I think that RB really just needs to be completely honest with the playerbase. If they feel for a second that the game is not ready for release, then don't release it. Sure it may cost some more funds to keep it in beta and improve some things, especially the graphics but releasing the game before being realisticly finished is a very VERY bad idea. It's been the downfall of alot of MMO's out there.

I would much rather have this game hold off from release even months down the road until it's ready then for it to come out now and be a disaster. Ok disaster was the wrong terminology to use, but you know what I mean. I know these guys at RB work their butts off.

Alot of people say that graphics aren't everything and they don't make a game great. Ok that is fine and it's certainly their opinions, but in TODAY'S genre's and in TODAY'S MARKET for games whether it be MMO's or just single player games. Graphics are a BIG reason what get's players interested FIRST.

Ask yourself this question:

How many times do you look at a new MMO's website and almost always the VERY FIRST thing you click on is "SCREENSHOTS". Hell I do it...every ...time. People want to see what the graphics look like FIRST and FOREMOST before anything else. You may not think this is true, but it is. When a new MMO is advertised people usually click on the SCREENSHOTS link first to see what the graphics look like.

Hell alot of players won't even go into the gameplay features of a game if the graphics in the screenshots are rough and not appealing.

Folks it's a fact. If the graphics are bad, the game will most likely die out quickly.

I've said this in another post and I'll say it again. First Impressions of a new MMO coming into the market is EVERYTHING. Some of us really want this to suceed because this is variation and alot of us like the variation so we aren't playing the same ol MMO's time and time again.

Please don't put bad seeds into players, word spreads around the market VERY FAST about MMO games.

Thanks for listening.

Joe

They are doomed they already released a totally flawed product i really dont see this game going anywhere but to bankrupt

They know they released 10% of all they promised

I guess they just wanted to cash in some quick money from the clients...

Btw i think 50$ for a download is a freaking steal compared to a normal game that costs 50$ and comes with dvds, manuals, a cute box, etc

Face it the graphics are not gonna get much better.Few tweaks but thats it and you know what even if they hold off for another year they still will not match anywhere near today's graphics .

Its a small development company with very limited funding .So the key is to forget talking about the graphics and just say"when we get more funding from sales we will put it into an overhaul graphics".

Sure it will not attract the 100k+ sales but after stating that you can now focus on telling people about the gameplay and features and try and sell it.

Where will it get its clients? From sites such as this .If they get good positives a small crowd will buy it .Now 100k people but 10-50k who knows.Even 10k sales will still generate well over 200k $ for them that if put back into graphics will do an amazing job.

So right now i think they need to be more concerned about making the game playable and ABOVE all fun.

Once they get more funding they can do the graphics up and then maybe even advetize the game.

So... I could be misunderstanding your intent in posting the question... but If i read you correctly... I don't think you can discredit someones opinion of the graphics in the game based on the fact that they aren't a subscriber. They can still form an opinion based on the screenshots and videos that are released, as well as the word of the players in-game. Nice first post, by the way.... what with the drive by character attacks.. I might have waited until I had a few posts under my belt before I started trolling, but I guess you're more of a "go getter" than me ;)

Has the NDA been lifted yet? Just curious. The game is actually released technically now, right?

Ya it's my first post and you have to start somewhere  A problem with the internet is that a lot of communication irl is done through non-verbal means and by tone of voice. It was a straight forward question that I believe is relevant to the discussion, no need to read into it more than that.

I don't find the graphics great by any means, they are not bad enough to put me off entirely from the game though judging solely from the screenshots and some ingame videos. Graphics in games that I have actually played and have experience with are Daoc, WW2 online, Eve and Saga of Ryzom so these are my point of reference so to speak and influence my opinion.

The impression I get from some posters is that the game is automatically bad from the screenshots and ingame videos though which I don't think is justified. I also find some posters here lately have been unnecessarily rude (not all), which kinda ties in with my comment of "have you actually played the game" since it reflects your "investment" into the game and your credibility to the bad graphics AND bad game argument. You can express a negative opinion without being inflammatory and or rude, even if this is the internet.

