I am just getting started and would like some advice on character creation.

I would like to be able to use weapons and cast spells. i.e. I don't want to just be a "mage" or just a "fighter". What class lets you do both? What are some good stats for that type of character, too?

I think I got it sorted out. The only other MMORPG I have played is EVE, so it is quite a big change. Very pretty graphics.

I think the thief class fits your description, for I seem to recall they can both use short-range daggers and long-range throwing stars EFFECTIVELY.

I'd look up a guide for each class from help sites, but I think each class goes like this:

Warrior= STR main, DEX secondary. (mainly melee but some variations at 3rd job can cast some spells)

Archer= DEX main, LUCK second. (mostly long-range,but very powerful. Reputed to be as annoying a KS'er/good class as the mage, minus the mana reliance.)

Mage= INT main, DEX second. (these are reputed to be the best class in-game. Slow start leads to some massive KS'ing moves, allegedly. Mana pot whores of course.)

Thief= LUK main, DEX second. (they have some good long-range moves and can 'sneak' past enemies for short periods.)

I dunno much about any class except the warrior > spearman > dragon knight route I'm taking, and I'm following a guide for that.

What is the level cap in this game (if there is one)? I am currently at level 8 and need to decide how to focus my points.

EDIT: The cap, if it exists, appears to be very high (at least level 85)

So far, so good. I am finding this game to be fun and well designed. I was in high school in the late '80s / early '90's... the 2D side scroll is a nice, familiar, change of pace. Especially with graphics as pretty as these.

Use your skill points according to what the equipment you want requires if you have any spare points i would use them either hp or just add them to dex jst so you can get that little bit better.

The highest level currently in existence is a level 151. And a warrior.

    Ok, here's the deal.

For your beginning stats, it all depends on what you want to be. If you want to be a warrior, Str- X Dex- X Luk- 4 or 5 and INT - 4 or 5. X can be any number, just make sure your luk and int are either 4 or 5.

For a bowman get the same thing as a warrior.

    For theifs get Str- 4 or 5    Dex- X    Luk - X     INT- 4 or 5.

    For a magician get Str- 4 or 5     Dex - 4 or 5    Luk - X    INT- X

Now here's the builds. For Warriors every level you'll want to keep your Dex 2x your level. For example level 10- 20 dex. level 20 - 40 dex, level 30 - 60 dex and so on. Just add the rest of your stats to STR.

For Bowman You'll want to keep your STR 5 points above your level. Ex. Level 10 - 15 str. Level 20 - 25 str ect.   Add the rest of your stats to Dex/

For Theifs you want 2x your level of dex just like warriors except this time add the rest to luk. (That build may only be for Sin's, but thats the only build I know lol)

And Last for magicians, Have 3 above your level of luk (ex. level 10- 13 luk, level 20 - 23 luk) and then put the rest onto intelligence.

Oh, and as to what to chose. If you like dealing alot of damage but don't like ranged attack, choose a warrior. If you like ranged attacks and don't like close attacks, chose a bowman. If you can't decide between those two, choose a theif. If you like having lots of MP and dealing lots of damage, chose a Mage (Fire/Poison or Ice/Lit) And if you like never dying, chose a cleric (mage 2nd job)

Alright, well thats for stats. Just please don't get me started on skills.

A mixture between a warrior and mage...
your best bet would be a Page...which is one of three second job adv. for a warrior...
once you're a page...and you get to level 70, you'll get your third job adv. as a white knight...then you'll have elemental damage such as fire.
So yea, that's sorta a melee mage.
