I enjoyed DAOC for a few years and now I have some extra time again was thinking of playing again for a while. Then I found out that Mythic sold out to EA... thats to bad I was looking forward to Warhammer online as well. I will never buy another EA mmorpg. They cancelled Earth and Beyond just when they were starting to get the game right. I will never invest any of my liesure time in anything EA again.
What does everyone else think?

I recently read a article I believe it was from an editor at Mythic or some such title and she said nothing is changing at Mythic except the business cards. I am playing DAOC again after being away and playing Earth and Beyond, EVE, WOW, DDO, EQ1/EQ2 etc and so on. I love DAOC more now that I did when I started playing 5 years ago.
I have good and bad opinions about EA. First the bad...Their customer service is none exsistant. They rely on the fan base for their customer support. I have tried hundreds of times to search for problems related to installing BF1942 and such and I have to say what I found was crappy forums loaded with people talking about the game and no number or customer support forum that was easily accessable to determine what my problem was. I shelved BF1942 and haven't played it much since.
Second bad thing about EA... BF2....cheating was rampant in the game. They had a system where you could unlock weapons and people were cheating and racking up ranking many, many different ways. Too many to list. It took them months to patch for it. By then every cheater had their unlocks and people like me who really enjoyed the game. Still was just a SGT with 1 or 2 unlocks whatever it was. Anyway...the third thing is the access system for BF2. It took forever to get in to a game and you never knew what your were gonna get. What type a server or anything. Poor interfacing...extremely....poor. I can go on but those were some of my huge pet peeves about EA.
Now for the good...they are a big company and have had successful games. Hmmm what does this mean? Sounds like a whole other topic. A lot of people don't like EA. I have to agree I like Mythic a WHOLE LOT BETTER.
I mean night and day better. Perhaps the AWESOME customer service of Mythic will rub off on EA. I would think EA might name themselves Mythic EA... not EA Mythic. Mythic is the only company I know of and I have played all the mmos on the market of note, that has continued to improve their game by leaps and bounds with each successive release of an expansion. Some people love the changes and Mythic has even kept servers for the people that didn't want any changes. I would recommend checking out BF2142 from EA coming out soon. Looks awesome. I will buy that just like I have all the BF stuff out so far. I hope EA will learn from their new merge with Mythic for the betterment of us all.
About Earth and Beyond I played the beta and the first months of the game and I was very disheartened at the lack of progression. Kinda boring for my tastes. I never saw them getting it right. I saw some changes and threw out the cd in the trash the day I left it. DAOC on the other hand I have been back and forth to it 4 times and am back again after the new Darkness Rising and Catacombs expanions and loving it.
I would hope you will try the newer games coming out like BF2142....looks to be a smash hit.
I would hope you will also try Warhammer Online. It isn't EA It is Mythic making the game. They just have a new company that is part of them. I for one am going to try them both and can't wait for the beta.
But...
less then 3 months ago "Mythic isn't selling out to any company as long as I'm at the helm" (None other than Mythic's CEO"
And a few months back I recall them stating that they can't push out expansions for DAOC as fast as they'd like because they're using up most of their resources getting WAR ready for launch. And now, less than 2 weeks after the buyout is announced we hear:
Mythic's development team will be working with Ultima Online on their new project (whatever that is).
Yah, nothing is changing my rear end. EA is already starting to give Mythic projects on top of the ones they're already working.
I hope WAR comes out ok and I hope it doesn't detract from DAOC in any way. But with EA running things? My confidence in WAR being any good is much lower.... because I know EA's track record.

If Mark would have said that he never would sell the company, then he would have never taken any meatings. The fact is he did then and in the past with multiple companies.
As for DAOC not being able to put out as many expansions as they would like because of lack of resources, I would like to see where you got that from. Mythic consists of 3 teams. DAOC, expansion, and WAR. Most of WAR's personal comes from those who were hired to work on Imperator as well as some new people they hired. The expansion team for DAOC has been working for a few months on the next expansion. In another week or two then you will see an announcement about it.
For how UO and DAOC have working I do not know. It might cause a strain in resources, or it might not. It all depends on the project and if EA is going to provide additional staff for Mythic. In this issue I have concerns, but I will wait and see what happens over the next few weeks.
I can't say I am worried about WAR. GW will not allow it to go out without meeting their standards. I do not think EA will want to risk loosing the license. So, at this point in development, EA has nothing to do but sit and wait and hope that it will be a success.

True but if they really want to make sure Mythic isn't distracted then they shouldn't be sticking UO on their plate in any form until WAR is out, stable and well supported. Anything other than that is directly meddling in the potential that WAR has.
Instead we're already getting announcements that Mythic and UO are teaming up on some project or other (with more details coming 'soon'). I love Mythic... and I like the potential for a revitalization of the UO2 project or something similar... but at the same time I'm concerned with the fact that EA is tapping Mythic with additional duties while WAR is still under development.

Well,
If this is going to anything like EA taking over Ultima Online then i have very bad news for everybody. Ultima Online was a fantasy world which made every player feel unique. It was mysterious, there was no Help File and if you wanted to know something you had to ask another player, so there was a real, in-world knowledgebase.
EA came with it's Hollywood style approach and effectively changed it into just another kids game. It was as if they threw everything that made ultima great into the trash and commercialised it. I hope for our sake this game stays a game built for fun, and not for fortune.

