dwarf the other MMOGs, distorting the graph and making visual comparisons much more difficult.  But more importantly, because the way Lineage counts a player is quite different.  The may have close to 4 million “subscribers”, but most of these players did not buy a box at the local software store and then pay a monthly subscription fee like traditional MMOGs.  Instead, they play in “PC baangs”, Internet cybercafes in Korea that buy Lineage access from the company and then sell it at hourly rates to customers.  This, combined with the unusual Korean dynamic of rapid deployment of broadband and the fact that imports of Japanese console platforms were restricted, made Lineage unusually popular.  Lineage’s lack of success in the United States via the more “traditional” MMOG model only proves this out.  Now, I have nothing personal against Lineage… but trying to compare it to other MMOGs is almost like comparing apples to oranges.  Interestingly, according to a talk at this year’s GDC, approximately 50% of Lineage subscribers now access the game on their PC at home, paying a flat monthly fee like other MMOGs.  I might reconsider graphing Lineage in the future, if they can come up with a way of counting subscribers in the same way the other MMOGs do.

However way you cut it, close to 4 milllion people were playing this game and was paying for it. Those are the only numbers that matter to companies anyway. Heck they sent me a copy of the game and I never played it because it looked like a D2 clone, but for me to be bias about how many people were playing is ignorant when the facts are given to you. So even at 50% of the subscribers being counted now it would bring that number down to maybe say 2 million.........eat crow my friend.

game droped major amounts of players.
