General DAOC questions

CarazordCarazord Member UncommonPosts: 23
My friend used to play DAOC (from release until just after the ToA expansion) but I've never played before and we've come up with some questions that hopefully ya'll can answer:

1)  If we are going to pay on a Classic server, what would we need to buy?  Any expansions or the original CD, what exactly?

2)  Is the leveling still relatively fast (pre-ToA) or is it more difficult (I read in the FAQ that post-ToA it's much harder to level, is this true on a classic server?

3)  Are expansion classes playable on the classic servers?

4)  Is the rvr map the oldschool one or the new one?

Thanks in advance.

    1.  You need to buy the Epic edition.  Technically you could just download the free trial, but you are going to want the last two expansions.  The basic game consists of the original game, si, and ToA.  Although if you are on the classic servers you do not need to install ToA.

    2.  I think you read something wrong in the FAQ (or i wrote it wrong I will need to check that) - leveling requires less than 10% of the time it used to take to get to level 50.

    3.  All expansion races and classes are playable on the classic servers.

    4.  I really hate the name "classic."  There is nothing classic about it.  It is simply a server type without ToA zones, abilities, artifacts, etc.  There is also restrictions on the distance buffs work to discourage buffbots.  So, to answer your question, it is the New Frontiers and not the old one.  However, they just added a level 45-49 BG that is open field with mile gates like Old Emain was.

Still a good game I suggest it. Lot of good players returning to the game.

Thanks a ton for the responses thus far!  We both downloaded the 14-day
trial last night and will be giving it a try tonight after work.

    As a followup question:

(Again, assuming we're playing a "classic" server): How many hours
would you estimate it would take to hit level 50 for two people who
    know what they're doing?

    Thanks again

Hey Carazord I also just started but there is no one to group with. Mind if I tag along with you and your friend?

What server are you planning to play and what timezone are you in?

    Edit:

I see you're in the US, never mind. ;)

It will depend on the classes you play and how you want to level.  Without Catcombs you will be missing out on the best zones to level in.  You will also be missing out on the quests that give you the most XP.  So, you will be killing mobs (probably in SI) or doing kill tasks.  It has been a long time since I have leveled this way.  I would say around 192 hours in game played?

It also depends on if you go to the battlegrounds or not.  If you are interesting in level 50 RvR, then you really should go to the BG's.  If not you will be behind in realm points by a lot.  It does not take that long to get RR2 in the BGs.  Further, you can end up with some good XP to level with killing other players.

I downloaded the free trial as well. I haven't started playing it, but will I have fun from the get-go? Or will I have to hit a certain level before I start having fun.

Also, I've played a healer in just about every mmorpg I've tried. I'd like to leave the healing class behind. What classes does anyone suggest for someone who doesn't mind grouping - but will have to play solo sometimes?

What is the most populated server? Or will the trial just plunk me down in one of its own choosing?

Any advice you can give me will be appreciated!

Are catacombs something that is unavailable on a "classic" server?

Is it still possible to gain levels in the Battle Ground? i remember for a time you could enter the BG at level 1 and buy a ballista or something and kill people in 1 hit gaining a level instantly, is this still possible?

what we used to do was level up to the highest lvl of each bracket for the bg zone, like lvl 24 of the (20-24) then get whatever max realm lvl you could  in that zone before leveling up to the next highest bracket.

The only expansion unavailable on the "classic" servers is ToA.

So, just to be clear, we would be able to enter these "catacombs" where the better XP is while playing on a classic server if we bought the game edition that gives you all expansions?

Edit:  by the game edition that gives you all expansions i mean the "gold edition" or whatever mentioned above.

Sorry to ask so many questions but I'm trying to combine a bunch of ppl's responses with the fact that I've never played before.

well, to get the catacombs zones, you could just get the trial and then get the catacombs expansion, only part you'll miss out on is the darkness rising expansion, which is a few good quests from 30-49, and some new skills to pick up at 50.
The catacombs expansion includes the single fastest levelling experience outside of power-levelling, that is instance tasks. You form a group or go in solo, and get a private dungeon, tailored to your level. you complete the task in there, you get a big experience reward.
I personally think they went too far with it, but that's just me, fact remains you can level incredibly quick, especially if you can come up with a duo or something that is very good at managing down-time
    hope this helps

You can get to Catacombs on the Classic server.  Why I said you would not be able to play it is because you are only on the free trial.  You will need to purcahse the expansion in order to have access to it.  You can do this via a download, or simply go pick up the Epic edition.

That does help quite a bit thank you.  Is the catacombs something I would go to at a certain level or can I go there at level 1 for uber xp?  I'm asking this because if, let's say, I couldn't go there until level 30... I could use my 2 week trial leveling up to this point and then buy the gold edition or whatever to have access to everything if I feel like the game is fun.

Catacombs is from level 1-50.  It has pretty Uber XP.  XP comes really easy the first few levels so it does not matter.  But to give you an idea, at level 1 you will need to kill 10 things to get to level 2.  You could get to level 2 by doing Cats quests which would take 2 quests.  By the time you do the quests you could have killed ten mobs.  But, once you have a few levels the quests are a much quicker way to level.

The Cats mobs give a lot better XP.  The quests give a lot better XP.  The higher your level, the more XP it takes, and the longer it takes to reach a level.  So, those quests become very important for cutting down your leveling time as you progress through levels.

If you are going to wait on the Epic, you can do kill tasks.  Go to a named guard in towns (starting with the starter town).  Click on him and then hit enter.  Type task.  He will then tell you to go kill a mob.  After you kill it return to him for some nice XP.

Yes you can go to the BG's starting at level 1.  I am not sure if anyone is on them before level 20.  If there are, you will find them on the Classic servers.  You can level up completly in the BG from level 1-50 in theory.  The problem is that even if there are people to kill, the more often a person is killed the less XP you get for them.