Edit: Put in my original post for clarity

Yep the game is live for pre orders and NO longer in beta.

Pre orders got a 2 week head start as reward but all and all this is the release version and ofc nda is lifted.

Just making sure before I type this.

Yes I have played the beta. I logged in for the first time back in September of 2005 when I was first invited to the Roma Victor Commercial Test. KFR sent me the email. When I logged in, the server was practically dead. Maybe 15 people were online, one of which was nice enough to show me around a little bit.

The first thing I was disturbed by was of course the graphics. Sure it was early in the beta test so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular but nonetheless the graphics were just herendous.

I have a 6mb down / 768kb up cable internet connection and while there was only 15 people ONLINE at the time I had a ping of 400ms so I lagged the entire time I played.

Keep in mind my PC specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice core CPU
    ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard nForce4 chipset
2 gigs of PQI high performance memory
Gigabyte Geforce 6800GT video card (now i have a 7800GT by the way)
2 - 80GB Western Digital Raptor Hard Drives Raided 0
    Onboard sound
Rosewill 550W PSU 35a on the 12v rail
    Thermaltake Soprano Case
Thermalright XP-90C pure copper heatsink w/ heatpipe cooling system
4 high powered Panaflo case fans

My system never reaches above 34deg celsius under hours of full 100% cpu load.

I logged out, checked my internet speed on speakeasy and dslreports sites and was getting an average of about 6350 down and about 805kb up. To give the game the benefit of the doubt I rebooted my PC then re-tested my internet connection and got the same high speed results. I logged back into the game and had 500ms ping and now there were 18 people in the game. This immediately turned me off as just moving around was laggy and so choppy. I brushed it off and tried to go do something.

Tried chopping trees, lagged horribly, tried making some of those bundles of branches and start building something but the gameplay to me was just horribly designed that it was impossible to figure out how to do anything. Eventually I got the jist of it but it was so micro manageable that it became a grind just to build a spear head for my spear, etc.

This along with the poor graphics (which I understood back then), the horrible and I mean HORRIBLE choppy gameplay and internet connectivity to their server made me uninstall the game immediately in disgust.

About 2 months ago from today I reinstalled the game to see how things were going and to see if they were any better. How was it you ask? It was basically the SAME THING. I couldn't believe it. The graphics were maybe a "little" better, the internet was better but not great (about 100-150ms with some times going down to 80ms) but the server was still completely dead. I logged on 4 times in 1 week and the most I saw online at once was 10 people.

TEN PEOPLE. This ALONE is another turnoff. What kind of community is that?

Now some of you will say that I didn't play enough, but I have to have interest in the game from the get go to even want to continue to test it. I can't test a game when the gameplay and latency is so choppy that it makes it so frustrating just to do anything.

I understand RB is a small company and hard working, I understand that this is something that hasn't been done before. I understand all that. I respect the company for trying, but it still needs major work done. IT SHOULD NOT BE RELEASED YET. I don't want to see it fail, I want to see it improve in certain areas before it gets released.

There are just too many other games out there that do it better for this game to have any kind of success.

It's a fact in my opinion.

    Thanks.
    Joe

For me the problem is that they have said all along that the graphics aren't as important as the gameplay... unfortunately, based on the early reports, gameplay is possibly worse than the graphics. I personally always believe saying they were sacrificing graphics for gameplay was a bit of a cop out.... since There really is no reason you can't have both. Unfortunately, there are free games, and other games made on little to no budget that have much better graphics than RV. It is a VIDEO game, the only reason to try and pretend graphics didn't matter is if you knew yours were bad :)

The game is not dead by any means.  Maybe a bit more time before release can make the gameplay issues much improved.  A game like WWII online had probably the worst launch of any mmorpg and it is still around and quite a bit improved(from what I hear).

graphics aren't everything. Play a Tale in the Desert and you realize that, or WoW.
