is there much for a casual gamer in EVE Online

Eve is the one game that I have looked at over and over again, but never tried.

To be honest, I don't know why, as it seems to tick all of the right boxes for me..space combat, small scale skirmish, large scale conflict etc. But is it a game I can get into enough to enjoy. I consider myself to be a casual, albeit committed mmo gamer, and it's the casual part that stops me getting into eve.

The quality of the game is not in question, I know it's a great game, but is it just too epic for someone like me. Another thread compared Eve to Guild Wars, and I've been playing GW for months and gained much enjoyment from it, but you can just a quick 30 minutes session if you want to and actually achieve something. I suppose you could say it's shallow in comparison to Eve.

You see my point though. Even a trial period would only give a feel for the game and it's mechanics, which I'm sure will be excellent, but can a casual novice like me get enough from it.

It certainly can.  I've been playing on and off for about 3 years.  My work schedule is too busy to "grind" anything more than coffee.  Besides the fact I like I can train skills when I'm not even playing.  I like being able to pick up and do whatever I like when I have time.  When a particular skill is going to be a very long training peroid (say 40 days), I usually cancel my account with that skill training, and then come back when I know its done, and play again.  Sure I'll never have a zilllion dollars, but it fits in my schedule, which is the most important aspect for me.

There is but much of it is empire stuff. If you are casual and want to pvp it may be difficult to sustain yourself.

If your not really interested in the PVP then there quite a bit you can do:
    • missions
    • hunting rats
    • mining
    • trading

If there is a game that is excellent for the casual gamer, then it's EVE. Because of it's unique skill training system you are not required to grind all the time for skills and character levels (the latter doesnt exist in EVE). The time to aquire a new skill level is dependend on your attributes, is measured in real-time, and does continue while not logged off. There are a lot of family people playing EVE, simply for this fact. They have their lives, can't (don't want) devote all of it to a game, yet still can stay competetive. The only big difference is the amount of wealth you will have, for which you need to be online ofc.
One thing though. Managing your skills in the first tstages and learning the game will take up more time in the first one to three weeks.

Comparing EVE to GW is wrong on several levels, but I dont want to go deeper than that. Try the Trial. Ask your questions (which will come) here, the EVE boards, or in the Newbie Channels in-game. And then decide if the game is for you. That is the best advice you can get here.

I think it really all depends on who you are.  I, personally, find this game very casual friendly.  These days though, I've been able to invest lots more time into the game.  Of course, it wouldn't have been as profitable had I not been able to keep "playing" when I didn't have time to play.  I had about a 3 month gap where I could not play Eve at all.  I had no internet at my home.  So, all I could do was log on at work and change my skills.  Of course, I was able to train up to large railgun specialization, and gain a level on my Gallente Battleship skill as well.  Now, it takes gameplay to get good in this game, but you don't need to grind the game out in order to succeed.  In fact, tonight I will be mining and watching the FireFly TV series while I do it.  That is as casual as they come in my opinion.  Not to mention, when I go to sleep tonight, I'll be leaving my hauler there to AFK mine, so that I can prosper even while I'm sleeping.  And, that is just the mining aspect of it.  Of course, you can't AFK mine in ever system, and actual good PvP experience is going to come from you playing the game.  But, you can still accomplish things even with a busy schedule... just don't expect them to happen as fast as they would in other games.  Eve is difficult; it's just casual friendly.

We can agree to disagree, or we can bicker constantly... either way, I'm right.
