Serious question that's been on my mind for some time now.

Why in gods name does Sony continue to ignore its player base and how much everyone thinks and knows this game is total garbage?

Ok, the game is complete crap, and they add in a "Restus event"? Like wtf is that? I don't understand why Sony just doesn't revert to like Publish 9 in like a few weeks or some crap. So whats the deal? Yeah, it's all about money, but you won't make money if you don't have subscribers so why is Sony so ****ing dumb? Instead of trying to fix the game and revert to the way the game was playable they don't say anything and just ignore the fact that their game is garbage.

Many of us ask the same question...

The only official answer is "SWG was bleeding subs so we had to do something".
I guess in SoE's point of view going back will only put them in the same position so why bather?

All I see if they do revert at least they will double their player base and that alone is a good thing /shrug

There are fooler people in the world than SOE. That's why SWG is still there with NGE after 7-8 months.

People still have hope about NGE "It will be good in the future!!" What future!? This game's been there for 3 years and it's in still beta, but people still pay it.

In this situation, we can't call SOE stupid, they are fooling people.

It's pretty disappointing that they felt the need to completely rewrite the game not once but twice to 'do something' about the problem.

When Sony and Lucas set out to create the NGE, we said, “How can we do this and make it similar to WoW?” We wanted it to be all about Iconic characters like Luke, combat and locking our players into a class. So we created a system that would restrict players and make all professions the same and there would be minimal gameplay around making that change. We definitely borrowed a lot of ideas from WoW that worked and figured out how to make them fit for SWG – Julio Torres (2005)

It's been downgraded from a premium quality brand leader to something that's available in the bargain bucket at 20p by SOE since it never knew how to handle it in the first place. It's basically a failed brand that's trying to cash in what it can before it dies or ports to console.

They look at numbers first and quality second at SOE (originally this game did have quality but the growth it needed wasn't there in the long run). Now it's numbers are all bundled into the stationpass so it's subs can be confused further by a bunch of totally irrelevant stats.

I just wish they had the balls to publish official SWG subs for the last 2 years. It would be business suicide but at least I could laugh my bollocks off.

Well if you skip the official statement the bunch of devs that took over from the original team didn't play the preCu game and didn't like it. They ALL want to work on a game they like to play. That's why we got the CU in the first place, combat levels and particle effects, very "fantasy" style... They didn't try to fix,, they changed it towards what they personally liked.

Then NGE happened when CU failed miserably. Same thing again, Jeff Freeman had  vision of a style of game HE wanted in Star Wars. The focus groups and questionnaires were just freaking fluff

This was all caused by holocrons and finding out how to be a jedi. If you follow MMORPGCHART you will see that the drop off in players coincides, almost to the day, the first holocrons dropped. If you played during that time then you would know that is when you started seeing more people leave.

I am willing to bet if they never dropped holos and never let the cat out of the bag about it being based entirely on professions you wouldnt have had the grind happen and less people would have left. SWG would not have been in the situation it is in now.

The original system, while not what they had promised, was beautiful. You had 5 random professions to master then a timer went off and you would unlock on some arbitrary event. The first person to ever unlock did it when they killed a piket. Of course after that, no piket was safe. Others unlocked after hitting a POI or getting a PVP kill. One did it after getting married in game.

Before holocrons dropped, no one knew how to unlock. We had literally no idea what was required. But we did know one thing for certain, it had nothing to do with professions. Boy were we surprised. If they had kept their mouths shut and not dropped holos I am willing to bet even to this day we wouldnt know how to unlock.

The grind is what started this game in its downfall. Before the grind people actually played the game to live in the Star Wars universe. Once the grind hit the race started and ceased being a "Live in the Star Wars universe" and became a "Who can unlock fastest" situation.

    To the OP:

You would think it would make perfect sense to do a roll back.  Subscriptions are dropping like flies.  Servers are dead. They tick off more people with every pub.  And thier reputation is in the garbage.  From a business stand point it only makes sense to go back to what worked to start making money again.

So why dont they?  We all know they made back ups of every single pub and have them Archived somewhere.  Why dont they just do a roll back instead of slowly giving back what they took away, but in a watered down altered version?  You would think it would be easier to just install one of the old publishes instead of reprogramming the entire game.

