Looking To Fill The Void?

mcmfiremcmfire Member Posts: 9
I started playing SWG back around Pub 6, and like a lot of vets am completely fed up with all of $OE's crap, which is why I finally sold off everything, deleted my toons and quit. I wouldn't even come back now if they offered pre CU for free.

Over the last year or so I've been trying out other MMO's looking to find one that was characteristic of Pre CU, the complex crafting, open skill system, and the freedom to choose your own path. Needless to say most of the mainstream MMO's don't alow that minus of course EVE. I beta tested a little known game awhile back and while it had a lot of potential I left nonetheless.

I recently returned to the game "Saga Of Ryzom" to be pleasantly surprised about all the changes and increased population, I gave it an honest try and before I hit my third day of gamepley I was hooked. This game has everything that made Pre CU great, player based economy, complex crafting with realistic decay, risk vs. reward in all facets of the game, and an open ended skill based system ofering more flexibility than even Pre CU. Over the last week I've found a lot of old SWG vets playing as well, many have banded together to form guilds, while the older playerbase has welcomed us with open arms.

The community in this game is absolutely incredible, I've never seen people so willing to help out or offer advice. They monitor their own chat channels, and try to mold the new players into a self sufficient respectable community. There is a lot of player interaction, and CSR support is the best I've ever seen. There are GM's logged on at all times to offer assistance, and the game itself works as intended, I really have yet to see any game breaking bugs.

The attention to detail is also first rate, I play with every setting cranked and haven't experienced any of the lag that seems to plague SWG, even in the most populated areas.  I can't say enough for this game, and with the new unlimited free trial it definately give players an oppritunity to really dive into all aspects of the game.

I have heard of SoR before, but after reading your post, i decided to look into it further. After dealing with the hateful, angry hordes posting on the $OE boards, the SoR forums are quite refreshing. I see there is a newer SWG refugee thread....maybe inline with the free trial?

I am downloading the 7 day free trial on my gamer as I type this and will give it a whirl and so far, it sounds promising - the aspects I cherished in the older incarnations of SWG seem to be there - .complex game, challenging, excellent crafting, 'room' to really develop a toon, etc.

Hope this is my answer to SWG.

The free trial is actually unlimited now, you start off on the starter island and have unlimited time to explore, work your skills and complete all the quests. Once you decide to continue, you begin your subscription and then move to your races capital city. The game used to have a 7 day trial, but I think most thought because of the learning curve that 7 days wasn't enough.

Almost daily I'm seeing more and more SWG Refugees, which is kinda nice being that we can really appreciate a complex game and a nice community.

I started SWG on the second day it was live since like nearly everyone else getting on the "first" day wasn't possible.  I played up until the CU plopped to the ground and started stinking up the place.  I tried the NGE when it first came out in hopes that it would correct the mess of the CU, of course it only took a few hours to know that I could have had more fun flushing my money down the comode then playing that.

I'm on my second week playing "Saga Of Ryzom" and so far I'm having a good time.  It has a developed starter islond to help you learn how to play and you will be happy to have that chance because the learning curve isn't for the "wow working brain".

It is a complex and interesting game with a mostly mature community which thankfully is not frequented by tons of "1337 boyz".

Between "Eve Online" and "Saga Of Ryzom" I'm happy and content to leave SOE and its problems behind.

Others can fight for Restuss, non existing future upgrades and whatever else the devs think up while drinking their bong water.

I'm going to spend my money on "completed" games.

SoR was alright.. Didn't really like it, though. Not sure what was wrong with it.. I guess the blanket term's "unpolished".

The really sad thing is, with all of the changes, neither is SWG.

it was! really! more than now imho. since NGE its more like "Star Wars if George Lucas had made Jedis as common as people that poop (basically everyone)" there were few jedis and they pwned. the BHs chased the jedis. there were many people, and the atmosphere was very star warsy...ICONIC EVEN (<<--just to piss everyone off)

So instead it was as if George coined the idea of robocop along with Star Wars.

While I agree that SoR is an excellent game, I feel the need to warn people that the game does not fill the SW void any better than any other game out there.  The skill based system is rubust, the custom skill editing is incredible, but the grind is utterly massive if you choose to do just 1 or 2 melee, healing, and a foraging and crafting skilline.  The community is extremely helpful and nice, but I disagree with the economy, it is convenient, but in the end nearly everyone crafts so getting good gear is never a problem especially if you are in a guild.  Lastly, the endgame is fun, but IMO it is not much different than any other consentual PvP in mmos.

I had a ton of fun playing SoR for months because it is a solid game with a good community and gameplay.  In the end I found it did not fill 'something' and I had to move on.  The next expansion sounds very interesting though and I may return to check it out.

    Question about Saga of Rhyzom.

I gave it a try because I heard alot of aspects were similar to pre cu.. I had one problem tho.

I could not figure out how to remap the game to mouse movement instead of WASD. I could not find any options to do so..

I hate WASD movement therefore I gave up on the game.

Does anyone know if it can be remapped and I just missed something?

I have found 2 decent replacements for $WG.

    1. Planetside

    2. Shadowbane

Both are not broken and completely FREE!
