A plea to adult gamers

OK, this is a plea to all adult MMORPG players out there.  I played Earth and Beyond and liked it.  It was my intro game to the genre.  It was running out of content when it was discontinued. Then I went to SWG.  I loved it and played for 2 years...then NGE came. Now I play Wow, but I am unhappy there for all the reasons that ppl list for being unhappy there.

No one can deny the success of Wow, nor can they dispute the ease of the UI.  I just want a community. Period. I want Sci-fi, crafting and enough other adults that there is a COMMUNITY. I want to craft and have a profession. I want MY STUFF.  I miss my house and my art work in SWG. I miss being able to look a little different than every other toon. I miss making friends with my armorsmith or architect.  I miss going on hunts with more than 4 people. I miss my cantina, The Kat's Meow. I miss my guild, although many of us have reconvened on Wow.  I miss the complexity that required me to THINK.

Is there anything out there? What about AO? I have heard that the game is dying. Does anyone have thoughts on that?

I am an adult professional. These games are my escape from the responsibility that I have at work. I need something that is immersive enough to take me away from RL for a while.  I am also a woman (tehe) so I like to chat and help and ask for help.  Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance!

hm, I think you might like The saga of ryzom. there is a free trial going on, the game is known for its mature community and deep crafting. its not really sci-fi, its a mix between Fantasy and Sci fi (altough more fantasy then sci-fi, really) so, give it a go!

EVE Online is what you want then.  If you decide to join it give me a hollar.  I can get you in to a good production corporation :)  You might not be able to get a house, but you get hangars and corporate space stations!

However, if EVE isn't your thing, try out AO.  It might have a dying MMO community (What isn't now a days with WoW's mainstream and all and potential MMO hobbyists using that game as the measuring stick for the industry?) but all the same, it's pretty fun.  I gave it a try.  Not my cup of tea but it might be yours!

Best of luck finding a game though :)

Runescape would be a good game for u if it weren't for the pointless easiness of the quests, and the lame community they have, hmmm i have converted to Silkroadonline tho, try that but i warn u its QUESTS SUCK, but in time it might be a lil better

I played EVE when ENB first died and I liked it OK. I heard that there have been lots of changes....Do you agree? I played it when space mining was new, I think.  All we could do was have a ship and land on stations, has that changed?

A ton has changed since you left Kat.  There are now huge wars spanning entire regions, mining is most certainly a good way to make profit (though you need to be highly specalized), and to say the least, you can do anything your imagination thinks of now.  How's that help :)

(Oh and Corporate Alliances, some of the best crafting the MMO Genre has to offer (I love building Tristans for newbies), tactical combat, over 5000 solar systems.  Yeah, you'll notice a lot has changed.  For the better I might add :))

I've found that from personal experience and playing EVE while it is a great complex game, a little to complex for a hobby. You take so much time learning it, and while I may not have the best attention span of all time, it seems a little to much in depth. I like free flow fighting which EVE Online in my opinion does not offer as well as some other games. But that is personal preference right there.
No doubt it is a good game, amazing graphics, but just not my thing. It takes to long to plan everything, there's so many different things, and to get anything very well you have to find the skill and buy the skill and train the skill.
Good luck on finding a game, however!
You should try out CoH, even if it may not be exactly all you want from your description of what you want, it is a amazing game. Best MMO in my opinion I have ever played.

Ryzom is as close as you will get.

Everything else is pre-chewed NPC directed kill task with little to no freedom like you want. Sorry to say.

A hobby is a hobby because you understand how complex things are yet you don't live your hobby as your life.  I am a professional Trumpet Player in Real Life.  Some people play instruments as a hobby yet they have all the technique to go pro if they really wanted.  (I know many people who just love guitar, wouldn't want to play it pro, but they will go out and buy these outrageous guitars for $50,000 and be able to tell me everything it does even what is used to make the strings.)

