I own eq2 but currently don't have a subscription- of the games I currently own and am considering playing again, I enjoyed this one the most when I played. My problem is that I love PvP, but I seem to have hit a wall, since I started the game after the PvP servers were live- once I hit antoncia (sp?) I get ganked, like crazy. I am honestly not one to cry about ganking, it happens and I'll take my beating, but I would log in, die, respawn, have gankers waiting, die, respawn... and the game itself forces you to decide, do I want to get ganked for the 1000th time tring to put up a fight I can't win, or just log out?
basically, I enjoy EQ2 and I enjoy PvP, but I just don't understand how a newcomer, with no guild or support, is expected to advance on a PvP server at this point. This isn't intended as any kind of flame, just an honest question. I like the game itself and would like to play, I just want to stand a chance at least long enough to make some friends and have some backup.

There are several suggestions I can offer to help you. One would be to join a guild. There are always lots recruiting.... even unexperienced players who are mature and show a comitment to at least learn the game and contribute. They've recently added a new, easy to use interface that lists all guilds actively recruiting, and tells you who and what they are looking for etc. If you're un-guilded, bring up your guild window to access this information (U is the hotkey I believe)
Another would be roll a freeport toon, as on most pvp servers it seems that fp outnumbers Qeynos making ganking less of a problem. When pvp first started, the freeport advantage was much bigger imo. It was a pain just venturing outside of the Qeynos walls. Things have evened out a bit now, and not nearly as bad as it was then. Also the classes you pick can make quite a difference.... for example most scouts have tracking and stealth so that you can see the gankers coming and pick and choose your battles... and even evac so that you can get out if needed.
As many will tell you, soloing is difficult on pvp servers. I would always travel in groups, at least until you get more familiiar with the pace of pvp. You can type /LFG to set yourself as 'Looking for a Group', or type '/who all LFG' which will tell you other players looking for a group. The class you play will help determine how needed you are, and how easy it is to find a group. Healers seem to do well, same with plate armor tanks like guardians.
There are several instanced zones throughout norrath where pvp is disabled. This will help you to grind xp and level up your toon for the pvp aspect.
One last suggestion is to modify the time you're playing. I play early in the morning sometimes, and I can go from one end of the world to the other without seeing a single enemy in my level range. (Or maybe just a couple). If you play in the evening or on weekends, you can expect to see alot more people of both alignments roaming around.
