Too late to get into DAOC?

Well honestly I never even looked at DAoC in all my years of online gaming.  Well after giving up on WoW (FFS too easy) and FFXI (toooooo sloowwwwww) I have been looking around.

After not being able to get my fix from a F2P game I once again started to look at p2p games.  I know DAoC is 5 years old and all, and heard reports that the low level crowd is dead, is it too late for me to get into it? I am downloading the trail now 83% done and was just curious at what awaits me?

Thanks in advance.

I also played WOW since the beginning, but I was a DAOC veteran and I am glad to be back.

    No not too late.

The game is FUN, but it picks up only after lvl 24+. Because thats when PvP starts to be real fun.
Go on the Gareth server thats where most of the population is.
Do not be discouraged by the outdated graphics there are ppl that still play UO to this day.

Definitely not too late, give the trial a shot, or even better, pick up a copy of the Epic Edition, should be able to find it in most places for ~$20 and you get everything the game has to offer that has been released so far with 30 free days instead of 14.

I'm overwhelmed with the class choices. Is there anywhere I can read up on them?

Well if you are looking for something less easy than WoW, but faster than FFXI, then maybe DAOC is for you.  It is an older game, so do not expect the hand holding you get from WoW at the begining.  Feel free to ask questions in and out of the game until you get oriented.

If you are having problems decidiing on a class, casters tend to be the quickest and easiest to learn to play.

Learning a new game has never been a problem for me.  I mean FFXI was jsut about "Heres a city, good luck."  But it helps with the immersion factor, feeling lost in a land your not used to. idk, 2nd Trial Download was corrupt... so I may just pick up epic edition later @ walmart if they have it

You are like me in enjoying exploring and not knowing what is around the corner.  Those were some of my best times with DAOC is when I had no idea where I was, where I was going, and what way to walk without getting killed :P  I like the expansions that was as well.  I get to see all the new content added.

Walmart, when I have looked, seems to be the most reliable source to get DAOC.

It#s never to late to start. Look for a friendly guild. In the first days DAoC was not so easy to play. But now they have changed so many things, so it's a lot easyer to level up. PvP/RvR is the best in all MMORPG's. You have a lot of fun in the BG's (small RvR). That's what I think. :)

  • DaoC is actually an excellent game to get into even after all this time. They have continously made it easier for new players to enter the game; nowadays getting to max-level is easy, and you can play on a "classic" server without Trial of Atlantis which means that the worst equipment-grinding is removed (and even that is pretty easy to get through nowadays if you chose to play on a regular server). I have played DaoC off and on throughout the years and it has always been an easy transition when you chose to start playing again, even if you happened to sell all your accounts last time you quit

There are lots of new players (and alts) starting out on Gareth these days so you will not be alone. If you can afford the Epic edition (around $20) I strongly recommend it for improved graphics, ALL of the expansions (Catacombs is useful for fast levelling), access to all classes (like the popular Valkyrie and Vampiir) and the first 30 days are included (normally $15/month).

At level 8 or 9, I recommend heading into the Lion's Den (battleground) to get your first taste of RvR. Actually, it's for level 5-9 but, if you're a new player, you might find it frustrating (=die too often) at lower levels. At levels 20-24, do not miss Thidranki, probably the most active battleground. Some people turn off XP at level 24 just so they can stay in Thidranki forever

The real RvR, taking keeps and relics, starts at 50 but you can still have RvR experiences at lower levels in the frontier, battlegrounds (like Thidranki) or RvR dungeons (like Darkness Falls) -- just watch out for purple-conned invaders!

ps. Once you select a server and realm you cannot create a new character of a different realm on that server --so chose wisely!

Also make sure what cluster you belong to once you choose a realm in a cluster you are stuck in that realm on all the servers in that cluster unless you had char in the other realms pre clusterin

I just got back into it after a one year hiatus.  Man - three nights in a row with less than 3 hours sleep.

Man it's fun.  I'm on the classic server with the really high population, and to me

it's like when it first started.

I would say it is not too late.  It's always what you make of it.
