'Ello all,
I'm sort of looking at getting into a nice fantasy MMORPG, but I'm having abit of trouble finding something to match my tastes, be it released or in development. What I'm looking for is a somewhat gritty and not-so-cheezy environment, ie more "Lord of the Rings" than "Xena Warrior Princess". Preferably the game should be skill-based rather then focusing on levels, but this is not as important. Should have a good mix of PvP and PvNPCs in some form. Another important aspect is the ability to play an Elf, and not the pansy squishy magic-wielding Elves we see too much of, but rather a Tolkien-esque balrog-whomping warrior-elf adept with swords, axes, and bows.
I've taken a peek at WoW, nice scenery, but falls on the cheezy scantily-dressed sword-wielding women with big boobs. The design and class-system of Lineage II looks more to more to my liking, but in addition to the problem with scantily covered boobs also seems to suffer from problems with silly overdimensioned weapons. Middle-earth Online could work out, but seems a far way off. Gave Ruibies of Eventide a whirl, and the environment was good, as was races and skills, but this one suffers from a bit of implementation problems. Etcetera.
So, wise ones, any suggestions along the lines above?

I am not sure if this game meets all your requirements, but DAOC is a pretty good game. The elves are adept in various skills. This game a good PVE and PVP aspects to it. It is a level tread mill but the carrots at certain level bench marks make the game fun. i played for about 18 months before I moved on. check out the info on it, you may like it.
Hope that helps
