3rd--ianubisi, sorry but if you have even been to the newbie island for more than 5 minutes, you would see that it is a fact that the community of SoR is light-years ahead of the leetspeak children of WoW (and I say children as a mental state as well as age). For example, if we were on Atys right now, I would have just respectfully suggested that the game is perhaps not for you, because that is how we handle things there-maturely. However, here it is different. If you think WoW has a better community or is in any way better than SoR, you are the crackhead here, my friend. I've been playing ryzom for the past week. I have to say, this is probably the most misleading gave I have ever played. On the starting island of Silan, everything was great, there was a bunch of stuff to do. I started to get a little bored after doing the quests and gaining top equip so I decided to go to mainland, where all the real fun was supposed to start!
Wrong. The town that I started in after purchasing my 14.95 subscription was completely deserted except for me. The quests were pointless. This was a huge jump from the starting island. SoR is a complete grind-fest in a disguise. It will drag you in with the starting island, which is a horrible representation of the full game. There is absolutely nothing to do in mainland except grind your brains out with no community interaction. Now if grinding is your thing, then you will LOVE saga of ryzom. It has some beautiful landscaping, monsters, and a great character development system.
All I can say is a day after my subscription I got it refunded.
Want a quick and fun experience? Play on the island of Silan for a week in the free trial. Otherwise STEER CLEAR of this game. I would not recommend it to anybody.

Well you know it is easy to try "hundreds of MMORPGs" when you only play them one minute each.

Yup... and that is why I like it. I like games with those qualities. I am having a blast. That is all that matters to me.

I do agree and have stated before that I think newbie island can be a bit misleading because of how it is set up. However, it is a tutorial, and you really have to keep that in mind. I have not even been to the mainland yet, but just by asking a few questions in regional chat that were answered readily by the vet players trying out the "NPE", I was able to determine that the main game is less quest oriented than the newbie game. They are trying to teach you how to do basic things. I am not sure how they could have done that without the sorts of quests they have in the newbie island ("Go collect these 5 things and craft this item for me" -- which teaches you quartering and crafting, for instance).
Indeed if you stay on Silan after you are done with the quests, as I have done for over a week now, you get more of a sense of what the game is like. I happen to enjoy it, and I don't think it is a pure grind... to me a pure grind is doing things only for the purpose of levelling or skilling up. I do things for other purposes (example: gather resources to make items for sale -- to me that is not just grind).
But you are, at least in part, correct... I just don't see how they could do a newbie tutorial without having done it the way they did. I didn't play the newbie stuff before the Silan patch (I started Ryzom the day that came out), but as I understand it the old newbie experience was more like the mainland and people ended up too confsued and unable to understand how to play the game because it's so complex.

You haven't been to the mainland yet? Here's what its gonna be like for you if you do decide to: Your gonna gather your materials which you like doing, make armor sell it to a shop, wait for somebody whom you'll never meet to buy, then you'll repeat. Over and over. When I say there is nothing to do in mainland, there isnt. There is no pvp, if you join a guild you can maybe hunt with a few friends. You'll rarely see another player in towns. Its as if everything you do is for the pure sake of reaching a higher level. Whenever I did something in mainland, I would think to myself "What am I doing this for? This isn't fun. I'm gonna be doing this forever." There is no endgame, no way to use all those skills that you work hard to earn. I strongly suggest you dont get a subscription, but thats just me. Good luck in whatever you do though.
If Nevrax wanted a better game they should: Have a smaller world to accomodate the small amount of players. Have completely open PVP and some type of rewards system for killing people. Have PVP battles between the races. Basically, PVP is what makes a good game, believe it or not. This just doesnt have any. This game doesnt have anything besides nice graphics and good character development.
bangbrother, these are valid concerns, even raised by the long-time ryzom players. The new newbie-island IS a bit misleading; the island is nicely populated, but once the four races are split to their homelands it takes away a huge part of the crowd - and NOTHING is worse for an mmorpg than to feel deserted (one of the reason most ppl checked out the old newbie island and quitted the first night ).
my tip: stay on the island as long as you want - it's free. once ring is released there should be enough content for most ppl so justify a subscription (nevrax needs AGES to release content, tbh).

