Small areas like WoW, and only when necessary. Less than 20% of the game is instanced. And considering on launch there are 26 square kilometers of non-instantced space, that's a lot of free roaming
Is that a normal size for a game world? If that world was square, thats 4x4 miles.... Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to remember most MMOs I played having a bigger world than that. I know i have read that a majority of the game world is not instanced.... 26 square kilometers just doesn't sound like a huge world to me. I bet all the cities added together in Guild Wars would be about that same size.... and i think any single planet in SWG was larger than that.
At any rate, I think the confusion about this game being mainly instanced comes from this listed feature...
Dynamic Zone™ technology and hundreds of scripted adventures providing the best of single-player game mechanics - all unfolding in private, uncontested world-areas for individuals and groups to experience
I believe there is something like 26 non-instanced zones and 6 instanced zones. There is no more instancing than WoW. It will definitely not be primarily an instanced game.

How much is 26 square kilometers in comparison to other games ?
What can you compare that to so people will have an idea of just how long or short that chariot or horseride is going to be if one decides to "roam"?
Is this 26 kilos pure land walkable/rideable mass or does this include water trees and other areas you cannot get through?
I don't really know how it compares to other games... but to put it in real world perspective, assuming it is square for simplicity's sake, it would be roughly 4 miles across. The accepted average walking speed for humans is about 3 miles per hour. Or one mile every 20 minutes. A 4 mile walk at that speed would take you about an hour and 20 minutes.
dont forget the massive ammounts of game world will be uncovered in expansion packs though!
At the moment it is focused on Italy but as we get further into the game more areas will open up...
Africa Greece Britain Spain
so it is a lot of land!
and your saying in SWG you have explored all 1024 square miles? When it gets to that big of a number it becomes completaly pointless because i have played SWG for 3 yeas and i havent even discovered half of that land!
"One of the coolest things I really love about the Gods & Heroes team is the fact that every thing has had a ton of attention and detail poured into it. Remember how I was telling you that we have over 26 non-instanced areas that were over 1 square kilometer in size?
Did you know that each one of those areas is hand crafted, modeled, and managed by a team of artists, content engineers, and designers? Yeah, we're hardcore. " - Deodatus

That this game is fully instanced is just a rumor.