All hobbies take a long time to learn and master, the only difference between a hobby and a professional occupation is how much time you put in to it per day.  (Doesn't take much time to become really good with EVE and it's mechanics)

P.S. The only thing that ticks off most new players is the fact that when you get out of the tutorial the game doesn't just say "Kill this", it bassically says "You've been given the tools, now make a game out of this."  It's a playground as opposed to a theme park :)

As of last March you were still confined inside your pod.  I don't think that will ever change in EVE.

EVE was interesting, but the lack of ground content is what kept me from paying for it beyond the free trial.

Btw, you didn't happen to have a character on Sunrunner did you?  We had a player named -Kat in our guild (she also had a alts called -Kit and -Candy).

  • katonlinekatonline Member Posts: 10

nope, no alt on Sunrunner, but I did have alts on Intrepid and Tarquinas.

Thank you all for your thoughts on this! I knew that there was still a community out there!!!

I am going to download the new and improved EVE and also Ryzom ASAP.  My concern is that EVE was a little like a job. It had the crafting and the capitalism, but I did not have a community besides those that came with me from ENB.  I am willing to try again. Ryzom looks a little bit cartoony, but I am willing to give it a go as well.

Any thoughts on Anarchy Online? It has been mentioned but not elaborated on.

If you join to EvE, better find good and active corporation. It is not solo game. With good corporation it is great game. However, EvE still doesn't have player "characters" - only ships. AOs graphics are outdated, but at least it used to have great community (haven't played it in couple years). Saga of Ryzoms graphical style is pushing me away, so I haven't never tried it.

Best bets from future games are maybe Age of Conan (however it is going to be brutal game) and Vanguard (if you can live with greedy & stupid SOE - I can't.). Pirates of Burning Sea might also turn out to be intresting and Darkfall (seem to have already outdate graphics).  There is nothing like Pre-CU SWG now or coming.

If you mean whether you can leave your ship and run around with your character, no.

I would also suggest you take a look at Ryzom, very (!) friendly community, lots of co-op play. While it is not really science fction, it isn't that far away from the "Star Wars sci fi". Good character customization, flexible crafting, skill-based character advancement, stylish graphics. With the upcoming expansion you will be able to build "mini adventure scenarios" with an editor and share them with your friends in the game. From what you wrote it is certainly worth at least checking out the free trial version.

Edit: If you can live with the outdated graphics, AO is a decent game (but not outstanding in any area my opinion).

I agree with this. The community of SoR is mature, intelligent, literate, and friendly. The game has lots of depth. It's "science fantasy", so sort of a mix of fantasy and sci-fi. It also has a free trial, so you may as well give it a shot and see if you like it.

Kat, I too started with EnB, and loved SWG for 2 wonderful years until they destroyed the game.  And I too have been looking for a replacement.  Unfortunately, I've yet to really find one.  EVE is very good.  But it's also very slow.  And it's a LOT of zoning.  I stick to Empire space because I'm not really into PvP, but I feel like I'm also missing out on a lot of the game that way, particularly with respect to crafting and the player owned structures.  Like you, I want Sci Fi but there's very very very little out there to choose from.  I tried Ryzom but just couldn't get into it, partly because I couldn't find a toon I liked to look at, and partly because I kept getting killed in the very early stages.  And it's still fantasy.

There's really no sci fi out there atm.  Auto Assault is fun, but it's not SWG.  Entropia is interesting, but it's a RL money sink.  The game I've found with the best crafting now, and with no PvP tends to have a more mature crowd, is Horizons, but, like I said, there's no PvP at all.  Small community too, but generally a mature one.  But it's fantasy, not sci fi.

What's down the road for Sci Fi?  Well, there's the swgemu project, which could give us back pre-CU SWG if we can find a stable and reliable server host.  There's Star Trek Online for sometime in 2008.  And there's a fascinating-looking concept in very early development called Conflict:Omega which, if done correctly, could be a real winner.  But it's slim pickin's as far as Sci Fi goes, and EVE is about the best of the bunch now.

    Ty xix,

I am  downloading Ryzom as we speak. According to the forums there, a lot of SWG refugees are there.  Maybe it can be my home...for now.  I found EVE to be slow also, but have not tried it in a long time.  I still have an active Wow account, but....