I'm sorry but thats an utterly uninformed post. I'm too old and tired to get into a petty flame war, but really.. look at my sig, and many others who post here. I've been playing a looong time, I've been utterly enthrawled for most of that time. every time i log on i get maybe 5% of the things done i want to do.
as is often said in the universe channel, on these forums, on the main forums, on Klients, everywhere is that the mainland is not mission based, its a sandbox, a world for you to live in. you will not be told what to do, you can do anything you like. i have been playing nearly two years, i haven't ever 'ground' anything. i have made many friends, i have lead a successful guild, i have explored deep, dark places that most don't venture, i've formed alliances, helped win and defend an outpost, led treks, organised events, done a million other things and have a million more to do.
you teleported to a town and found no one there and based your opinion on that. tell me this, why would i be in that town? say hi in region, go exploring, do something apart from expecing it all to be there for you on a plate.
What gets me about Ryzom is this notion of doing anything. What is that supposed to mean anyway? Can I gather raw materials and build a car to drive around the planet? Can I kill an NPC and rob his store? Can I build my own village and settle it with NPC's? Can I PvP other people around me? No is the answer to all above.
My point is that you can't really do anything you want. You can do the things that are availble to you in the game. That is fighting, crafting and socialinzing. Thats it.
1) You can hunt for level advancment with no endgame thus no real point.
2) you can craft or gather mats to use for crafting. You can then sell those crafts or use them and do that ad nauseum for months or years on end simply for fun in making better items for yourself and others. Some people can find the fun in this just for its own sake. I'm not on of those people.
4) you can run around the world and look at stuff. The game does have beautiful graphics but come on. Its a video game its not like you are exploring a real world. Its not like the sand in one part of the world will look different than another. You aren't going to discover the cure for cancer or some long lost civiliization. A palm tree is a palm tree no matter where you are. There are herbivores and there are carnivores and they are just higher levels spread around the globe. When I'm playing a game I don't just look at a hillside for 20 minuntes and ponder about how spectacular it looks. The game is beautiful but I can't imagine logging into a game and syaing to myself "I think I'll take a run around the contienents tonight and just look at stuff.". Ryzom takes a unique kind of person to truly enjoy this aspect of the game.
5) you can chat. Chat can be dressed up in many different ways to make it appear you are doing something but in the end its just chat. I don't need to pay a subscription fee to do that. I'll just download an IRC client and chat for free. I like social aspects of MMOG's as much as the next guy but I like the social aspects in context of acheiving some kind of goal. That just ins't there with Ryzom.
Ryzome is not a competitive game. Its not competitve from a PvE perspective nor a PvP perspective. Its probably the single best chat client you could ever own.
I'm sorry to bash this game. I tried it and played it for a month. I too was taken in by newbie island. The graphics are great and the skill advancment, stanzas, and crafting are neat too. But then I hit the mainland. You can either fight, craft, or chat or chat while you fight and craft. Forever.
They really have something special to build on with this game, but it is SCREAMING for an end game. If the developers gave those of us that thrive on competition something to do other than just creating our own arbitrary here today gone tomorrow end game that was concoted in chat than I and others would be back. Live events are a poor mans content.
Good luck those of you that decide to stick with it. It takes a unique player to "get it".
The more support they have the better they'll get. And SoR has the fundamentals down pat (skill system, immersive world, awesome lores). If someone is ambitious, they can probably take the NeL engine and make a small and awesome game with it.
BB, you need to read up a bit more on what SoR do have to offer in term of "end game". There're some, just not fully realized.
The main end-goals were to be RAID Events/Outposts/Rite Missions (but in some opinions all 3 fell short of expectations).
Eventually they do plan to release new skills/lands/mobs. They just don't have the resource to make it happen (or happen at a fast rate).
Let's hope they don't mess this up (or take forever to release it).

