A really good game!
It is very original, and the immense possiblities shine right throught to the free starter island! Everything about its combat, harvesting, crafting, and interaction with others is completely original and revolutionary.
it has also done something that I ahave never seen any other game accomplish. It requires a lot of thinking, but also moves fast enough for the player to enjoy the mix.
WoW has the speed, but the outcomes are easy to calculate. SoR has Pro's and Con's to every action, so it makes you think before you do.
In example, I wanted to level my crafting so I thought 'hey, this plan seems pretty good, but it is at the expense of 30 skill points and it may not be the easiest thing to pull off. BUT, if I do pull it off, I will get great XP and maybe get some skill points back.'
This mix of speed and thought really grasped me, and if my computer could run it better I would probably jump on the P2P.
All hail (in my opinion!) the only REAL contender to WoW's throne!

Yep, SoR is an awesome game, i played it quite a while back but the lack of people playing got to me. I think im going to give it another go and hopefully alot more people are playing now, it seems like more and more are each time i check back with it.

I will not participate in this discussion as I am a ryzom fanboi
.............ryzom rocks
uhm too late
Does anyone have suggestions about what to do in SoR? Right now I pretty much just kill mobs outside of town and that's about it (i'm not much of a crafter). Like I said I want to like SoR, but I'm having a hard time.
I really enjoyed most of Ryzom at launch, but the game moved away from the gameplay that I found appealing. I still think the skill system is one of the best, if not the best around, the world is interesting, the dynamic wildlife reminds me of one of the better aspects of the old SWG, and I love the artwork. That said, I've always been more of a "solo" player when I go adventuring, and I've never enjoyed any form of pvp; the first of those playstyles has been gradually phased out of the game (at least the later stages of it), and the second was rather suddenly dropped in.
The infamous "Patch 1" was really the beginning of the end for me, though I did stick around for a month or two after it launched to see how things played out. I've returned from time to time with free trials to check up on it, and it's still a fine game- just a very different game from the one I had fun with. "Game experience may change during online play," as they say, and that has certainly been true for Ryzom. It's a game with a lot going for it, but it dropped me off at the corner and just kept on moving. I'm certainly happy that people seem to enjoy the current version even if I don't, though. There just aren't enough games with Ryzom's complexity or intricacy these days, and the market would be a lesser place if Nevrax failed in their attempt to change that.
I so really wanted to love SoR, I even subscribed beacause I enjoyed the "Freshness" it provided. However it did not take long for boredome to set in. I found it monotomous. other than endless grinding on mobs and maybe a bit of harvesting now and again there wasnt much more.
People say to to me that the content comes from my imagination. Well, yea this is ok but I do prefer to have some game content to help us along. For instance, I love the fact that in SWG you can decorate your home with cool loot, furniture etc. Maybe whrn Ryzom Ring comes I will take another look.
It is even fun when you are lost amongst the tents looking for the Craft Trainer .... right Tuutob ?
If there are any WoW players who don't understand why people sneer at how easy WoW is they should check out the Free Trial ( they wont even ask for your card details ) .
Not only do you have to decide for yourself what stats your crafted items have ( depends on the materials you use ) but you can even tweak your attacks/spells etc for more range, more damage etc etc.
Top game
However technical reasons made me uninstall. 6 gig install is just too much for me. The loading time is inmense. And there are some resolution problems which probably couldv been solved.
I had no idea it was taking so much space. Allmost 9 Gig on my HD.
It's not a prob for me, I still have almost 200 Gig free but I can see it being to much for a lot of people

Huh?? It´s about 5 on my HD. Can it be that you´ve been taking LOTS of tga. Screenshots lately?
Those take up a massive amount of Diskspace
Anyway, for all those who are interested. Look at some of the great footage on my site and have Fun!!

Do you dare to adapt?
at first I thought it was the game itself that had bad graphics.. Now
i've come to the conclusion it's my darn PC ...
Anyway, i might join this game at the end of the year (hey a lifelong trial!) when i get my new pc.
I decide who lives or who dies!
This is truly the problem that many people have with SoR. You can do anything you want, you just need to set yourself on a mission. If you want to be a tour guide for new folks, and really just get them lost, do that. If you want to make the uber group that cleans the rootball of mobs claiming the most XP possible, you can lead that. If you want to have someone tell you what to do, hollar in region and see what they come up with.
Talk just briefly in character and see what people come up with, the world and it's homins are very imaginative.
It can be trying at times though in that regard, I must agree. Someone said get in with a guild, and this is always good, becuase then you have some folks that you associate with daily (or however often you play) and you can always ask what they are doing, etc.
Fighting in SoR does not have to be go camp in spot X and kill beast Y. You can head off on an adventure through the world killing things as you go, and see the world. If you take a few missions on your way, it gives you a purpose, and you gain some extra out of doing what you wanted to do anyway.
Yep
i think ryzon blows... i dont like their whole weird ambients, and i have played hundred of mmorpgs and this is the game i uninstalled faster played for 1 min then quit and uninstall
On the other hand given your other post about how you want a full-gank environment, I don't think ryzom would've been for you anyway... it's a consent-based PVP system.
C
if you gave everything in life one minute i think u'd be in trouble.
Your deeply insightfull post ( Hundreds of MMORPG's, really ? and you lasted a full minute, gosh. ) has done more to reinforce the stereotype of "l33T d00D looz0R" than any I've seen in quite some time.
Looks like you picked an excelent name for yourself though
I've been playing SoR & WoW now and again since launch and both are great games.
Whereas WoW is stuck in the lvl 60 (soon 70) instance grind bottleneck, Ryzom has plenty of room to expand if Nevrax could only fall back a little to the original Cohen's vision of the game.
In fact Ryzom coul be the king of mmo's if Nevrax finally implemented.. more diversity :
--- More skill trees like
- Architect, Carpenter ( with player housing )
- Hairdresser/barber (with player shops)
- Mechanic ( with player vehicles)
- Tamer (pets)
- cook, painter, sculptor, bounty hunter, stealther, diver, tailor, Alchemist, musician etc..
--- More dimensions
- Canopy
- underwater
- underground (PR is not claustrophobic enough )
--- Much more rites (lore quests-stories)
All this is probably too much work for Nevrax but the core mechanic of SoR would allow these add ons without unbalancing the rest of the game.
More diversity.. and SoR would knock WoW down !

Good post here. If Nevrax had stuck to the "vision" they'd had during beta they'd have me and hundreds of other players who left during patch 1. Dynamic raid encounters, hundreds of rite (quest content), a complex political and religious conflict (instead of the black/white religious PvP conflict they have now), and the sidelining of PvP as something that was totally optional.
Nevrax seems to have a new and completely different vision of what they want to do with SoR from what they advertised during beta and unfortunately that doesn't sell with most of their potential customers because they've never come close to regaining a semblance of population they had before Patch 1 nor have they even made efforts I can see to get old players to come back. The conceptual Ryzom was one of the best games ever but Nevrax has lost that vision sadly and if it hasn't come back in these almost 2 years then I doubt it ever will.

yepp, big fan here too so then I'm not gonna write
anything much
*smiles* but yepp. love my Atys, ofc could be better but it aint WoW
Anyone that played the game for 1 min can't really have put alot of effort to it, and if the sound is so bad, why not turn it off? but ah well, your loss, Ryzom isn't for everybody, nor is any game I think.
*hugs from lil me*
*Brain down for upgrade, don't try to understand my logic, I don't...*
totaly full of fan boys i see them posting all over this website any chance they get ow try sor its the best.