You are right. There is nothing out that is exactly what I want, I am sure.  I am not looking (I guess) for Mr. Right Game, but instead Mr. Right Now.

BUT I will say..this thread has renewed my hope that there are other people out there that like what I like.  Everyone seems so happy with Wow (at least in Wow :P) and I feel like the Lone Ranger that is just too hard to please.

I can try Ryzom at no cost to me other than my time and if this thread is correct, I might find a super community to try it with.

    Thanks everyone.

Man, if BioWare's MMOG project is Sci Fi.....I'm so there becasuse I'm in the same boat as you, Katonline; nothing out there right now that's really appealing to me in particular.

Thanks for this thread because I've been having the same problem...finding a game close to pre-CU SWG in a post-NGE world.  Guess I'll be trying out Ryzom too.  I was looking forward to Vanguard but now that SOE's got their hands in the mix I just don't know.

If anyone can produce the "next big thing" in MMOs it's Bioware. I'll be in there like a shot.

I'd have to agree that overall EVE does have a pretty darned good community.  Nothing bothers me more in games than feeling like youre the only person playing due to an immature or non caring ocmmunity.  Eve is unique has loads of content, single shard which is fabulous, and once youre ready for it really good pvp.  Not to mention the fact that your skills continue to train up while youre busy with the family or at work =)

  • RattrapRattrap Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,599

I have the same problem like you.

I played WOW liked it - but it is MMO lite , no real community feeling or need

I tried EVE trial - And while EVE was a dream game for me ( I am great Elite fan , Freelancer fan ,scfi fan )  I couldnt help but find it incredibly boring ... and it is sad

I tried Ryzoom - which is by the way SCI-FI ( it is just a planet with low tech- and magic (yes you can have magic in scifi) > and while the game is simply amazing living world and superb community - i felt there is not much fun things to do ..

I played AO - Now people should know AO and Ryzoom are very much alike in gameplay and in community.AO is far from dying - but aswell not much fun things to do

Right now i am in dilema what to play

The thing about Eve is (in my opinion) you really have to take about 2+ months to get some of the as you say boring skills out of the way.. Once you worl out your learning and get yourself decided on what route you want to take i found the game is a heck of a lot of fun whether you run missions (solo or in a group) mine for money, manufacture, pvp, or whatever floats your boat.  But that being said I can understand how you might not want to put all of that time in just to get to a point where you 'start' to feel comfy in your character, but if you go on and do it, it will pay off in the long run.

AO would be your best bet, but as many have said its a rather small community compared to WOW but it offers everything that your looking for.. Just keep in mind it came out about alittle over a year before SWG so the graphics wont be the same, but if you can get over that it offers the complexity that you are looking for.

I feel you pain though, having a mature community is something I took for granted. I have played FPS games that have a better community then WOW, and thats saying a hell of a lot.

For some reason FOM comes to mind - In all fairness that is because it has *NO* content so all thats left is the community.

Eve & Ryzom are your best bets. Eve has good graphics and
objectives but is very boring minute-by-minute. Its either be ganked by
a 10-man gang or spend hours hunting someone 1-1 and it takes 6-12
months (literal time) to specialise in anythign worth getting. Ryzom
has slow combat so Im not huge on it but while I was playing it seemed
alright - good community of people who love the game, one too many
rpers for my liking "do not say the word xp it is forbidden" but
    otherwise its like swg.

DDO has a good community too although its numbers are dwindling. Im
playing that atm after jumping around a bit. Realisitically - you need
to find a game thats got fun activities in order to invoke voluntary
socialisation and ddo is all adventure based quests that last 10-100
minutes and has voicechat built in. Nobody wants to talk or socialise
in a grindfest like ryzom. I'd also suggest planetside - there are a
lot of xp whores but once you find a guild that uses TS you will make
    some good mates.

Eve is a bit of a scam because a lot of people that presume 0-0 is exciting constant pvp action and build their skills up figuring the fun will start after 2-3 months. It doesnt happen and youre well outside your free trial period by the time you realise lol.
