Will you support a Virtual Reality MMOG?

I'd like to hear from those of you who would like to see a Virtual Reality MMOG become a reality. We have everything neccessary, in terms of technology, to make it happen right now! The only thing missing is the support of gamers. Let's be honest; a VR Anarchy Online 2 or a VR Age of Conan would be the cats ass! Am I right?

    That might be cool.

I'd love to play an MMO in VR for the reason that exploring would feel much more of a first-hand experience. But although immersion would increase, I think I'd find it difficult to roleplay - and I can't play an MMO without RP.

If you look to see what virtual reality means, it basically means to use hardware to get the player more intouch with the game. we have actually been doing it for years via speakers and sound. I have done a basic ccourse in VR and have learnt that you can purchase glass's which have 2 LCD montiors on them, you can wear these to play the game, even though its not full on VR where you move your arm and the game character moves its still close.

these glass's can be used in any game out now since it simply acts as a monitor. Some also come with speakers

Agreed. It'll feel more real life and harder to RP like he said.

    But i support it :D

I saw on a Television show that they've already made an MMO in VR concept.

You climb in this giant ball *that looks cage like* and then you put a headset on wich shows you the game..and everything from there-on is you..to move you run in the ball and the ball turns..they havn't quite worked out a stoping system though.

And an attacking system etc is yet to be made for it..but movement was 70% fine. just gotta work on stopping and turning.

And where can I get a hold of these glasses?

It would be something new, would be nice, having played virtual games at arcades before, it would be cool adding it to an online game.

yeah problem would be is it would be nice to have all players wearing such a device, however with the cost of them it would be very hard to do this. Unless offering the device and giving 2 months free access to the game (which wouldnt affect sales to much for big mmos)

I dunno, vr is first person. There really isnt a point in wearing the vr visor on your head when you can just look at the screen. Might as well just play first person shooters like DooM
  • The reason why VR gear is so expensive ATM is because there isn't  sufficient consumer support to drive down prices. It's highly likely that both Sony and Nintendo are working on VR systems right now and we'll prolly see the affordable VR systems 'bout 2010-12.

Virtual Reality games don't have to be first person...why would they? I can easily envision a VR third person MMOG, not to mention a VR sim city or a VR Civilization.

  • I just found this little tidbit here.

    Closer and closer...

So we have the tech now? but look at the cost.... The link above was $900! that crazy!.... How would people spend millions on a mmorpg for the few people who would pay 900 for just a headset! All you would have is crappy mmorpgs with little content.. Sadly till you show me some neat VR stuff we are far from a VR MMOG!

First off you need a mainstream VR game starting off with a FPS then a RPG one before any company would invest in million dollar VR mmog.

EDIT: BTW we still don't have the sever technology for all the packets that been sending back and forth now... Look at WoW servers! They are crashing left and right!

I would support this if I had the kind of cash to spend on the actual thing itself, considering the new consoles these days are $400+. I mean come on guys a virtual reality game would cost upwards of $800.

Sounds very interesting though, the entire reason I play fantasy RPGs is to feel as though I am part of the world.

Damn I hate being broke :D

You seem to be confused Devalon, the question was "do you support the development of a VR MMOG?".  There's no need to read a bunch of extra things into it...it's a very simple yes or no question!

secondly, We do have the server technology  and will have VDSL-2 and the DOCSIS 3.0 broadband connections very shortly...add the power of the PS3 and you have more than enough power to handle the job.

Hahaha! That thing looks HEAVY! hehe, and it's so expensive that they won't give the price!

@xxxmonkxxx: Yeah it's gonna be kinda expensive at first but when the demand goes up prices will come way down. So don't be too discouraged, it's definitly gonna happen...just a matter of when!

OOOH that seems like a very nice idea. But my problem with that is the costs. All the equipment will cost very much, and since it could be a one company copyright thing, everything could be that more expensive.

Other problems I have thought about include playing too long. Im sure games like this use up a lot of your energy mentally and possibly physically if you are so addicted that you dont ever get up. (not that this is very likely)

I believe that there is already something like this in europe. Basically, you go to this specially build facility and put on their equipment and you complete missions, such as first person shooting and missions (kinda like missions a pollice person would go on). I saw this in the magazine but im not not sure which, they were also saying that they would make more facilities so that people around the world could play.

If it was a at home type of thing, I would worry about the lag and everyones connection to the internet/ to each other!

I'm sorry im horrible at quoting so here what he said.

"We have everything neccessary, in terms of technology, to make it happen right now!"

I'm sure the PS3 is more then enough to handle the proccessing power but with a $500 dollar system + other umm devices it still won't be mainstream.

Also What I read was about bandwidth, nothing todo with the power of the servers.

Anyway With the PS3 coming out soon we should be seeing some amazing games being develope. just maybe we would see a HD TV headset that would fry your eyes out coming around the corner...

BTW I awnser the question with the poll.... I guess my awsner wasnt that clear.... If anything I say is even clear what im trying to say is no. It would just be a costly VR wannabe mmorpg shooter that all you do is run around.

Edit: Only way I can see a VR games happening NOW  if someone made a business out of it like arcades... You go there and pay by the hour or something. Im sure it be done in korea becuase of all the cafe players there.

You could see a VR shooter at some fairs but they are like 5bucks for 5min... crazy

I haven't seen any Virtual Reality single player games, and you're talking about a VR MMO? Let's walk before we can run.

Fact of the matter is, even if you could do it, the stuff you'd need would make it ridiculously expensive. Not exactly appealing for a massively multiplayer game.

Maybe in 20 years, but not now. Companies are having a hard enough time as it is making decent regular MMOs, I can't see a VR MMO.
