Before I had quit WOW,I'd choose the Horde over Alliance any day.
Playing Alliance means the generic human class, the generic tall ELF class and the short dwarf class. Only difference is that they then included the 'crazy' gnomes, then people started making silly videos about gnomes, and thus gnomes became the only reason for playing Alliance. Otherwise, all generic and apparently 'underpowered' racially. Unless of course you're willing to hit 60 on a paladin.
The Horde; not just a boring mesh of green, ugly types. Apart from the orcs,we have the impressive Tauren and Forsaken models. A sense of ugliness, yet some kind of atmosphere about it. Also,I'll admit I liked the Undead racials, but this was LONG LONG before I knew their PvP value. And I had been playing a variety of other classes before then.
Admittingly though, the one thing that made WOW stand out for me,beyond the graphics,well-made combat system and excellent PvE,is the way they made the 'rogue' class. It REALLY felt like a rogue; 75% of time I desired to be in stealth, lurking up to an unsuspecting human warrior and preparing to unleash deuce dagger hell on him. Except that warriors' impressive resistance to 4-figure damage attacks made me fear the warrior. Rogues couldn't beat a good warrior; but we could slam down our sneaky advantage on the rest. Likewise, hunters were nicely designed as the ANTI-rogue class. But when I played my rogue,I was sneaking around all the time,I was in a 'world of my own'; just me,the victim and any other rogues in the area.
And Undead Horde rogues seemed to be the best lookers for that, maybe on par with the night elf rogues. Also,I felt the Horde had the slightly more mature community.
Alliance here, I can't stand horde toons, then again I can't stand Alliance BGs. I just don't like the newbie zones when I make a horde toon, only area I like is the undead area, but I'm not crazy about the looks of undead characters. Taurens have a nice starting area to, but they move too slow for me especially with thier wide open spaced areas they start in. I don't know really, both sides have thier ups and downs for me so I'm switching alot between both...
When I first got the game, I immediately made alliance due to the fact that I thought they were the "good guys" based on their appearance. As I was drawn into reading some Warcraft lore, I soon experimented with the horde. From then on, I started to appreciate that sly wickedness of the Undead, and it has become my favorite race ever since.
As for the dilemma of alliance/horde, I recommend going alliance first, as leveling/grinding was alot more fun Alliance-side.

i agree that alliance side is much more interesting for leveling. i found that leveling in the barrens until level 20+ way too repetitive, where as alliance get a variety of more places to grind.
Played Alliance beta/release 4 month later Horde and well I'm still playing horde. The only thing I envy about the Alliance is Ironforge and Stormwind such beauty.
If I had to choose again, Horde
(wonder when the management page will be up again, I want back!)
Sorry carebears, the hoard actually had some richer content and players imo, and i played both sides pretty extensively. Why play a puny ugly elf, dwarf, gnome, human when you could be an Orc, a Troll, an Undead, or a Tauren. All the Horde models looked better... man I loved Zoknathura (orc shammy) so hawt
I prefer horde, cause pretty-perfect alliance irritates me. Unfortunately my main is alliance and I just don't have the patience to develop a whole new char from scratch