My conspiracy Theory:  They are not Allowed.  I tend to believe that the game design (the skill system ect.) is actually patented and owned by someone else other than SOE and now SOE no longer has access to it and legally can not use it.  Wich would explain why SOE is going through great pains to give people in the game back what they want, but in a different form.

As for the Who's, what's and why's...I dunno.   Maybe SOE sold the game design.  Maybe LA actually owned it and took it away.  I have no idea.  But its the only thing I can think of in my tiny little brain that makes any sense.

It could also be so they can generate more interest in it before announcing Pre-CU servers. Alot of games that offer older versions of itself, always wait til the right time.

I actually read somewhere that LEC had a basic design of what they thought the game should be like. Don't remeber the details but Koster&co built the preCU on that concept so you might have a point in saying SoE aren't allowed to use the classic design IF (a big IF) LEC has pulled the licence

Kaibigan34 hits a lot of great points.  I would that once subs started going away, SOE has generally responded (in sound business manner) with decreased support - after all, if it's making less money, most businesses don't reward the product with more support.  This means the opportunities to test code prior to release, fix post-release bugs, and develop new content were all diminished, and this trend continues.  It's a hard cycle to break, and they're locked in it.  I also think this decreased support is a significant part of the perceived "ignoring of the customer base".  Coupled with the loss of experienced devs, it can be very hard to meet player base wants when you have lessened support that itself lacks technical familiarity.

One of the questions I'd love to have answered and I've never seen it thus (although I may have missed it along the way) is about Hoth: for as long as I can remember, players have been asking for the planet Hoth to be included in SWG, most often as a PvP playground.  While not an avid PvPer myself, I've always thought this was a terrific idea - I'd go just to see the place.  Yet the devs instead gave the players Kashyyyk and Mustafar, done very nicely but not what the players asked for.  This example is to me "iconic" in how the SOE devs ignore the players requests/wishes.  And now they're making Restuss into the PvP playground instead of Hoth.  Hoth PvP requests have been posted ad nauseum in the official SOE forums for years, there is no way the devs don't know about this request, yet they've never realized it and given the players something they really want.  Just a crying shame, too, because it would have been a wonderful addition.

Ok, the game is complete crap, and they add in a "Restus event"? Like wtf is that? I don't understand why Sony just doesn't revert to like Publish 9 in like a few weeks or some crap. because if they can simplify the game mechanics down to the bare minimum they can shift it to Playstation and flog the dying horse some more that is SWG

It seems to be the current Sony policy. They are doing the same thing with the PS3, they did it with their portable digital music devices (which don't play MP3s...wtf), they out priced themselves from the low level studio video camera market (they used to be the cheapest braodcast quality cameras available), the KV-36H series VEGA TV was the last one worth buying (DRC WTF, yes lets lower resolutions on a HDTV).

Have you looked into the Square-Enix line up lately? Their best products are for Xbox, computer and Nintendo platforms.

Sony is flying blind or ignoring the customer base in all areas now. If they continue in that direction they won't be around as a major electronics power much longer.

Hey thats pretty interesting.  Lets have some fun with that, shall we?

If I remember correctly, LA was due to re-evaluate the contract with SOE in Feb (?) 05.  So lets start there..

--Feb 05, LA pulls its license from SOE and tells SOE where to go with directions and a map.

--SOE stands to lose an entire MMO and begins negotiations (Begging, pleading, crying, whatever).

--LA agrees to let SOE keep the SWG graphics, and game name but wants to take the game design and walk.

--LA gives SOE till the end of the year to come up with thier own game design

--SOE is in a scramble to create a new game with new core mechanics

--November 05.  NGE goes live as a very basic stripped down incomplete MMO.

--People beg for Classic servers, but SOE say that 'Technically' they can not.  And they are right.  They cant because LA walked off with the game design and they are building a new one from scratch.

Ah but wait!  The Plot thickens!

--2005 ends with drastic changes to the core game mechanics of SWG

--2006 starts with LA joining forces with another MMO developer on a secret project who just so happens to have recruited almost the entire original Dev team from the original SWG team.....hmmm

LOL That was fun.  My very first "Conspiracy" post.   I know its all crap, but everyone else is doing it, so Im just trying to fit in .   How'd I do?
