Quests=Treadmill Grind

Nerf09Nerf09 Member CommonPosts: 2,953

Just like killing monster "X" gains you "Y" amount of experience, quests are a canned treadmill grind.

I hope I don't see a single quest in this game.  A good game doesn't need quests, but players interacting with eachother actively by trading, waring, stealing, and building.  If there are are any quests, there is a fundamental flaw somewhere that needs to be addressed.

Well then, by your standards, almost every other MMORPG in existence is fundamentally flawed.

The only quests I ever saw in the game were little errands for NPCs. "Give this message to the merchant across the forum for a couple of sesterces." Apart from that, the quests that will be in the game will be live, dynamic quests: RB given. For example,

If a group of barbarians (players, of course) starts attacking roman fortifications, RB could, and will, "start a quest" to eliminate said barbarians. On the other hand, a barbarian chieftain (again, RB) could have primarly proposed a quest to players to take over said fort.

That is the type of quests that there will be.

    Yup.

Don't blame me the average joe lacks substandard imagination capabilities.

Looks like the 'quest fanboys' have chimed in.  Who will program the quest-bots without quests?  How will they gain an unfair advantage without constant questing predictability?  Where will I get my quest-bots?

Lol, Nerf what ur saying is a total joke. I know, cause you have no idea what to expect from RV. Unfortunately to get to the good part of the game, you have to do a few quests to be able not to feel like a noob. Alternatively you could do the Magistrate (a player position incharge of a town) a favour and he can take off the noob stats off you. When ur in noob mode, you can't be attacked, nor can attack, all you can do is learn the economy and simple crafting things. After the noob mode (also known as attending) is finally lifed, you are free to do what the hell you like and no, there isn't really what you could call quests.

There are no lvls, there is nothing, just one sandbox of things to do and a lot of RolePlaying elements and the such.

I have no idea how you got such an idea of a strong presence of quests, when there really isnt, In the begining, if there is no magistrate, or the magistrate doesn't think you should be allowed to lift your attending, you do quests for this NPC guy, (quests of crafting) not fighting and after u've done them thats it, you can fight and your not a noob anymore and havea  load of possibilities....and the only grinding there is is in the crafting. Crafting in RV in the begining can be a nightmare, till you settle in with your professions, then it starts to get really fun after.

Anyway, I am just trying to make you understand, RV is nothing to do with quests. Once you get past noob mode, which can be taken off within 3 days, if not less, you are free to do what you want. There is no such thing as Exp, but something very similar to Ultima Online.

I don't know what to put here yet.

Actually, the quests that you do for the master are very boring and long.  The first few are okay because you are just like delivering scrolls to get a tunic or whatever.  Later, you have to buid piles of supplies and I think one of them used to be to build a hut.  If they are the same quests, you will have quite a while before you can build that hut.   If you put crappy components on it then it falls apart and as a newb you can't get any good components.

There are workarounds for the hut, no one really builds it. It's a very stupid system, though, I admit.

Not to worry, there will be more ways out of attending as soon as we get some more important issues taken care of.

As far as player generated quests.  Well, just go up to a player and ask them if they need anything.  Like maybe you can go get some firewood for them, or some Ore.  Talk to them, agree on a payment and you're off.  What I'd suggest is trying to hook up with a player association in the area as RV is a very much social game.

Well, if you get their wood, don't give it to them till you get your money. If they don't pay then they don't get firewood. Not that difficult to figure out.

But I can be a jerk and make you do stuff I dont intend on paying.

That's why finding a guild or the like is important... dont rely on total strangers.

I'd suggest instead of dropping the wood, use the trade window.  It requires both parties to agree to the contents and payment before goods and payment are transfered.  Still not fool proof, but business is risky.  :)

The next positive post I see from Nerf will be his first and he has what 900+ posts at this site? If the game was perfect he would still have a problem with it.

See what I mean instead of disputing the comment by drawing references to positive posts he has posted in the past he creates yet another negative post. Sigh. Btw I can't be a fan boi that would require actually playing the game I think. I just don't want you scaring off everyone posting information about the game with your constant attacks so that I can get enough information to make a purchasing decision.
