I'm tired of potential. Potential only frustrates me. I spent years giving my money to games with potential. I stayed with SWG hoping beyond hope they'd balance their skill based system and get rid of botting, and focus on building what they already made. I voted with my wallet for DnL because of the innovations that it promised. I saw the word potential all the time at SWG. I see the word potential all the time at DnL. The only thing that any game with "potential" has ever given me is frustration and disappointment. So, I'm done with potential. Give me an SWG or DnL that actually works and stays true to its vision and it WILL get my money. Until that time, I'll go play WoW with the kiddies.
I really needed to quote this because i absolutely agree with it.
I am also absolutely fed up with half arsed or almost perfect and for whatever reason early releases of games.
WoW has a few inovations anyone denying to see them is just beeing in danyial and nothing else, but were these inovations the reason behind it's initial success, hell no.
WoW's bigest success from day one, and bigest inovation in some sense as it was the first to do so, was because the released a complete, almost bug free game, a product that its only potential was for it to add new content as the content allready introduced was pretty much complete and any patching up it may have needed was so small that it is negectlible.
Gaming companies dont need to re-invent the wheel, and whenever a new game comes out that promises that they have done so are outwright lying, when the wheel has been established as the best tool for its job constantly trying to invent better ones is not a risk it is plainly stupid, what you need to do is improve upon the wheel.
The industry has produced a great number of games of every variety, keep the good stuff get rid of the bad ones and don't try too hard to be innovative, beeing innovative is not an aquired trait, it is a talent you either have or don't have.
So to all companies that want to release mmorpgs i have this to say, make your release absolutley playable as bug free as possible and fun from the bigining, spend enormous amounts of money to make this happen mainly for paying the trully great professionals to do your jobs, use the succesfull elements of other games, try to improve upon them, don't worry about inovations if you have the talents in your team to come up with them they will if you dont then just go with the flow.
But whatever you do absolutely make sure that the first time someone logs in stays loged for as long as he wants and he imediately feels like he has spend his time good, if the first thing someone does when he logs in your game is log out be sure he will probably not log back in again ever.
I played WoW about a year ago, up to about level 57. I quit because I knew the endgame was just large raiding, something I wasn't interested in. Some innovation there. Plus, all my guild had quit for the same reason. I can't remember anything about the game that was memorable, except for the fun I had with my friends. There aren't any games out right now that we want to play as a guild. So, I'm playing Guild Wars: Factions and enjoying it solo.
