Not on the Top??

How can this game not be on the top 8 mmo's. I don't get it. It's 8.1 tied with half the games on there, and yet for some reason Auto Assault is there instead. I can understand maybe putting other games with large fanbases like DAoC even though i think AO is far superior.... BUT AUTO ASSAULT c'mon that game can't even be take seriously..

Auto Assault is a new game so expect to see its score move around for a while. AO is older with more votes so takes more to shift the score one way or the other. Also many judge games based on it's graphics which is not AO's strong point and WoW brought a lot more casual players to MMORPGs but AO takes more learning so many quit early due to that.

AO's ok... personally I think it's rated a bit high here.   I'd give it a 7 out of 10 personally.

But I play for free, so I don't complain about it :)  It's definitely worth the price I pay :)

It has been on the top for ages and maybe its AO's time to give room for new games.

bit unfair to judge it based on the free-experience without all the expnsions
(and that's where the phatz come from)

IMO, there are a lot of things this game does, that other games do much better.... crafting, player housing, mounts and vehicles are a few examples. IT is a pretty good game, and i loved it while i was playing for free. i was pretty disappointed when I purchased all the expansions and didn't really see anything to compel me to pay the monthly fee... I'd still be playing if there was an option to go back to being a froob without having to start all over. It just isn't worth the monthly fee to me. I suppose in it's heyday it was a great game, but it is getting pretty dusty these days.

As to the OPs original point... i agree 100 percent that AO is a far better game than auto assault. I can criticize the poor vehicle implementation in AO... and auto assault may have done vehicles better, unfortunately that is all they did. I really wouldn't even play that game if it was free.

SNIP!

The examples provided are game-play elements, but maybe crafting aside, are not fundamental elements [IMO]. 2nd generation MMORPGs have improved upon non-core game-play elements, but I feel do not offer different styles of gaming, or a fundamentally different experience to 1st generation MMORPGs.

Where you hit the nail on the head is with the expansions for 1st generation MMORPGs. They contain classic 1st generation mistakes: trivalizing previous content, time-sinks, grind, with little variety to core game-play. What I refer to as SOE staple :P

I'd be quite happy to pay a reduced sub fee purely for Rubi-Ka. I agree 100% that the other expansions do not compel me to pay a sub fee either. On the other hand, aside from Eve Online (heck! Eve Online was released 3 years ago! Not exactly that contemporary), I cannot think of any other game that I would potentially pay a sub fee. Indeed, it's hard enough to think of a game where I would play the free trial (CoH purely for the character creation, and SoR for the sandbox experience - although I feel sandbox games are the red-headed step-child of the MMORPG genre due to pre-CU transformation into NGE debacle).

Getting back to the topic, one has to remember that AO is 5 years old and doesn't compete with new titles in the graphics whorage stakes. Whereas, I feel that the newer titles do not compete with 1st generation MMORPGs in the game-play stakes. Go figure. Also, one cannot over-state that AO is the poster-boy for the worst ever launch in MMORPG history. Look at other titles that have had horrid launches - all suffer from the same fate in trying to play catch-up.