You do realize that not everyone at Mythic is on the WAR team right? Just because Mythic is doing something else, doesn't mean it is taking anything at all away from the WAR Dev Team. Mythic has always had completely seperate teams for each project... The Camelot and WAR Teams are seperate, on seperate floors of the building even.

You're back
So now maybe El will beleive me that there are seperate teams to prevent resources being spread thin. Of course that still leaves open the UO thing and how and what is going to help them, but we won't know that for a few weeks. At least EA has to money to give you to hire more people. Or at least that is how I read Mark's comments on one of the ways EA is going to help WAR out.
And employees never move between teams?

And employees never move between teams?
Yes, naturally, same as any other company. People want to experience something new, try something different or take an oppurtunity to move up the ladder, etc. But in those cases their spot on their old team is filled with someone new, etc. Basically the overall size of a team is dictated by that team's needs, not another team's needs.

That completely answered my question, thank you.
However now that Mythic is owned by EA I am compelled to no longer be a fan of them.

Yea I was done with EA when Origin Inc sold out to EA...
Almost to the point I don't even want to deal with Tabula Rasa or anything Richard Garriot has his hands in as well for selling his company out to EA.
Anything EA touches other than sports games goes to crap.
Mythic is supposed to retain almost complete autonomy from EA. As DAOC is still a money maker, it's possible Mythic can stave off any major pressure from EA in the immediate future. If Warhammer is the success it's expected to be, Mythic won't have to worry about pressure from EA for a long time. After all, it is all about the chedda! If Mythic isn't eating up resources, EA will stay quiet.
As for UO, you can bet Mythic isn't working on it without the promise of a piece of the pie. And, I venture to suggest that with Mythic designing and programming any future UO, it will be a solid piece of work, whether it becomes as popular as the original or not, but, that pie could be huge! I can't see Mythic taking on stuff that would dilute their ability to deliver a quality product.
Of course, if Mythic could only fix The Sims Online, they'd all be multi-billionaires within weeks. I still can't fathom why the Sims sells so well!

I understand that... but um... who are they going to put on the "UO" team?
^^^ That's my whole point. Everyone keeps saying that EA is going to let Mythic be autonomous and "do their own thing". But suddenly we're already seeing signs of meddling. Who at Mythic is going to be "coordingating with the EA UO team on a "UO Project"? Not that I'm against a UO Project, especially if a modern UO that adheres to the concepts of UO comes out of it. But I am concerned that everyone keeps SAYING that EA is going to leave Mythic alone but before WAR is even in beta Mythic is being tagged with a mysterious "UO Project".
Are they hiring new staff or are staff being pulled from WAR and DAOC to do this 'project'? Like I said... as a die hard UO Fan, I love UO more than any other MMO, I am THRILLED that a group of Mythic's caliber will be doing something with UO.... But as a fan of DAOC and being fond of the idea of WAR.... err... I'm concerned.
Hmm I wonder if the UO Team person who posted that little tidbit on the official site is still employed by EA or not....
And, like Fad said: You are part of EA now... I love DAOC... really I do... but as a part of the EA corporate monster I can't really be a 'fan' of "prject team: Mythic" as much as I could be of "Mythic Entertainment, the independant company".
EA and I have far too much history for me to just 'overlook' the fact that Mythic is now completely owned by them.
*sighs* I wish I was a millionaire... I'd start my own gaming company and design our own MMORPG... god knows I used to be pretty damn good at concepts for MUDS (3 of the ones I helped design are still alive to this day).

As for the UO thing, from what I took out of that comment, they just meant that they looked forward to mythic's expertise, which would suggest to me, they may have just been looking to get a few pointers on an advisory level, not shifting development of UO projects over to mythic. just my thoughts on the matters

Regarding EA and their studios... Someone mentioned BF2 as a bad example of how EA handles thing. However BF2 was developed by DICE (Digital Illusions) and they had been acquired just before the release of BF2, DICE pretty much ran everything and EA didn't step in because they trusted DICE. Bad call, maybe, but DICE has a pretty succesful trackrecord so who can blame them. From what I hear DICE is still pretty much the same even after being bought by EA. That being said, it seems that EA actually has the sense to leave succesful developers alone (to some extent anyway), and Mythic is _very_ succesful and has alot of experience. The only things I think will change is A) EA handles publishing, marketing, PR, etc. EA has huge testing and quality assurance departments which mythic can use. C) EA can provide experienced project managers if needed. Then again there are horror stories where EA has messed up succesful studios bigtime.
All in all, it could be good, it could be bad, it could remain the same. I'm hoping for good since WAR looks like it could blow everything else out of the water.
I dont remember how long I played DAOC, but I always had fun. Its the first game I owned a house in it, loved the /level ability when you got one character to max level. I m not sure if I would go back , I left after the player mounts were put in.
EA put a bad taste in my mouth for video games, I remember working for hours to get someone to some help my brother's bug character in Earth and Beyond , then giving up with this one email. It took them around a week to solve the issue. And EA CSR kept telling us , "there is no problem we can see" , reminded me of Star Wars "these are not the droids youre looking for".
If there is one game I enjoyed the most though it would be DAOC , I always had a good time logging in, until the end of account. But with EA's dark shadow over them, I m just not sure if I could trust them for support and stuff.
