Is trader/crafter only viable in Eve?

I like to create a char for the sole purpose of in game trading. I am mostly fascinated by the economics and do not have interest in fighting or PvP. Is this a viable option in long term? Is it possible to enjoy Eve without being a fighter at all?

    Oh hell yes!!

This is the only mmorpg (that im aware of) where such a thing is possible.  Yea you can trade and craft in other games - but not without totally ignoring the combat aspects of the game.

I'd still recommend you do the tutorial and learn the most basic aspects of mining and combat..  but only so you know.  Additionally, if you decide to go hauling - its not always a safe business.  You should be aware of how to protect yourself from pirates.

Of course you can always pay others to do the hauling for you.  Items can only be transferred across space by human intervention - but this doesnt have to be done personally.. you can setup courier missions for other players to pickup and accept.  Course you have to pay the right price for the size of cargo + distance or nobody will do it.

The problem is of course finding a niche market nobody else has discovered.  You may find it fustrating at first since you wont have the capital to make huge investments and wont have the ship to carry much either.  Start small - think big and do your research.. no doubt youll spot something.  Get EVE maps from ombey as well to understand how the universe is divided up into regions.

As for long term viability - no doubt about it it is viable, you can move into 0.0 space where the economy is totally and completely player driven.

Just so you know EVE's economics are without a doubt the most complex and absorbing of any mmorpg.  Nothing else comes close.  Hell, nothing else even approaches the horizon.

Its very viable, but not without risks. Make sure you understand what the risks are and how to negate them.

This is a very viable option and a vast number of player are doing this as we speak, if i where u i'd go into the eve-online forums and look in the trade section "Market descussion" there is a good palce to find guides and tutorials on how to understand the market and also a good palce to get tips of possible market changes. wish you the best of luck, me i'm gonna go back to killing people :)

Most definately. Players who specalize in trading can really make cash fast once they learn the trade. It is a full blown character development path.

there are a few things you need to know before becoming a trader in eve.

it's dangerous traveling in 0.4 or lower sec space without insta's(bookmarks that you warp to to make your ship come out of warp ontop of or very close to the gate so you don't waste the time moving the 15km's the autopilot brings you in at.

most of the really profitable goods are gone within an hr of the games daily reboot(named the DT) when the DT happens all the trading routes are refilled and traders know this all to well.

if your going to make items, it's best to do 3 things.

    1. train up the "production effency" skill, as the higher that skill is, the less minerals you will need to build an item.

2.either invest in a BPO(blueprint orginal, a factory in eve needs a BPO + minerals to make items) and research it. or buy a BPC(blueprint copy) with an ME(mineral effenacy) higher than 30(after ME30 the gain's from having more ME lvl's isn't really noticable)

    3. find a market for the item before you make it. look though the market's in any new region you go though and see if there's a gap that your wares can be sold in. failing that it's always good to just sell your good's in a high pop system like the new player 1.0 systems where the new players 1st start out in the game.

    hope it helps you out

You will never avoid PvP in Eve.  It's in everything.  Also, the more money you'd like to make, the farther out in to dangerous space you must travel.  In low-sec, people like me will be hunting you.  Don't take it personal though...

We can agree to disagree, or we can bicker constantly... either way, I'm right.

Actually you dont need to go into 0.0 to make cash trading/manufacturing.

And yes this is a big 60% part of eve.

PvP people will disagree with the 60% part but you will see what i mean when you have studied the market system

Eve is THE game for non-combat people. No other game matches its player run economy.
