EDIT: Oh, is there any other way of getting up the command menu without the numericpad? As my friends laptop keyboard doesn't have one.

    About the menu,

    hit   "    alt -   "

    And then you can go to the config, misc 2, and set it to compact.

    And to clarify Rinic's answer to your other question, he means you can call up the command menu by pressing "alt" and "-" together. You can then use the command menu to set your keyboard to compact, which should make your life overall easier.

    If your mouse has a scroll wheel, clicking it gives you the main menu as well. I'm on a laptop as well, and that's usually what I use to access the main menu.