Have taken many people sight seeing, our whole guild would turn out to trek with a member who had found something cool to look at

So, in other words, you mainly don't like the game because you can't gank everybody. And don't bother getting huffy with a retort. Reread what you've said if you disagree with this assessment. There are more people on the mainland now as they leave Silan. If you had bothered to ask or even to just read the universal chat once in awhile, you would have seen that most of the veterans are already in the high level zones or are on the island rolling alts so they can see the Silan Ruins. The mainland has more people evryday due to the trial. That's what the trial is for, to bring new people into a great game. If you don't like consesnsual pvp, you should have focused on earning faction with one group or another. Then you could have all the pvp you wanted by walking into another faction's area. Oh, well. Ganker mentality is not wanted in Ryzom anyway, so just find another clone game out there and play it.
And pvp is not a requirement for a good game. Pvp in most cases I've seen is the best way to ruin a game, unless the game was centered on pvp such as Guild Wars, or had consensual pvp. Believe it or not, MOST people don't like pvp!
Thanks PB&J, I for one am happy to read a well reasoned anti SoR post for a change.
At the moment I'm totally delighted with SoR and fully intend subscribing when I'm ready to move off newbie island ( funds arn't what they used to be or I'd sub now )
I think this all boils down to what kind of gamer you are.
Ask me my all time fave MMOG and without a milisecond of hesitation I will say DAoC, but my three years in DAoC were not dedicated to RvR and farming ToA. My best memories are of spending a day buffing/rezzing noobs. Or just chating whilst trinketing bars. But what made DAoC for me was the fact that I could go PvP when it suited me, and not because it suited some testosterone driven tit who could press a button to turn invisible.
I suspect that the lack of DAoC style PvP will cause SoR to fall well short of DAoC in the end.
Until then SoR is far and away the most entertainingly complex MMORPG available at the moment and that complexity plus the inteligent community shows up the mainstream games for what they are - mediocre moron fodder.
This is my opinion at the moment and may change totally within a month or so .... but if WoW, EQ2 and EVE continue to be the main alternatives then I doubt it.

No, it is not for everyone. No, I don't think everyone should play it - just anyone who is looking for a game with the above qualities should give it a try.
And the devs don't lie! They are honest! Really SoR is an extremely nice game, I don't understand why someone would settle for a game like...let's say Vanguard, instead of SoR. SoR goes 1 step further. It is really hard and challenging. Not to mention that by lying, a game like Vanguard would attracts peoples it should never have attract or kept, which will deteriorate the community and the game experience of everyone. Nevrax are good devs. Not my devs saddly, but good devs!
SoR is not for me, but I only have good memories of it and praises for them. The devs don't try to catch a bird like me, they welcome me, they open their game and are very nice, but they let's you go free rather than lie. Which is already a LOT better than what Vanguard devs ever did.
It is the MOST HARDCORE game I experience, I walk away nicely and happy for my game experience! (was it 2 weeks? A month), it is many time more hardcore than old EQ was ever.

If Nevrax wanted a better game they should:
Have a smaller world to accomodate the small amount of players.

I've been playing a looong time, I've been utterly enthrawled for most of that time. every time i log on i get maybe 5% of the things done i want to do.
as is often said in the universe channel, on these forums, on the main forums, on Klients, everywhere is that the mainland is not mission based, its a sandbox, a world for you to live in. you will not be told what to do, you can do anything you like. i have been playing nearly two years, i haven't ever 'ground' anything. i have made many friends, i have lead a successful guild, i have explored deep, dark places that most don't venture, i've formed alliances, helped win and defend an outpost, led treks, organised events, done a million other things and have a million more to do.
you teleported to a town and found no one there and based your opinion on that. tell me this, why would i be in that town? say hi in region, go exploring, do something apart from expecing it all to be there for you on a plate.
rather long rant over o.o
New Kitin Lair for "raiding"

If Ryzom had a compelling end game (for me), I'd be back in a second. Good luck with it.
Is it another "click then go and make yourself a cup of coffee while your character slowly attacks the mob continually" game or is it realtime?
And what, exactly, is wrong with that? ^_^
niche:
a place, employment, status, or activity for which a person or thing is best fitted
So you just admitted that SoR is the best at what it does. Which is, being a deep and complex MMORPG, with a significant focus on freedom and story, and an excellent crafting system.
