Final Fantasy XI: Any Good?

TuutobTuutob Member Posts: 607
Well I've seen some terrible reviews for it, but here it has a pretty good score. Anyone wanna give me an explanation on the following?

*Any exploration involved?
*As much grind as said?
*Any PvP? If so, is it pretty well rounded?
*Is community pretty good?

I'm planning on getting it for the XB360, so for the last question it may help if you had it for the console too.

Thanks!

Do yourself a favor: just get it for PC.

Exploration? yeah, the world has become pretty big over the years.
Grind? Yup, pretty big grind. but FFXI is group based, there is a chance you won't even notice the grind
PvP? yup, tough its crap. the game is not build for it. its also limited to one event
Community? So far, its the best mmo community I have ever seen.

Hmm I've always wondered about trying this but its never offered a free trial. I'm appealled by the fact its final fantasy and it has quite a indepth class and grouping system. But its graphics look completely different to final fantasy and with a really unusual style and I don't really want to risk the money to play a game I might not like.

I thought like you when I saw Final Fantasy in a MMORPG. How can it fail?!

Well, I played it for a while and yep... Its not that great. I don't know what the above posted constitutes as a grind... But FF11 definatly has one that will notice. Especially if you happen to die right after you level and get the lovely LEVEL DOWN animation, *gag*.

Best community? Hardly. You sit in the prime leveling spots for your level range looking at the LFG thing, what do you see alot of? Groups saying JAP only, or when you do ask for a invite, you get japanese as a response. Thats even if you can find a group. If you are one of the more popular classes, you can acually sit and wait for a group for hours to no avail. Soloing is almost impossible in FF11 btw.

Unless you get to the point where you can get your artifact armour, and look like the FF classes we all know and love, the rest of the armour is boring and bland. They recycle armour animation, AND enemy animation. You will be fighting crabs and bees and bats that look the 'exact' same your entire leveling career, they just have a slightly different shade of colour and a different name.

All this isn't to say it doesn't have its pros... But I found the gigantic time sink (Way more than most MMORPGs), the boring reused animation, and the *gag* level penalty, was to much for me. I quit after 2 months.

Yeah... It seems like it's the kind of game people really hate or really enjoy.

So I say go for it. If you hate it, well... whoops. But you could end up loving it.

There is a time sink, but I feel it's more than worth it, and if you are a lone wolf the community won't seem that great, but if you interact with people and (more importantly) are good at your job, people will remember you and waiting for groups doesn't take long.

and for those that thing FF doesn't look like a FF game, just wait till 12 is released
